Subject: Merry Xmas, Happy New Year...whatever Well, in two days I do my seasonal retreat to the new forest, so I thought I'd air a few thoughts out, typically, stereotypically and unwarranted. To be frank, this wasn't a great musical year for me. With so many great artists doing so many sub-standard, predictable and/or formulaic albums (Tom Waits, Bob Mould, Melissa Ferrick, David Baerwald, Aimee Mann, Peter Hammill, Indigo Girls, Remy Zero, Tanya Donnelly, Flaming Lips), new (to me) artists failing to live up to the hype (Ryan Adams, Gemma Hayes, the Coral, Ellis Paul), relief came from strange quarters: Hail the magnificent Quick Look by Pina, the Dear Janes' quirky, broody "Skirt", Jacob Goolden's beautifully moody "Hallelujah World" (for once, comparisons with Buckley and Drake are justified), and Nektar's surprisingly fresh and vigorous (albeit not exactly"prog") "Prodigal Son". Honorary mention goes to Eliza Gilkysson's "Lost and Found" (not as good as "Hard Times in Babylon", but what could be?), Veda Hille's "Silver", Steve Earle's "Jerusalem" (starts off brilliantly, goes a bit Hee-Haw, finishes brilliantly), Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", which I thought I'd love more than I eventually did (anyone else ever have that?) and Patty Griffin's "1000 Kisses". The latter proved a bit contentious, as a lot of fans found it disappointing. I know I did, but getting to see her in (finally) live helped a lot and, although it pales beside the far superior unreleased "Silver Bell", any release by her is good news, so it makes the list. High praise, also, for Ani DiFranco's "So much Shouting, So Much Laughter" -- just when I was getting tired of her, she goes and releases one of the best live albums of all time, displaying fun, insight and commitment (and a refreshing political stance, in that she displays one when others -- apart from Mr. Earle -- have been notably silent). Best non-2002 albums bought this year: Carina Round's "first blood mystery" and the Neilds "If You Lived Here You'd Be Home by Now". Worst non-2002 albums bought this year: Ryan Adams' "Gold" and Marianne Nowottny's "manmade girl". For the latter - -- I know she has her fans, and I really gave it my best shot, but it's the aural equivalent of performance art. Still, it could be worse: with so many reality tv/prefab bands being cynically spewed out every other day, it's a wonder that any of this music gets produced or sold at all. This year seems particularly bad, and the battle for the Xmas number one single seems to be between a boyband and the two Pop Idols Rivals bands. Then again, the British have always been a bit funny about their Xmas no. 1's. My New year's resolution should be to listen to more radio and see if there's anything out there. Anything intelligent. Anything ecto. Films didn't treat me much better -- I started off big guns with "Mulholland Drive" (now one of my favourite films of all time) and then kind of tapered off into the wastelands of "Gosford Park", "Royal Tenenbaums", "Road to Perdition" and "Morvern Caller" (sweet jeez those last three were PAINFUL). Still, "Minority Report" and "Lantana" made it all worthwhile. Oddly, I found solace in books, reading at least five top-notch ones (okay, three of them are Philip Pullman's "Dark Materials" trilogy.) Good surprise from Ian McEwan, an author I've never seen what the fuss is all about, with his "Atonement" which is an utterly compelling read. Also, Carter Beats the Devil by....okay, I've lent it to someone, so I can't remember the author's name. This, however, is the first book that I've read in years that I could really call "Unputdownable". Even if I can't spell it. For me, however, this was the year of the Show. The year I produced my own show, the year I finally made it all happen. And it was the worst experience of my life-time. Lesson #1 learned: Hire a director you can trust. #2: Never pay anybody---It'll never be enough, anyway. So, in the new year I go back to the office job. Well, at least I'll be able to afford music, then. And maybe see a few more films. adam k. np: eileen rose/shine like it does nr: jeff noon/falling out of cars ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 07:35:46 -0500 From: "Gabriel Laverdiere" Subject: Re: Jorane on Bravo This show will also be aired on ArTV in January. Love Is Blind http://www.clairevoyant.com Torch-core meets post-gothic electronica in this addictive collection of songs, Claire Voyants third longplayer. Echoes of Garbage and Curve emerge from the slick, bright production. Despite the songs minor key melodies and luminous atmospherics, they are never less than hook-laden, insinuating themselves in the listeners subconscious like the best pop songs. Ben Fargens guitar is more textural than traditional lead guitar parts; he still gets to strut his stuff more so than on previous offerings. The guitar swaggers in Close To Me, and soars plaintively in 24 Years. The recording is most dominated by Chris Ross synths and programming. He has absorbed the lexicon of electronic music, and creates ethereal sounds that refer to, if not ape, those of Bjork and Aphex Twin. The rhythm section is consistently danceable and varied, at the same time. Pieces wouldnt sound out of place in a club, while Mirror is funeral and sinister. Victoria Lloyds vocals are meltingly smooth. Rather than a folk or classical-based style (common among goth/ethereal singers), Lloyd uses langorous jazz phrasing; hints of Vaughan and Wilson can be heard, along side Sioux and Fraser. Lloyds vivid lyrics portray her as an idealist, disgusted by loves betrayal, yet unwilling to give up the quest for perfect love. Its a darkly romantic pose, redolent of old Hollywood glamour. She occasionally strays into darker territory: the narrator of Mirror is filled with self-loathing and co-dependency (I need you like my faith in the divine); what she sees in the mirror isnt so pretty. Warm similarly (unhealthily) boasts of a heart thats manic or diseased but always true. In this way,Love Is Blind becomes the photo-negative of a make-out album. Romance has its silver lining, betrayal follows seduction. At least Claire Voyant makes such depressing realities irresistible ear-candy. - --Craig ===== Reviews of esoteric, atmospheric literature, music and movies: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ethereality/ Yahoo! They sent me an email apologising for delay, but I still haven't received the tickets. The show is in a month! And finally, yes, I now am an American firmly and permanently ensconced in the New Forest! I sold my flat back in the US.
