The _real_ question is (and it's a two-parter): How's the Borders' ectoish music selection, and how good is your discount? :) - -Kat ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 12:45:49 -0500 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: thoughts on 4 new albums Vonda Shepard - Chinatown Not quite as good as _By 7:30_ and not nearly as good as _It's Good, Eve_, but still a solid album. If you like Vonda, you'll find enough here to enjoy; if you don't like her already, this won't make you a fan. There are some catchy tunes, like "Rainy Days," but generally the lyrics are sub-par. And while I can understand and admire her desire to trying new things, songs like "Gyroscope" and the minimoog-bogged "My Whole World" stray too far from her core piano-based ballads that I love so much. Emm Gryner - Asianblue It's interesting that Emm devotes a full page to noting that the album was entirely independently done, because the album it most reminds me of is Public. I like Public, so, to me, this is not a bad thing. It's definitely a return to poppier songwriting, sort of like the songs of Public filtered through the production sensibilities of Science Fair. I don't use pop in a demeaning way as many people do. I think good pop music is hard to make and hard to find. I could imagine many of the songs on here more stripped down, and it would be interesting to hear how she performs them solo. Dot Allison - We Are Science Dot Allison's new album is something of a surprise, partly because I didn't know she was making one and because of the album itself, and because of how much I like it. It has links with her debut, _Afterglow_, but it's very different too. I could see someone liking one album but not the other. Me, I like both. _We Are Science_ has a techno, retro-80s feel to it, and some of the electronic noises annoy me a little, but are less unsettling with repeated listenings. There are a few songs like "We're Only Science" that eschew traditional songwriting and instead repeat the title words like a mantra. So the album begins with a vocalization (an "oh" or "ah") followed by a driving beat, and the first words come nearly a minute and a half into the song. There are some other lyrics further in, but you can't understand them (at least I can't). Other songs have a more traditional verse-refrain structure, and one near the end even reminds me of something from Mazzy Star's _So Tonight That I Might See_. The US release comes with a video for "Strung Out" and remixes of 2 tracks that are actually very good and add something to the songs. Was it Irvin who was looking for dance music to exercise to? This album would certainly work, particularly the remixes. Shivaree - Rough Dreams Shivaree is back with another group of songs with eclectic influences - all the same ones from their first album, more electric, and some electronica too. Unfortunately, the album doesn't really gel for me until track 8, the wonderful first single, "John 2 <" which reminds me of "Goodnight, Moon." The rest of the album is fantastic. One of the early exceptions is track 3, "After the Prince and the Showgirl" which has these tinkling bells that make it sound like it came from the 60s. And there's another track that sounds like 70s soundtrack music (which sounds bad, but I don't mean it too; I really like it). Maybe it's an uneven album or the first songs might just need to grow on me more. Probably both. It still hasn't been released in the US, and I had to order it from ABSound. All in all, I'd say if you really loved the first album, go ahead and track this down. If you weren't that high on the first album, I'd wait for a US release. Of course, if you live outside the US, then I'd recommend it either way. An even more elaborate stage presentation than the Secret World tour. The stage set up is "in-the-round"...and rather than a separate stage across the arena like the SW tour, there's a separate stage opens up ABOVE the main one. Personally, I think Up is his best since Security and though the music is dark and dense, Gabriel was typically playful on-stage and even hilarious at times: Bicycling around the stage during "Solsbury Hill" and rolling/bouncing around inside a clear ball that looks like some kind of massive, bizarre molecule during "Growing Up". Fantastic band, as always, that includes his daughter Melanie on vocals lending a great poignancy to their "Mercy Street" duet. So much more..... I've seen every PG solo tour since '77 (yeah, I'm old), and he's never failed to provide memories for a lifetime. If it's coming near you and isn't sold out, run, don't walk to buy tickets. The discount is quite good, though restraint will be needed (hah). - -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 00:05:52 -0500 From: meredith Subject: trina hamlin in CT Hi, Attention Connecticut 'philes: mark your calendar for this Thursday, November 21. Trina Hamlin will be at the Acoustic Cafe. If we ever want to see her at the Cafe again, there needs to be a lot of people sitting in seats at this show ... so bring all your friends and meet me and woj there! Info is at . I just got back from seeing Trina at The Space, an underground space in Hamden (just up the street from here) that hosts open mics every Tuesday. She was this week's feature, and blew everyone away. She ended the evening by jamming with an open mic regular on blues harp -- it was stunning. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Chris & Meredith Thompson, 12/8/02 ============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #324 **************************
