Speaking of CHICAGO. Is the GREEN MILL around still? Everytime I went to CHICAGO for a long weekend, I ended up there on SUNDAY night to see PATRICIA BARBER sing. The cover was only $5 and she's just a great jazz piano player. I am not sure if she still plays there or not, but the bar is also just a nifty bar. It's quite possible that she has moved on, as she's developed a bit of a name for herself, but if she is there, I'd definitely recommend it. It should be listed in the CHICAGO READER. And definite poke you heard into RECKLESS RECORDS if it is still around. I used to find numerous hard to find CD's and vinyl items there. The one in SF closed down (probably due to the fact that AMOEBA moved in four blocks down from it in the HAIGHT) but I think the one is CHICAGO is still around. >> I know there has been a lot of comment about Frou Frou on this list, and >> having seen Imogen Heap live and been impressed with her songs, >> musicianship and immense charisma I was looking forward to getting >> the album, which I've finally done. In fact after listening to it twice, I put it on the shelf and refused to listen to it again. It took me hearing a few FROU FROU songs for me to pull it out and give it another shot. Now I can appreciate it, but it doesn't do as much for me as the FROU FROU album does. >> My biggest objection is what's been done to her voice. There's one (shudder) vocorder bit. I > _detest_ vocoder. I wonder if that is why I don't like the latest BETH ORTON album as much. It just isn't as engaging as her previous two albums. Hmmm. Strangely it was the vocals on I MEGAPHONE that I didn9t like, which led me to originally shelve the CD. IMOGEN's breathy affected voice bothered me so much that I couldn9t get past it, and thus never liked the whole CD. With FROU FROU, her singing style is much more straightforward, which might be what you are interpreting as lack of character. I just viewed it more as a maturity in her singing voice. She recorded I MEGAPHONE when she was a teenager. For me, FROU FROU was a vast improvement over her histrionic singing on her solo album. Which is probably why I liked it more so. > Speaking of scripts, the script book for "Once More, With Feeling" has hit > the shelves. Now I know what to get my friend for her birthday! We can act out and do our own living room version of the show! I do hope that someone tells JOSS that when the SEASON SIX DVD set comes out, there HAS TO BE included in the special features a KAROAKE VERSION of ONCE MORE WITH FEELING. That would so rock. And instead of a bouncing ball, there should be a bouncing bunny. > And speaking of which, FX is probably saving the musical for a special > airing at some point ... which is stupid, because that episode sets up > *everything* that happens for the rest of the season. Morons. :P Don't blame FX for that. When UPN signed BUFFY on, they had a rider in the contract that they would have first crack at any reruns of BUFFY when it went into syndication. That's why when FX ran BUFFY the first time round, they aired every episode except for THE BODY and HUSH. UPN ran those two as reruns during the sixth season I believe, and then FX got the rights to them afterwards. Most likely, ONCE MORE WITH FEELING will be rerun sometime on UPN in its' abbreviated state, and then FX will be allowed to run it when they run Season Six. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 05:07:17 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: recent Hi all.. Reckless is in several locations in Chicago and Evanston and does huge business. And Patricia Barber still plays semi-regularly at Green Mill though she's on hiatus at the moment. I think that's more of a spring/summer thing for her. She can definitely play much larger places here and does but I think she appreciates the intimacy of Green Mill. In that smaller setting she plays more obscure material, too. I recall an absolutely stunning version of "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" last time I saw her. Recommended to anyone who has a chance to see her. (ezydvd.com.au and devoted.com.au.) I'm not an expert, but I don't think the Japanese companies make any DVD players that come all-region from the factory. They are probably all modded somewhere along the line before they hit the retail channel. And DVDs aren't cheap for the people who live down under, the rest of us are just getting a nice exchange rate. Whedon said that the original (long) version of the Buffy musical episode would never air again on TV, so maybe they haven't taken the time to trim it for a one hour slot yet. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 10:14:56 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Buffy + London recap - --- Neal Copperman wrote: It was a > real treat to see trad British music while I was > there. No, they have; they've showed it in re-runs. The episode isn't part of the syndication package for some obscure reason. IIRC it had to do with the soundtrack recording and a possible one-shot release of the overlong version all by itself on DVD. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 18:01:54 -0800 From: "William Mazur" Subject: House concert addendum Hello Everyone, Here is a quick addendum that Phil asked me to send out. Two main points: 1) Please RSVP to Phil - Please don't just show up because there is limited seating. We won't be able to accommodate any overflow. We don't want to turn anyone away. 2) Please arrive before 7:00 PM, so we don't need someone on door duty all evening. There will be a "hanging out" room away from the performance area for audience members to go. Thanks! Hope to see some of you Bay Area Ectophiles there! BTW, obviously Phil is alive and well. He hopes to re-join the list in the relatively near future. He has gone through many changes over the past six months. Most of them have been positive. I will let him tell you more when he rejoins the list. I'm sure that some of you miss his witty banter. In fact, I miss *any* kind of banter - Ecto has been very quiet for a very long time and most messages we do get are announcements and such... Thank goodness we still have Buffy to talk about :) Personally, I don't have much to contribute these days because I don't buy as many records as I used to. This change can be traced to the time just over a year ago when I adopted 5 cats. Now it seems they are literally eating through the disposable income I used to spend on CDs! It's the yearly top-10 time again, (AGAIN?!?) and I was just thinking - top-10, what top-10? I am not even sure I bought 10 CDs this year...
