Now, I'm so used to the idea that anything bought in Australia will be overpriced compared to the US, I automatically hit Amazon.com first - they had the complete first season, for cool U$122... ouch! But then, just for the heck of it, I went to our local online retailer chaosmusic.com, and imagine my suprise - they have that same set for A$144. In other words, 70-something U$! How's that for a bargain? I suppose shipping would be more expensive for overseas orders. But still, assuming you've got a multi-zone DVD player because they'll be coded for zone 4, it looks like a pretty good deal, doesn't it? Anyhow, I ordered mine. I see it as a late Christmas present for myself :) Sorry for a complete lack of Ecto content in this message. As I mentioned before, I haven't been buying much new music of late... I am, however, in the process of converting my entire collection to Ogg Vorbis files. I just reached half-way point - today I finished the first of my two CD racks. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one." -- A.J Liebling, media critic - -- 22:05:43 up 3 days, 2:29, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00-- ------------------------------ Date: 03 Jan 2003 14:11:32 +0100 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: Re: farscape bargain [andrew fries]: > > Now, I'm so used to the idea that anything bought in Australia > will be overpriced compared to the US, soooo wrong when it comes to DVDs! > I automatically hit Amazon.com first - they had the complete first > season, for cool U$122... ouch! It's time to defy meth! This was, without a doubt, my most listened to album of the year, and I think it's clearly Sarah's best work. Absolutely brilliant. _Lost In Space_, Aimee Mann Like most folks, it seems, Aimee Mann's latest didn't grab me right away the way _Whatever_ or _Bachelor No. 2_ did (_I'm With Stupid remains my least favorite of her solo albums, though I listen to it from time to time and enjoy it). But, like most folks, repeated plays illuminated depths that made me fall in love with the disc. _The Last One Standing_, Christine Fellows "Veda's Waltz" alone was worth the price of admission. Perhaps not quite as quirky as _Two Little Birds_, and with a surprising guitar-driven rock sound on several songs, this was still a worthy follow-up and not the least bit subject to __ (aka ()), Sigur Ros Okay. The album has no title (though the band was kind enough to use typographic symbols on the cover to make it slightly easier to type). The songs have no titles. _Up_ / _The Long Walk Home_, Peter Gabriel including these as a single entry isn't cheating, is it? Gabriel's best work in years (well, okay, some of his only work in years...) is also his most interesting and unusual since the days of _Passion_. _Scarlet's Walk_, Tori Amos Finally, a new Tori album was staying power. I haven't really cared for anything since _Boys for Pele_, and I didn't like that one nearly as much as _Under the Pink_. The last bunch of albums I would listen to for a few weeks and then would relegate them back to the CD rack where they'd languish a year or two between plays; I can't recall the last time I listened to either disc of _To Venus and Back_. But _Scarlet's Walk_ has taken up a steady residence in my CD player and doesn't show any signs of relinquishing it's position in there. _Silver_, Veda Hille Veda released two discs this year, the live _Auditorium_ and the limited edition _Silver_. From the first play of each disc, it was clear that _Silver_ was the one I liked best. Certainly I'm pleased to have _Auditorium_ in my collection, and it will continue to get played. But it's _Silver_ that catches my attention, with it's quirky collage, its joyful, boisterous cover of "Road to Nowhere," _Once More, With Feeling_, Joss Whedon and the Buffy cast Actually, this was a bit of a disappointment -- but that's only because I had listened to the MP3s I downloaded from some german web site the day after the episode initially aired. As Greg footah'd, it's weird to listen to the musical without hearing the snippets of dialog that were on the CD I originally burned myself. Still, the music and lyrics are top notch, and it was a huge relief that Joss was able to get the cast recording out into the public's hands. _Live in New York_, Laurie Anderson I didn't listen to this album very much. And yet, and yet. It seems so incredibly important to me that Laurie did the shows which comprise this recording (and meth, as an audience member, certainly seems to agree) -- and important that she released the album. It documents a moment in time that desperately needs such documentation. A document which presents a human response, not a sensationalized journalistic response. Not visual, but aural. And the performance is just outstanding. This simply had to be included, even if I'm more likely to pull out _Life on a String_ or _Big Science_ to actually listen to. _Sea Change_, Beck I'd never bought a Beck album before, and really picked this one up on a lark; I hadn't yet heard anything from it, but I'd read enough interviews to make me very curious. And dark, depressing breakup albums often appeal to me. With its lush orchestrations and mopey, angsty vocals and lyrics, _Sea Change_ didn't disappoint. Runner up: _Advisory Committee_, Mirah If the album were a little more consistent, it probably would have made the list. "Cold, Cold Water" is one of my very favorite tracks of the year, but overall I'm not sure I like this album quite as much as its precursor, _You Think It's Like This, But Really It's Like This_. Still, Mirah got a fair amount of plays with me this year. Artist I Really Should Have Paid Attention to When She was Mentioned on Ecto: Oh Susanna Early this year, I picked up _Sleepy Little Sailor_ on a lark, which was followed almost immediately by _Johnstown_ once I figured out how much I adore Oh Susanna. One of these days I'll manage to find a copy of her first EP. I really should have known to do this sooner, based on the fact that "Williamsburg Bridge", which features Suzie Ungerleider, is one of my favorite songs on Veda's _You Do Not Live in This World Alone_. Book: _His Dark Materials_, Phillip Pullman Many thanks to all the ectophiles who have mentioned this trilogy. I picked up the first book while out of town on a business trip, and couldn't put it down, so I ordered the other two when I returned home. jeff n.p. (erm, between cds; _Night Bugs_ just finished, and I suspect Marillion's _Fugazi_ will be next, but I'm undecided) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 10:26:02 -0800 From: The Todd Bramy Subject: best of 2002 Without boring you with a list, I think the album of the year is the Two Loons For Tea 'Looking For Landmarks'. Kills me every time. - -Todd ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Jan 2003 15:00:40 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: My best of 2002 list [long] Once again this year, the relatively low number of CDs I picked up was surprising (at least to me). Still, I seem to have done pretty well as far as finding some worthwhile listens, so I'll go with what I've got. Best albums of 2002 (in no particular order): Susan McKeown - _Prophecy_ It's great to be able to finally have this long anticipated album, and to be able to own a CD with at least some of the songs that I've been enjoying live for years (plus a couple of excellent new songs). I highly recommend this album for those who have had the pleasure of seeing Susan live, those who have been hoping for something new on the Chanting House side of things since they picked up a copy of _Bones_, and those who still haven't heard Susan yet. As I understand things, the CD is currently only available via the web (at http://house-of-music.com/susan/prophecy.shtml ), though it will hopefully end up with wider distribution sometime this year. Sleater-Kinney - _One Beat_ An excellent new album from what is currently (IMO) the best rock band there is. I really, really like this new effort, and think it's a more solid piece of work than their last release (_All Hands On The Bad One_). Of special note are their take on 9/11 ("Far Away") and their shot at a political protest song ("Combat Rock"). Christine Fellows - _The Last One Standing_ More accessible than her first album, but still quite quirky in its own way. To me, the more straightforward approach seems to make Christine's excellent lyrics and piano playing stand out more, and I have to say that I like this album even more than I liked _Two Little Birds_. Joss Whedon & cast - _Once More, With Feeling_ As others have mentioned, it just seems weird to hear the songs without the bits of dialogue, but it's still great that Joss was able to get this CD out to the many fans of this excellent musical episode. The Reputation - s/t Elizabeth Elmore returns to recording with this great debut album from her new band. E really rocks on this one, and if you liked Sarge I highly recommend giving The Reputation a try. Honorable Mentions Rachael Sage - Illusion's Carnival Easily her best work yet, in my opinion, but it doesn't seem to have ended up spending as much time in my CD player as I thought it would after the first listen. Mirah - _Advisory Committee_ As Jeff Burka said, it lacks consistency, but when it's good, it's really, really good. Tori Amos - _Scarlet's Walk_ I've made some comments here on ecto about not being particularly thrilled with this album (and certainly not as thrilled as some of her other fans are), but I still like it. I think the problem for me is one that someone (I think it was Karen) mentioned a while ago, and that's that the album is just too long. I'm really into it through the first 8 songs or so, then it all starts to sort of blur, and my mind just drifts. If it was half the length I'd probably like it at least twice as much. Edie - _Shades_ Sort of on the fence about this one, as I'm not sure if it belongs with the best albums of the year, or just in the honorable mention category. I've been listening to it an awful lot since I bought it from CDBaby back in October though, and it's definitely a find. Many thanks to Neile for recommending it! Two Loons For Tea - _Looking For Landmarks_ This is the first Two Loons For Tea album I've gotten, and though I really liked it for the first few listens, it has since lost some of it's luster. Stuff that probably would have made the best of list if I'd actually gotten around to buying it: I tend to be pretty pathetic about getting around to ordering albums that I need to send off a check for (as opposed to just buying them online), so I still don't own any of these three albums. Hopefully I'll rectify that soon. Veda Hille - _Silver_/_Auditorium_ Kristeen Young - _Breasticle_ Stuff that would have been on my 2001 list if I'd bought it back then: Rachel Smith - _The Clearing_ Wow. This album just blew me away on the first listen, and has spent a lot of time in my CD player since then. All of the good things you've read about it here on ecto are true, so head over to CDBaby and buy yourself a copy. Vienna Teng - _Waking Hour_ After seeing this on quite a few "best of 2001" lists, my friend Jennifer decided to order herself a copy and get me one too. It's absolutely great, so if you're at all interested in wonderful songs, a great voice and excellent piano playing, get yourself a copy. Disappointment of the year: The obvious choice here would be the dreaded _Night Bugs_, which everyone seems to either love or hate. I actually didn't buy a copy though, as hearing Sarah's EP that came out the previous year warned me off. If Sarah finds her new style of singing to be more artistically satisfying, then I'm happy for her, but it's just not my cup of tea. Best Concerts (in chronological order): I tried to cut this list down to just 5, but obviously I failed. *wry smile* Over the Rhine @ The Iron Horse, Northampton, MA, March 2 Probably the best OtR performance I've seen so far, though the fact that I was at the table up against the stage and right in front of Karen definitely didn't hurt. They were in especially good form though. Richard Shindell @ The Towne Crier, Pawling, NY, April 28 A great show where Richard was backed by a double bass player and a guitarist (who was *not* the horrible Billy Masters), and the opener was James Keelaghan, whose "Cold Missouri Waters" Richard covered with Cry Cry Cry. It was probably one of the best Richard Shindell shows I've every seen. Sleater-Kinney @ Village Underground, NYC, May 13 Even though _One Beat_ hadn't come out yet, and I therefore didn't know most of the songs they played, it was still a great set. I guess that's a testament to just how talented they are. Cowboy Junkies @ The Iron Horse, Northampton, MA, May 22 This concert seems linked to the Over The Rhine one in my mind, probably because I sat in the same spot (only this time in front of Margo, of course), and because of the many links between the two bands. In any case, it was the best Cowboy Junkies show I'd seen yet. Susan McKeown @ Grassy Hill, Lyme, CT, June 23 I hadn't seen Susan and the Chanting House perform at all earlier in the year (though I did get to hear Susan sing while attending a couple of performances of Peter & Wendy), and this excellent show was a great way to be reminded of how wonderful her live shows are. The Reputation @ Rudy's, New Haven, CT, August 1 Elizabeth Elmore rocks! Vienna Teng @ Jeff's house, Wakefield, MA, September 28 When Jeff heard that Vienna was looking for another show in the Boston area that weekend, he offered his living room as a venue. The result was a great combination of his first house concert and my first chance to see the amazing Vienna Teng in a relaxed and intimate setting. I'm definitely hoping that she makes it out to the east coast again this year! Worst Concert of the Year: Erase Errata @ The Knitting Factory, NYC, August 12 Much sitting around in the bar with woj and Don Keller avoiding the opening acts, and then much standing waiting for Erase Errata to start, followed by an okay set that was only 20 minutes long (and they were the headliners!), followed by more standing around as the crowd pretty much demanded more songs, and then a one or two song encore of covers. Sheesh. Anyway, that's my take on 2002. My thanks to ecto for introducing me to most of these performers. Michael np: Nothing, actually.... nr: The Devil and Deep Space by Susan R.
