Listening to the new His Name Is Alive CD, the second of which features vocalist Lovetta Pippen (great name), reminds me of how much I miss gospel-r&b vocalists who focus on songs, rather than showing off. The current phase of HNIA finds Warn Defever exploring the more atmospheric side of old school r&b. Its an intimate sound constructed of sax fills, piano and acoustic guitar that occasionally expands into roadhouse blues raunchiness. Its chillout music that sort of an acoustic analog to the territory mined by Morcheeba (perhaps the project could be renamed Less-cheeba). Highlights include the dark, creepy song Crawling, the oddball gospel-meets-indiepop of I Have Special Powers, and a wonderful, moody version of Jimi Hendrixs Train. - --Craig ===== Reviews of esoteric, atmospheric literature, music and movies: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ethereality/ Yahoo! I do remember he had some lovely Maori backing vocalists. Apparently he's really big in New Zealand. I was wondering if anyone had any words of advice on her two albums. Amazon says that this song is on the Canadian release of her first album. I sure liked her version.
