Also, Natalie Cole comes to mind who did a cover of one of the songs of her dad (Nat King Cole) Uli ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 16:59:55 +0000 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Eileen Rose's different covers Can anyone out there explain why Eileen Rose's "Shine Like it Does" comes in two different covers from Rough Trade? I seem to have the one with the causeway on it, but I've noticed others have her on it. Keller" Subject: n.atlas/foretold... Here's what I know about Natacha Atlas' =Foretold in the Language of Dream=, prior to actually having a copy in hand. It was released in Europe in August, but there's been no U.S. release as far as I can tell, nor is any New York record store carrying it as an import, hence the mailorder. One can preview it by visiting the Mantra Records website (www.mantrarecordings.com); on the Natacha Atlas page they have an entire 6-minute track for listening to. And on the French Amazon site (amazon.fr) they have 30-second samples of all the tracks. This is why I'm confident I'm going to like it. It's not a "regular" Natacha Atlas album; it's credited to "Natacha Atlas/Marc Eagleton Project," and she has described it in an online interview as "New Age." Anyone who has heard her albums will remember passages (sometimes at the beginning, sometimes partway through a song) where the dance beats are in abeyance and she improvises complicated vocal cadenzas over a drone. =Foretold...= appears to consist in its entirety of passages like that. Sounds good to me. More when the album arrives. P.S. According to news on the Mantra site, Natacha Atlas has been in the studio since at least last fall working on a new (presumably "regular") album to be released in 2003. (Sure would be swell if she toured over here after that...) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 21:37:24 -0500 (EST) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: ky/01/11/03 Proverb: if you're fortunate enough to attend a Kristeen Young show, don't turn your back on the stage: "Touch Tongues" might be sneaking up behind you. Kristeen's first (New York!) show of 2003 began with the high-energy "Breasticles" and "Automatic Love," which seemed to really rev up the substantial crowd's enthusiasm. Then Kristeen (dressed in short red suede boots, striped pants, artfully cut-up red shirt, and a black beret that kept falling off) moved to the center-stage microphone for the best full-band version of "21st Century Ride" yet; Kristeen was playing air piano as the song ended. She also did the dark rocker "Bite Down," the dramatic "We Want More!?" and the brooding ballad "Heart Land Soul"; the latter, her newest, is settling in nicely, and the sound was good enough this time that I could really hear the sequence of cluster chords in the bridge. I looked behind me for a moment at that point, and if the two-chord opening of "Touch Tongues" had been a corporeal being (like the guitarist that time who careened off the stage and narrowly missed me), I would have been knocked flat on my face. What a rush. I turned back around and paid it proper attention. "Touch Tongues" is frequently the best song in her set, and o boy was it this time. The ovation from the assembled multitude made it clear I wasn't the only one who thought so. There was a palpable wave of disappointment when Kristeen indicated that the set was over (her second short set in a row, unfortunately). She said afterwards that when she gets back from doing a show in Portugal(!) she'll play New York again on March 1st at the Continental. Confirming details to follow. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 22:16:11 -0600 (CST) From: "Mitchell A. Rufus and Sloan Wainwright are the kids of Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle. Ben and Sally Taylor are the kids of James Taylor and Carly Simon. I assume you all know Julian Lennon :-).
