"IMPORTANT - If you are a member of the Settlement Group, you can only file one claim per person no matter how many Music Products you purchased." $5-$20 is supposed to make up for the oh, 600-700 CDs I've bought in the past 8 years? I *might* be able to buy another disc with the money received -- but hell, getting $5 in the mail isn't going to be what makes me go drop another bundle at CDBaby... jeff (no, really, I'm not bitter!) n.p. _The Boy with the Arab Strap_, Belle & Sebastian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 16:16:08 -0800 (PST) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: "Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff" - Bob Dylan I don't think Bob's talking about bathtub gin here, either! - -Neb =========== Salon.com: "Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff" Bob Dylan's debt to the hidden industry that he (unwittingly) helped create. By Steven Hart Jan. 7, 2003 | Bob Dylan must be the first musician in history whose unreleased songs are as well known, and in many cases better, than his officially issued work. Certainly no other artist has been so bedeviled by underground recordings. The 40 or so albums that make up the official Dylan canon are all but lost in a sea of bootlegs so vast that collectors have organized them into subcategories, any one of which contains enough entries for months, even years of study. read on here- http://www.salon.com/ent/music/feature/2003/01/07/dylan_boots/ ===== Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I bought 45 new albums in 2002, which must be some kind of personal record. Here are my top 12. (and others I thought deserved mention) 1) Susan McKeown & the Chanting House - Prophecy I love this album, even more than Bones. Something about the recording has always made me feel like I'm right there, in a way more intimate than even the best live shows or albums. Everything on here is good, much of it outstanding, but "River" has to be one of my favorite and most-played songs of the year. 2) Peter Gabriel - Up My first Peter Gabriel album. I liked this on first listen, then found it artistically beautiful, and then on subsequent listens it became something I enjoyed as well as admired. I just find it so compelling, and I hear more in it with each listen. Yet, I can't really describe it. I think of the way he melds electronica and some world influences (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan vocals on one track for example), and even just the Blind Boys of Alabama singing "Oh" on "Blue Sky" is so beautiful. Those are some of the things I love about this album. I'm glad he was nominated for best male vocal (or male rock vocal or something) even though he'll lose to Bruce Springsteen. 3) Anne Heaton - Black Notebook One of the best discoveries of the year. To me, Anne Heaton is a really fresh talent, with a great voice and songs to go with it. 4) Frou Frou - Details I just thoroughly enjoyed this. 5) Ivy - Guestroom This all-covers release showcases their best blend of pop and ectronica. 6) Nerissa & Katryna Nields - Love and China This album has become such a well-loved and oft-played part of my collection, I forgot it was only released this year. Thanks, Meth, for reminding me that this was truly one of the bright spots of the year. 7) Thea Gilmore - Rules for Jokers Still not sure how to describe this (somewhere between Sheryl Crow and PJ Harvey? no, that's not really it either) but I do love it. Edgy lyrics and not-quite-as-edgy guitar and vocals. 8) Angilique Kidjo - Black Ivory Soul The second in a planned trio of albums focusing on African musical influence in the diaspora takes Angilique to Brazil. There's a range of styles here, great grooves, mostly on the mellower side, but a lot of energy too. It's really much better than my description. Possibly her best work yet. The best concert I saw this year was seeing her perform most of this album, and some older songs, in Battery Park City, including a version of "Tumba" even faster than the one on the album. She kept urging the crowd to take to their feet, and by the end of the performance, almost everyone had. 9) Veda Hille - Silver Not meant to be a real album, this disc nonetheless always felt complete to me. Maybe not in the way Veda's albums feel complete, but more like a collection of snapshots, perfect in their very imperfection. (Not that I'd change anything about this disc) 10) Robin Holcomb - The Big Time One of my favorite discoveries of the year. Robin distills diverse American song styles - traditional Americana, blues, jazz, folk, classical - and distills them into something uniquely her own. A truly beautiful album, right down to the artwork. The songs are complex, but not difficult to listen to. Thanks, Neile, for mentioning this and sparking my curiosity. 11) Rachael Sage - Illusion's Carnival I love this so much. A few quibbles, but another great album by Rachael, who keeps getting stronger and riskier as a singer and songwriter. 12) Terami Hirsch - To the Bone An excellent and very mature sophomore release. Terami has this way of bringing me right inside her songs. It's her lyrics, her piano playing, and I think, that way she curls her voice. It was also great to get Stickfigures and hear other versions of some songs and others that didn't make the album and Terami's comments. MORE ***** ALBUMS Patty Griffin - 1000 Kises Except for the title track, "Mil Besos," this album is lovely throughout. The song "Rain" alone is worth the price of the disc. Alanis Morrissette - Under Rug Swept Pure pop fun. Holly McNarland - Home Is Where My Feet Are The most complete album she's released yet Rebecca St. James - Worship God Rebecca continues to release music that is as good as its message. This is energetic and inspiring. **** ALBUMS The four stars. These grade about a B+/A- Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk It took me a while to start warming up to this, but it grows on me with each listen. Now the songs are starting to play bits of themselves in my head, always a good sign. Julia Fordham - Concrete Love This album really grew on me. I can melt in Julia's voice. Some of the songs aren't even that good, but the album is pure butter. Katell Keineg - What's the Only Thing Worse Than the End of Time? Great to have a new one by her. Nichole Nordeman - Woven & Spun Another of my favorite discoveries this year. The album felt slow on first listen, but has steadily grown on me. I love her voice, her piano, her melodies, and I really relate to where she's been. Includes a great cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." *** ALBUMS The three stars. These grade about a B Ani DiFranco - So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter This is only 3 stars because I still don't like the Reveling/Reckoning material on here, but the old songs sound really fresh and "Self Eviden" is so powerful. I haven't been listening to Ani a whole lot lately, but putting on this album immediately reminds me why I'm such a fan. Emm Gryner - Asianblue Her last two releases were in my top 10 of their years, but this one doesn't match those for me. Once I got over that though, I found a bright album with great production. If only all pop music were this good. Veda Hille - Auditorium It's good to finally have a live Veda album, and there's much on here I like (and a few songs I've never managed to get into like the reworked "Precious Heart" and the horns on "Song for Snake", but it was overshadowed by Silver. Indigo Girls - Become You I really like this album when I pull it out. Unfortunately, I rarely remember to. Aimee Mann - Lost in Space I absolutely lovethe songs "Humpty Dumpty" and "Pavlov's Bell" and the tracks on the bonus disk. The rest of the album kind of depends on my mood. Sometimes I like it quite a bit; other times I'm really bored. Shannon McNally - Jukebox Sparrows I got this because it was on sale and Amazon.com kept recommending it to me, but it would have been a good buy at full price. A very solid debut. She gets a lot of Sheryl Crow comparisons, but to me she sounds like Joan Osborne on Relish, which is not a bad thing. Not at all. Beth Orton - Daybreaker Okay, it doesn't have any stand-out demand-to-be-played songs like her previous albums, and the last 3 songs are duds, but there's a lot on here that's really good. Alice Peacock - Alice Peacock She got some buzz on ecto earlier this year, just after I bought this based on a Tower Records clip. Nothing quite lives up to the promise of the first song, "Alabama Boy," but it's still a good album. Shivaree - Rough Dreams "John 2 1/4" is a great song, and so are some of the others on here, but overall it's uneven. Still, it's good to have them back. BEST SONG ON AN ALBUM NOT MENTIONED "Mongoose" from Victoria Williams' album Sings some Ol' Songs. Haven't heard the original, but this is so much fun. BEST "THANKS TO ECTO" DISCOVERIES Edie Carey - I really got into The Falling Places and need to order her other stuff. Hannah Fury - I picked up all 3 of her releases this year. My favorite is Soul Poison. Hem - I've crowed enough about them already. Sorry for the length, but I didn't do one last year. : ) JoAnn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jan 2003 21:51:17 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD article An interesting article (at least it was interesting to me) about DVD-A and SACD can be found at: http://slate.msn.com/id/2076336/ Michael np: CD Baby's August 2002 Magazine mp3 compilation [Moodroom, anyone?] nr: The Devil and Deep Space by Susan R.
