I remember being INCREDIBLY frustrated with them, because each issue was beautiful but they came out in increasingly slower increments. It was so sporadic, that everytime a new issue came out, I would have to go back and reread the entire series. It felt like a year passed between the last few issues. But I probably it was only a few months. I think there were publishing issues to (one of the publishers went out business in the middle of the series? I can't remember). Anyway does anyone know if there is any difference between the collected hardback version of the graphic novel and the comics that came out separately? Was there any extra added artwork that makes it worth checking out? Speaking of sporadic. Does anyone know if issue 7 and 8 of FRAY (the JOSS WHEDON comic book about the slayer set in the future) has come yet? Are there plans on ever releasing it and does anyone know if there future plans on a collected graphic novel of it? thanks irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 04:29:22 EST From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: Re: miyazaki, frou frou, and other things I didn't realize until after my sister got me the Ghibli DVD set that it was pirated. honest! Has anyone else who has watched several Ghibli movies noticed that, at the end, you're left with a kind of bittersweet wistfulness? They just don't settle for neat and tidy endings and you're left wondering and wanting more. It's inevitable that comparisons would be made between Frou Frou's album and Imogen Heap's solo effort (which was in my top 5 of 1998). The first three songs are right up there for me, while the rest of the album varies between alright and good. I lent it to my friend Nick who really enjoyed the concert (except for the dancing wookie in front of us) when they played here earlier this fall. I also recently finally got Eleanor McEvoy's _Yola_. Still soaking it in. I really dig the sparse, organic sound of the album. It seems very free, live, barebones, and intimate. Some of the songs (especially the first one) are, *ahem*, da bomb; but there are others that make me cringe. I think it's the lyrics that does me in. Juliette Lewis was working with Linda Perry here the past week. Apparently she's working on a demo and wants to have a recording contract. *shrug* She did a fair job singing for the movie Strange Days. Well, I missed Bonfire Madigan in L.A. last week. 'FBI' is short for 'Frank Boeijen Information', and Frank Boeijen is, as some of you will know, a Dutch singer. PREHISTORY In FBI Magazine no. 79 there was an article about websites with Frank Boeijen as the subject. Besides a lot of Dutch sites (of which the official one at www.frankboeijen.nl is the most complete one, surprisingly!) there's a short rundown of small ones and references to Frank on other sites. And then, suddenly, there's the EctoGuide! [...] "A site in English is ectoguide.usrbin.ca/artists/b/boeijen.frank.html, where Dutch fans explain who 'Frenk Booyen' is. Most beautiful sentence: 'For emotional impact and contents of his lyrics perhaps, he could be compared to Harry Rhodes.' But: who the hell is Harry Rhodes!!??" [...] I was of course surprised by this, not least because of the huge typo in Happy[!]'s name. Which is why I submitted the article below. Some of the info in the article was taken from English sources, and now translated back into English. Typos, translation errors, style crimes etc. are mine, all mine. Still, happy reading! From: FBI Magazine no. 81 October/November 2002 page 24 Who the hell is Happy Rhodes? Hans Walraven asked in 'Taal van de tekst' (FBI Magazine 79): 'Who the hell is Harry [sic] Rhodes?'. Get acquainted to Happy Rhodes, an American singer/songwriter who may have some differences, but certainly also has some similarities with Frank Boeijen. Happy Rhodes was born on August 9th, 1965 as Kimberley Tyler Rhodes, but because her brother called her 'Happy' from the very beginning, her name soon became 'Happy'. She started playing guitar when she was eleven, and after a somewhat difficult period in school she started playing in clubs and bars in the '80s, using only her guitar as accompaniment. In 1984 Happy started recording her songs, which she wrote and composed herself, for the label Aural Gratification, owned by Kevin Bartlett, a local artist who sold his own compositions on tapes. De tapes by Happy Rhodes soon became a local success. Demand increased when Vickie Mapes, a DJ in Chicago, started playing Happy's songs in her radio program. A group of fans flocked together in the internet mailing list Ecto. In the beginning discussions revolved around Happy Rhodes, but the attention soon expanded to other 'unknown' artists. When the internet gained popularity outside of the USA, the list artists grew every year. In 1991 Aural Gratification started releasing cd's. Happy Rhodes released nine cd's in the five following years, after which she changed her record company. 'Many worlds are born tonight' (1998) is her most recent album and was officially released in Europe for the first time. Rhodes versus Boeijen Happy Rhodes is ofter compared to Kate Bush. And indeed, sometimes her voice is remarkably similar to that of the English singer. But, the range of Happy's voice is - certainly in the lower regions - much broader. Just like Frank she writes almost all her songs herself. There are some lyrical similarities to Frank's work. But the similarities are especially obvious when looking at the music. Happy's early work can be identified by its sparse accompaniment: a guitar, sometimes a keyboard, sometimes a drum machine. The keys (and synths) because more important on the third and fourth cd, and are almost central in the sixth album 'Equipoise' (1993). The compilation album 'Rhodesongs' (1993) can be viewed as Happy's version of 'Onderweg' (Frank Boeijen Groep, 1988), because it gives a good overview of her work until then (and is therefore a good introduction for starting listeners of Rhodes' music). More varied instrumentation can be found on 'Building the colossus' (1994), an album that combined personal lyrics like that of the title track ('There's an ideal person hiding, lurking, waiting inside of me') with lyrics about society (in 'Just like Tivoli', a song dedicated to children of war). Changing record companies in 1991 meant a different approach for Frank. This also goes for Happy: her most recent album has a 'science fiction' theme and contains a lot of samples for the first time. The intricate melody lines don't give themselves easily to the listener, but they do mean that there's lots to discover on this cd. Information We don't have enough space here to analyse lyrical similarities between Happy and Frank. It's best to discover these yourself. Her cd's are available at Fame in Amsterdam, but of course also via the internet - on the official website www.auntiesocialmusic.com. Here you can also find more information about Happy Rhodes herself. On www.smoe.org you can find information about the Ectophiles Guide to Good Music (in which you can also find Frank) and the Ecto mailing list. ======================= Kind regards, Marcel Rijs - marcel.rijs@kb.nl afd. I checked the credits (thanks, tivo!), and it was Angie Hart. - -j ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 05:01:54 +1300 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Scarlet's Walk (Karen writes lots of things) Tori is a great musician, and, on this album, a very good songwriter and lyricist, but she isn't a magician. She hasn't cast any songs that resonate like 'Little Earthquakes,' her-diary-as-our-mirror, or that invite you to explore denser, more personal topics like 'Under the Pink', or entwine the listener as the tangled personal metaphors of tortured 'Pele' did, or pull you into the separate worlds like those contained in each 'Choirgirl' song. I'm not compelled by Scarlet. She walks along musical paths carved out of thousands of previous footprints. I've been listening to 'Scarlet's Walk' every day but still haven't finished the album. It runs from the beginning to a few songs in, and when I get to know that section I add another song and return to the beginning. That is how I used to learn to play pieces (though badly, with a cat rrowling to get the noise to stop) - practice the first few bars, add another few, start again. This avoids being overwhelmed by a large number of new songs, as then songs blur and I become disappointed. Expectation is a bugger. On headphones my head isn't full of sounds in different places like usually with Tori - the production is two dimensional, like a photograph with harsh even lighting. The trashy portable stereos at our place make the album sound even flatter. Not that I can play it at our house - one of my flatmates has a Tori/Datsuns (they're from his hometown) showdown planned; the guys did a mock air guitar vs. a wailing whispy girlie battle, and there is no need to encourage them. They like the map though. I love maps - you can be speeding down that road or exploring that canyon, just by peering at the lines. If I had a car, and it had a stereo, I'd drive to this album. Due to my listening pattern I know the beginning of the album very well. 'Amber Waves' first reminded me of Meat Loaf, then piano cabaret, but despite those insults I couldn't dislike it, though no necessarily liking it. Porn actors are a thoroughly boring topic though (give me songs about gardeners and indexers). However, feeling lost, dreams shattered, that's interesting stuff for lyrics to work with, so hmm. The lyrics tell the story very well, a standard followed by the rest of the album. There are so many things I love about 'Scarlet's Walk,' and then I dislike aspects of the same songs. Sometimes it's the struggle between the song and how it exists on this album, since like many I've strong opinions about what I love in Tori's music and the songs have an existence outside of the album version. 'Strange' is lovely and simple (and predictable) but the subtle-as-a-falling-piano string section (wave your lighters), that John Williams approach to orchestration, is so trashy. I don't like the Rhodes, which makes sleazy 70s sounds in 'Crazy' and spoils bits of other songs for me. 'Carbon' has a complex structure and sometimes I want it to do the glorious pop thing that the musically similar 'Siren' does. 'Your Cloud' is a sleepy sunny song that is also lazy in the boring uninspired way - a languid jazzy piece with a melody that might have been made up on the spot. Reminds me of my humming when I get bored. Unfortunately I have to skip it, so I miss the Happy Rhodes style backing vocals that have been mentioned here - I burst out laughing upon first hearing those :). 'Pancake' was such a gorgeous fierce piece when she played it solo on radio shows, and here it has standard churning background guitars and drums, giving the song an even pace which fire can't burst out of. I'm not too impressed by her drummer, he sounds more like a drum machine than previously. I'm avoiding 'Virginia', the solo renditions sounded so perfect and it's haunted by 'Sister Janet', so Tori's sure to have layered the Rhodes on top and put a thunking drum track behind it. Originally humble songs like 'Wednesday,' 'Mrs Jesus' and 'a sorta fairytale' can slip by, and then you realise how wonderful the lyrics are, not flighty little jaunts after all. I can't sum up - I haven't finished listening yet! Much enjoyment, but no tears. Hope you're all well, I'm enjoying the new Umberto Eco (a romp) Karen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 23:08:03 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Tonight's Buffy band?
