An autodidact and = child prodigy, Nowottny captured the attention of playwright Lauri Bortz = in 1998 with a hand full of homemade cassette tapes and high-school = notebooks filled with prose. This material surfaced in 1999 as the CD = "Afraid of Me" on the Abaton Book Company imprint. This debut CD was = warmly received in publications such as The New York Times, New York = Press, Wire Magazine and Magnet. Since then Marianne has released other = recordings, including the 2001 double CD "Manmade Girl" which solidified = her position as "one of the most important artist's of her generation" = according to Joe S. Harrington, author of "Sonic Cool". She has = performed on the same bill as Elliott Sharp, Cul de Sac, Genesis P. = Orridge and Daevid Allen of Gong. With a unique appeal across the = musical spectrum, she counts as her fans Jim O'Rourke, Matmos and = Bernard Stollman of ESP-Disk Records.=20 A constantly evolving songwriter and performer, her compositions = exist in a state of flux, which allows her to articulate musical ideas = and phrasing in an improvisational manner. Her individualistic keyboard = work on radio shack keyboards, harmonium, and piano is unique with its = moments of surprising harmonic complexity. Her haunting and unsettling = vocals maneuver into bizarre uncharted areas producing deep, evocative = textures, and revealing complex internal narratives. Marianne Nowottny is now 20 years old and a sophomore at William = Paterson University in the United States where she is studying art and = politics. She continues to explore and develop her visionary mode of = songwriting and performance independent of anything else going on in = music right now. "Illusions of the Sun" is Camera Obscura's first multimedia CD, = containing seven audio tracks and a twelve minute three song video. The = audio portion of the CD contains five new, more developed recordings of = some of Marianne's favorite songs from the "Afraid of Me" and "Manmade = Girl" releases, as well as two new and previously unrecorded songs. The = video portion of the release contains an August 2000 performance of the = songs "Panopticon", "Sapphire" and "Barely Nearly" recorded at Signal = 66, a performance space in Washington D.C. The release also contains an = eight page lyric booklet and a self-portrait by the artist, which is = featured on its cover.=20 "Marianne Nowottny redefines the medium, with melodies that swoop = and dip like butterflies to underscore her enigmatic reflections." - = Bernard Stollman of ESP-DISK, New York City, 2002 For more information: Contact the label on camera-obscura@tpgi.com.au Abaton Book Company web site: = http://www.abatonbookcompany.us/nowottnyfanclub.htm =20 [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of illusionsofthesun.jpg] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Dec 2002 16:41:40 -0500 From: dances with virgos Subject: cunningham, crigler and hill on wfmu noticed this on www.wfmu.org. chris has played with katell keineg and susan mckeown while michelle still is a member of the chanting house and also has sat in with natalie merchant. tim hill would be erst-while ectophile nick hill's brother. >Cunningham, Crigler, and Hill >Monday, December 30th, 3pm - 6pm >on Irene Trudel's show > >This trio performed in its infancy on Irene's program two years ago and is >about to release its debut. Keller" Subject: mn etc. adam k.'s dismissive remark about Marianne Nowottny ("the aural equivalent of performance art") is actually not inaccurate; and he would have thought so even more if he had seen her (as I did) last night, on a long Xmas extravaganza bill with poetry readings, a surreal play, bellydancers, an amazing thereminist (theremin + delay unit = frippertronics), and folk singers OK and very good. Marianne herself was even more vocally wayward than usual, and playing with the rhythm of the songs, too: I wondered how people who didn't know the songs could get a sense of them. (Though a friend who came with me enjoyed it; I did, too.) She did one song she'd written earlier in the evening (a little tighter than the others), plus that amazing Umm Kulthum-influenced, harmonium-accompanied version of "Sweet and Low." (I wait through the set for it.) But the demonstration case for her style had to be the finale, a version of "Silent Night" (with her producer Mark Dagley on John Fahey-style slide acoustic guitar) where she warbled all over the place in her best near-Mary Margaret O'Hara style. Yep, that's how she sings. Earlier I'd been across the street at CBGBs to see Kristeen Young's last show of the year (I'm so grateful the set times were different), a short but good set featuring the best version yet of her newest song "Heart Land Soul" and the always-spectacular "Touch Tongues." She'll be back at CBGBs on January 11th, for anyone in the near area. Then I went home and watched my tape of a =very= intriguing new =Buffy= episode. A very full evening. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #352 **************************
