We have two years to raise money and get on the air with a brand new community controlled FM Radio Station. The Fusion Cafe construction is moving forward and we have high hopes that we can officially open the event space this year. It is our intention to locate the FM Radio Studio in some of the 2nd floor space currently used as residence. Our New Beginnings Concert will be held on New Years Day from 1PM until 6PM at 1621 West Broad. The lineup of bands includes: Noble Chicken, Crucial Elements,Zero Hour, Clockwork Grace, and Stolen Roses. Paul Magill Smith reviewed 3 of these groups who were involved in a video and cd recording session at fusion this summer....Three of the groups combined (Zero Hour, 1 Clockwork Grace, and Stolen Roses) had only one musician older than nineteen. These weren't just unruly kids making what I call 'thrash & bang' noise---they can PLAY, and even have a concept of stage presence. I think I speak for the several dozen people involved in this adventure when I say we were all wowed, especially by the 11-year old girl bass player in Zero Hour. Her instrument is almost as long as she is tall, but playing with it slung almost at knee level she never missed a lick, despite hopping up & down in time with the beat. The combined ages of this three-piece group is 39, so I'm sure, whether they stay together or not, we will hear more from its members for quite some time. Then the 'old men' hit the stage. Clockwork Grace (mentioned before in MAWS---ages 17,, & 18) play a combination of twelve instruments between them. The guitar & bass players each have ten years of classical piano training, so they don't find 'three chord rock' very satisfying. Classic Rock with plenty of jazz oriented licks is their forte, but one of the songs filmed & recorded on Saturday, "Funk Bomb", had other style elements included. When they are finally old enough to play in alcohol serving venues, they should be exceptionally tight & polished, and many of you folks' should become very familiar with them in the near future. Not to be outdone and herself in a peer group of the previously mentioned two, Richmond's newest diva, Chelsea Kerwath (age 17) with Stolen Roses can always be counted on to give a delightful performance. Her vocals & guitar playing are beautifully augmented & complimented by the fine vocal harmonies & instrumental work by David (sax, flute, clarinet) & Tom (lead & rhythm guitar) Somerville. In contrast to the egotistical baggage that often accompanies youths with more desire than talent, these are very friendly down-to-earth young people with a great deal of ability, and it should take them to whatever heights they aspire. Crucial Elements are reported to me to be "the hottest local Reggae Band". Noble Chicken, while having a high sounding name, are reported to be some " down to earth corn fed punk rockers" Come join us as we celebrate the wonderful opportunities of this New Year. Tour the Internet Radio Studio, and see the progress in creating the Fusion Cafe.
