Dobbyn is one of those locally popular artists that small countries like NZ or cities with too much civic pride in their arts must suffer :) He is bland and has been around for ages and when someone is that entrenched in the music biz, it takes more than their inoffensiveness to oust them. He's above critical assessment. Dobbyn's song 'Loyal' is the theme tune of NZ's America's Cup campaign; the advertisement involves famous New Zealanders standing on the shoreline in an unbroken line as the camera swoops across the nation. Their hands are over their hearts, and we snorted 'Leni Riefenstahl' and changed the channel. Of course real kiwis should 'loyally' be making financial donations towards a rich man's big floating toy race. Humbug! Anyway, I don't know anyone who'll be attending Dobbyn's concerts, but maybe ectophil is reading the list at the moment. I'm still listening to Scarlet's Walk non-stop - didn't expect it to be so lasting. Was talking to another toriphile about the length, which is my main problem with it, and led some friends to feel it was full of indistinguishable 'samey' songs until they'd heard it many many times. I can't decide which songs could be cut (to me 'strange' & 'crazy' are too similar and close together on the album, as are 'vegas' and 'sangria', though the latter belong together for geographic reasons, and other people love 'your cloud' so maybe it doesn't suck, hey I just don't like it) .. anyway, my problem is that I can't listen closely for that long, I wander off mentally or have to head out of the room to complete a task. It's too big in my head too - I can't hold it together or see it all at once, which is odd for a themed album. I still can't remember the tracklisting. Methinks Tori has embraced cd length, and not noticed that this is a technical expansion of storage space, nothing to do with the amount we can listen to and entirely grasp. Hansen, a native of Brisbane, Australia, joined the band a year after its 1991 formation. She was 36 years old. "It is with great regret and deep sadness that we announce the death of Mary," posted Martin Pike, who co-owns Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with founding members Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, on Stereolab's official Web site. "The suddenness of her death has shocked the band," the surviving members of Stereolab said in an official statement. "Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who will miss her greatly. Mary was born in Maryborough, Brisbane, and her funeral will take place there next week." Hansen first appeared on 1992's "LoFi" single and all subsequent releases, including such acclaimed discs as 1994's "Mars Audiac Quintet" and 1996's "Emperor Tomato Ketchup." In addition to work with Stereolab, Hansen has appeared on discs by Moonshake, the High Llamas, Mouse On Mars, and Brokeback. Stereolab released eight full-length albums in the past decade; its most recent, "Sound-Dust" (Elektra) debuted at No. 11 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart in September 2001. It's not a cover, nor was it a hit outside of Anime enthusiast circles as far as I know. It can be found on the U.S. CD, "Twilight", or the U.K. release, "The Race of a Thousand Camels". Those two CDs are nearly the same, with a couple of track differences - the U.S. version was released later. If you like Duvet, you'll probably really like the entire album. It's good, straightforward pop-rock - nothing groundbreakingly inventive but Jasmine's vocals can be quite irresistable. You probably wouldn't know it by using a search engine, but the Boa website can be found at www.boaweb.co.uk, and includes som mp3s. The group is very ectoish in sound. it's hard to find info on japanese groups, or so i've found -- it took me two years to track down OOIOO after reading a concert review in a Tokyo english-language "time out" sort of guide that compared Yoshimi's vocals to Kate Bush brushing her teeth with a chain saw. who could resist? ;) probably because of Yoshimi's Boredoms connection, OOIOO got a US release and a page in the All Music Guide last year. for those who haven't found it, the AMG is the best attempt yet (IM-occasionally-HO) to be the IMDB of music -- it's the first place i go after checking the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music. 'tis to be found at so, checking the AMG for BOA turns up a number of bum leads, but ah ha! here's a japanese release that looks likely: there's one album, "No. 1", available as an import. there's a list of song titles -- maybe one of them will fit what you heard. there are two names listed with the (as the?) group: Rize and Sam Lee. Searching for BOA +Rize on Google truns up a bunch of japanese music links -- some of which are in english (though not necessarily any more comprehensible, japanese pop music being one of the great mysteries...). The problem may lie with the fact that _Twilight_ (the band's sole North American disc) was put out by Pioneer, one of the production partners in _Serial Experiments Lain_. Pioneer knows how to work the video market, for sure, but like JVC-Victor, they seem to be all thumbs when it comes to promoting the music... Not only didn't the CD click with me, but it was something I found actively annoying. I listened to it a few times and put it away for a year to see if it would have any staying power. A year later and I could find nothing that lifted the disc above mediocre, and I found it hard to listen to. It is one of approximately 5 CD's that I haven't kept over 15 years of CD buying. I recall that Glen had a rather amusing review of the first album on his site: http://www.furia.com/twas (He reviews the second album too.) neal now editing: Laurianne Fiorentino at the Outpost (one of my favorite locals who I think would be liked by ecto, but unlikely to be heard - http://www.lauriannef.com) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #345 **************************
