As my colleague Mark says, the issue isn't necessarily cheaper cds flooding the US, but rather US economic pressure on other countries to change their laws (he thinks Aussie will be the first to fall due to their hope for an open trade deal, though I don't know if they've a 50 year law). Sad if this puts pressure on the quality re-issue outfits, as the article suggests. Excerpt: Copyright protection lasts only 50 years in European Union countries, compared with 95 years in the United States, even if the recordings were originally made and released in America. So recordings made in the early- to mid-1950's - by figures like Maria Callas, Elvis Presley and Ella Fitzgerald - are entering the public domain in Europe, opening the way for any European recording company to release albums that had been owned exclusively by particular labels. I didn't catch Waz, but did get there in time for Laura. She was on the Extasy Records label which was part of the company that I used to work for that went under last fall. She had a nice poppy single off of her album that wasn't too bad, but the rest of it didn't do much for me...it sounded like bad Joan Jett and other assorted stuff. But her show tonight had me interested. Stripped down because of the small stage, she and her band performed some fine pop with a semi punk-rock edge. Emm's set was too short. She pulled out "Straight to Hell" from the Clash as tribute to Joe Strummer. Also dug back to Original Leap Year for "Fetching Decay." Nice set as always. Fisher was wonderful. Kathy, Rob(?) Wasserman, and the guitarist had an hilarious banter on stage. And they performed beautifully. I think I must pick up their albums now. Another part of this protectionist era is the Universal remotes do not have an input select as an option. Do not lose the remote that came with your VCR. I have an old Bell&Howell, I believe it is old enough not to have the built in anti-DVD circuit. I have no B&H remote. The few U remotes with an "input" button are only able to reproduce the on front panel operations. I called B&H and they sent me to Sears. The man on the phone told me that he was sending "the" remote I needed. For $20 + $8 s&h he sent me a remote available locally for $15 that accessed the menu but has no "input" button. I told them it needed an input and they sent this anyway. Not just VCRs but honesty is being phased out too. Even eBay had nothing usable. They really should play house concertsat the Hellmouth. After all, you're safe from vampires there unless the hosts intentionally invite them in. Actually, the "Loss Prevention" folk at the store where I work refer to the front door, with its beeping snarfage detector, as the Hellmouth. I told them that they're there as an aid to society: they buffer the vampire layer. - -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #5 ************************
