Hope everyone is gearing up for fun holidays, whatever your definition of holiday (or fun, for that matter). Last night I did my second stint hosting the global music show on KUNM. I had a blast and got a surprising number of phone calls too. Global Music isn't necessarily an ecto show, but I threw in a lot of things of interest here. I started off with a holiday set heavey on Jane Siberry and Susan McKeown, as well as Dzintars (beautiful Latvian women's choir) and stuff from Sari & Mari Kaasinen's Christmas album. (They are from Vartinna.) I had received a copy of Katherina Franck's album Zeitlupenkino a month ago and finally listened to it last week. It's amazing! It's one of the most exciting things I've heard this year, and a far far cry from the Rainbirds (who I like too). The title means Slow Motion Cinema and is completely apt. The closest comparison would probably be Laurie Anderson. All of the songs are compelling musical landscapes with mostly spoken word pieces over them. What's amazing to me is how well they work even without understanding the language. I find them compelling and mesmerizing. I played the 10 minute centerpiece of the album, New York City Marathon. Afterwards, I mentioned I didn't know what it was about and three people called to explain it to me (sort of a love letter to the city - full of excitement, but also loneliness, homesickness and frustration). Since it was so popular, I played another track later and got another two calls from people wanting to track it down. Needless to say, I highly recommend this. I also played something off the Tara Fuki album that I just got on ecto recommendations. I knew it would be something I'd love. Two Czech women who play cello and sing, virtually guaranteed to be good :) It's also wonderful, and a must have for anyone who likes Iva Bittova or Jorane. Oddly enough, they sing in Polish, a language "far more fit ofr singing because it has softer consonants and vowels then the Czech language." This one is available from Amazon. Thanks to the folks here who brought them up!
