News to me from this article/interview: I knew she had a house in Cornwall, but I didn't know where. It's right by Bude. Big deal to me why? Well, a good friend of ours owns a cottage in Bude and lets us stay there for free when he's not using it. We have a spare key. It's a weekend/holiday escape/retreat for us -- winter, summer, whenever. I love it there... http://www.observer.co.uk/review/story/0,6903,868605,00.html Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. The group, not the food. Wacky, quirky, oh yeah, all right, oh no. Best Obsession, Part 2 (electric boogaloo)-Eddi Reader. Best Reason to Like New Zealand-Bic Runga and her fabulous album Beautiful Collision Best Reasons to Like L.A.-The Arclight movie theater and Largo music club Best Reason to Hate L.A.-Susan Werner only gets out here once a year. Best other 4,030,228,566,940,239 Reasons to Hate L.A.-Everything Else Best Reason to Fear Wookies-Frou Frou Concert at the Knitting Factory in L.A. Standing where I was standing. Behind a dancing one. Best Action Star- Christian Bale. He double-fisted his gun-slinging way into my heart with his performances in Reign of Fire and Equilibrium. Two sci-fi-ish movies that had way too much fun aspiring to be the best darn B-movies that they could possibly be. And at the heart of both was a sweaty Bale. Best Reason to Like New Zealand 2-LOTR movies Best DVD purchases-Sports Night set, Farscape Season 1 (www.deepdiscountdvd.com), LOTR-FOTR extended version, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Band of Brothers Worst DVD Purchase-My So-Called Life set, but not because it's a bad set. I got shafted by preordering it from Another Universe before it became publicly available. Best Reasons to Watch TV-Anything written/directed by Joss Whedon. Dalton Ross. The Daily Show. Best Actress-Daveigh Chase (voice of Lilo, voice of Chihiro from Spirited Away). My sister remarked that her favorite scene from Lilo and Stitch was when "(Lilo) punched the white girl in the face." My sister is 28. With a Masters Degree. Best Reasons to be Happy in 2002-My brother got engaged in July, my sister got engaged in December. Biggest Reason to Fear 2003-I'm the Best Man at my brother's wedding in July, and I am petrified at having to give the speech. Jeebus save me! I'm so glad that Jack mentioned this new release. I had thought that she didn't record anymore and would never have looked for it otherwise. I'm so interested to hear the Japanese influence. Most of the influence I've heard from her are very Jamaican or Cajun influenced. She is yet another (and probably the first) of the red-headed freckled slide guitar-playing blues-wailing women that will knock your socks off. While hers is a different sound, one can't help but think of Bonnie Raitt and Patti Griffin. At times Ellen's voice has the smooth throatiness of Roberta Flack, but the delivery is much more in the vein of Janis or Bonnie. There is a little bit of the Bobbie Gentry crackle in there, too. Thanks again for the heads-up, Jack. I can't wait to hear it. Lisa n.p. Anne Peacock n.r. With such a wide variation of music tastes on these lists, it can be quite an adventure at times. My purchases this year have been meager compared to some years, but a few are noteworthy. I currently have a three way tie for favorite album. Aimee Mann..."Lost in Space" I've been a huge fan since the second 'Til Tuesday album and have been following her career ever since. I think this album is better than "Bachelor #2" even though, in some ways, it sounds like a continuation of it. There is a feeling of melancholy on this album in both the music and lyrics, even the booklet graphics are lonely and sad. Grey Eye Glances..."A Little Voodoo" A very pleasant surprise, GEG have hit their stride with this album. A lot of catchy tunes on the new album that stick in my head for days. Vienna Teng..."Waking Hour" I finally got around to getting this album a couple weeks ago after reading all the positve reviews and listening to the samples a half dozen times over the past year. I must have the new version as it has a 2002 date on the back, so it's included here. A lovely voice, strong songwriting, and not one filler track on the album. Highly recommended. And the rest in no particular order (well, maybe a little). Tangerine Trousers... "Far Above Rubies" A local southeast Michigan band that call their sound "folkrockcoustic". Their celtic, folk, blues and country influences can be distinctly heard on this entertaining album. The album contains 12 original songs (one hidden track) and 3 covers, including a very nicely done cover of Sinead Lohan's "No Mermaid". Hear samples at CDBaby or download mp3s at their website tangerinetrousers.com. [this commercial announcement brought to you by no one but me, I've never met the band :^) ] Beth Nielson Chapman..."Deeper Still" The long awaited new album from BNC grabbed me with the first song "World of Hurt" and didn't let go. I went to see her in Ann Arbor in May. She has a stage presence that makes you feel that she's just playing to a room full of friends, rather than doing a paid concert. Tanya Donelly...Beauty Sleep" I was terribly addicted to "Lovesongs for Underdogs" when it came out. This album doesn't come close. It does have some good songs, but is a little disappointing after such a long wait. Mae Moore..."It's a Funny World" Nice album, for the first half, then it develops a strange warble. Upon closer examination, I discover that the hole in the CD is off-center. Do I still have the receipt? Damn, can't find find it. Well the first half is pretty good. Beth Orton..."Daybreaker" I put this on and start to get into it, then about halfway through I lose interest and put on something else. Sheryl Crow..."Cmon Cmon" Straightforward rock and roll. Nothing profound or earthshaking. Good driving music for a sunny summer morning. Eleanor McEvoy...Yola I liked her first two albums and was disappointed with the third ("Snapshots"). This album returns to the softer sound of the first album. The last songs on this album have a loud hissing noise in the background that's very annoying. [More bad quality control at the production level. Here's my chance to rant about the abysmal state of the recording industry, but I won't. We know it's all because of mp3 piracy anyway.] Heather Nova...South This was really released in '01 in Europe and I bought it from amazon.co.uk back then, but it was released in the U.S. in '02. Last year I gave it a thumbs down, but after a year of listening I'll raise it to 4 out of 10 stars. I do like Heather, just not this record, give me "Glowstars" or "Oyster". Looking forward to: Will this be the year Happy releases her new album? ( X fingers crossed X) A new album from Velvet Belly?? I still play "Lucia" a lot after 5(?) years. And, from the Heather Nova newsletter: >hi everyone, > >i just wanted to wish you a happy holiday season and to thank you for >helping to make this a good year. i really enjoyed all the concerts and >appreciated your appreciation; it's a good exchange, isn't it?! > >i have been spending the last few months doing lots of writing and i plan >to have a new album out by late spring. this will be a really stripped >down record along the lines of the acoustic gigs i have been doing. > >thank you to all of you who have written me emails and sent messages of >support. i love to hear your stories and i am sorry if i couldn't answer >you all personally. i send you lots of warm wishes for a peaceful and >happy new year. > >see you soon > >love, >heather An acoustic album?!!? YESSS, I love her acoustic stuff best of all. Cheers, Chuck ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #4 ************************
