Highland tradition dictates men should wear nothing beneath their pleated skirts, in accordance with the saying: "Nothing is worn beneath the kilt -- it's all in perfect working order." I was wondering if someone would burn me a copy (I will send a disk and pay for its return). I am only asking because the album is difficult to find and I did purchase a copy at full retail price when I was in Canada years ago. I would be really happy and grateful to anyone who could do this for me. And now for some ecto content. Let's see, since I'm on the subject of Christmas music, Bukkene Bruse's album The Loveliest Rose is really beautiful. The Norwegian quartet includes fiddler Annbjorg Lien who has 4 wonderful solo albums. The Loveliest Rose is mostly instrumental and was recorded in a church. Somehow that is important to me because it seems to really come through on the album. It sounds very open and spacious, and spiritual. The songs are all ones I am unfamiliar with. Some, like St. Sunniva are based on Norwegian tradition. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Nordic music and/or is looking for something a little different from the usual holiday fare. And speaking of Annbjorg Lien, I am reminded I also lost her Baba Yaga album years ago. If anyone could copy that for me (same deal as above; and yes, I did purchase an original, retail copy), I would be most appreciative. (ezydvd.com.au and devoted.com.au.) Well, here in the United States of Region 1, we're accustomed to getting all the goodies first, and at prices that don't usually justify going half-way around the globe to purchase them. As a result, almost nobody here cares about getting region-free players. As a result there's no incentive here for manufacturers and stores to sell region free players in the US, especially in the face of legal ugliness. - -J ------------------------------ Date: 02 Dec 2002 23:34:02 +0100 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: Re: Buffy season 6 reruns on FX [Greg Bossert]: > > though i note that at least germany and france are working on > joining canada in taxing blank media and passing some of that > revenue to the poor poor "content owners". as someone who records > his own music, that just tickles me pink. well yeah, but we (Norway) already have that fee for blank tapes. this isn't so bad, since it is an admission from the content owners that copying is legal. My biggest objection is what's been done to her voice. Is it just me or has it been "tweaked" with that programme that brings notes in tune?? The use of this ghastly technology has become very prevalent of late; I'm sure Beth Orton's new album has been thus doctored - her vocals have never been bang-on as far as hitting the notes is concerned, but being tweaked has the extremely unfortunate side-effect of removing most if not all of the character from the voice, and even Beth's unique delivery sounds, for want of a better word, flat, not in the technical musical sense but in a general sense. (Ok, I was a tourist, so it was more or less obligatory.) In case you Buffy fan(atic)s care, a fine likeness is enshrined within. Seems like I spent most of my time in London seeing theater, which really isn't a bad way to go. Much of it was big and mainstream, but there were a few odder moments. Most notable was the incredible modern opera Hashirigaki by Heiner Goebbels. It was breathtaking, and would probably appeal to many ectofolk. Stunning staging that turned objects from purpose to purpose (bells became balloons in one notable scene), full of music (based on traditional Japanese and the Beach Boys!) and musical language (from Gertrude Stein's The Making of Americans). One play that I was unable to get into was Peepshow, which was built around the music of Lamb! I also had the notable chance of seeing an actual ecto production :) Adam Kimmel was in the midst of the debut of his play Awake. It was fun to have an excuse to see a Fringe play, as well as fun to meet a fellow ectophile I've traded music with. As a bonus, I thoroughly enjoyed the play too. Much of it took place in a netherworld piano bar inhabited by the spirit of insomniacs, which was an interesting concept that I thought worked really well. Hope the production went well Adam. Music-wise, I saw a few concerts. The first was a night of local singer/songwriters, which started with a few piano-based women. They were nice, but didn't wow me (Ella Jones, Karen Ferry). Then came a local folk group called La Honda, which was fine also. But the evening ended on a very interesting note with a performance by Maori singer Toni Huarta. The paper had made a big deal of how she was mixing traditional Maori music with modern elements, like electronics and drum-and-bass, but from where I sat, it looked very traditional to me. And while it was the mixture that attracted me, I was perfectly happy with the traditional. She had a backing band and a female back-up singer, all in native garb and tattoo'ed below the lower lip for that fierce look when they wanted it. The music had that feel that connects a lot of tribal traditional music, that makes native american have a similar feel to Sami music. The most fun was when she invited Maori from the audience up, and I discovered there were at least 20 natives in the audience. Many didn't look native, but they all knew the Maori song she sang and the dance that went with it. It was a lot of fun. Also perfectly timed for my visit was the start of the English Roots tour that featured Waterson:Carthy and a handful of guests. It was a real treat to see trad British music while I was there. Eliza Carthy has an amazing stage presence. Even thouth she wasn't the main attraction, she really dominated the stage. I was sorry their wasn't more of her music, though everything was good, and Norma Watterson demonstrated that she had trouble counting backwards on one number. neal np: Chaos and Calm - Still on the Hill ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Dec 2002 00:19:18 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Fwd: from Ectophiles' Guide - message from Steev Richter, formerly of Drama Chic Hi, Neile forwarded: >>i'm steev richter. i played at the first ever ectofest in danbury, >>connecticut with the band drama chic, Not only did drama chic play at the first ever ectofest, but they *opened* the first ever ectofest! I have to heartily agree with this -- thanks to Jason Gordon for the tip. We saw her do a feature set at a local open mic a few months back, and she was amazing. She is very much in the downtown NYC art-rock vein. Hey Neile -- did you sent him info on joining ecto? I'll be happy to if not... ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Chris & Meredith Thompson, 12/8/02 ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 22:34:50 -0800 From: "William Mazur" Subject: Terami Hirsh / Vienna Teng house concert in SF on Saturday 12/7 Happy Holidays my fellow Ectophiles!
