Kiki's Delivery Service is utterly charming, and made even more poignant by the one of the last performances by the late comedian Phil Hartman, to whom the engish version is dedicated. It is beautiful and a great story. The other is Panda Go Panda , which is from Miazaki's pre-Ghibli days. I also reccomend the subtitled Castle Cagliostra and Laputa. Boxed sets of Studio Ghibli dvds can be gotten on ebay. my heart belongs to Totoro :-) Juliet Philip David Morgan wrote: > Mina-san, konbanwa! > > > ...I'd love to have a subtitled copy of [_Sprited Away_], i hope it will be > > released that way but knowing disney [and though i'm glad someone > > picked this up, did it have to be disney??] i'm not too hopeful. > > we'll see i guess. > > Disney/Buena Vista has a cozy relationship with Tokuma Japan Communications, > whose assets include Studio Ghibli and the Daiei Co. Disney will be releasing the Ghibli films in the US, but there's no schedule as yet. They've had a big name actor English dub of Laputa in the can for going on two years, but the reset will be released as is (although several already have English language tracks). - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: 11 Nov 2002 11:59:10 -0800 From: "Michael Pearce" Subject: re: Spirited Away At 1:55 AM -0500 11/11/02, Damon Harper wrote: > >i'd love to have a subtitled copy of `sprited away', i hope it will be >released that way but knowing disney [and though i'm glad someone >picked this up, did it have to be disney??] i'm not too hopeful. >we'll see i guess. You can buy it, with subtitles, from Amazon UK. It's Region 2, so you will need to be running Linux and Xine, or be able to reset the region coding of your DVD reader. I did that on my iBook and now just don't use it for Region 1. I also managed to buy an Apex with the secret menu that disables regional codes off the Web a couple of years ago. They're out there; you just gotta search. Start with retailers in Hong Kong. It's a beautiful film. Which reminds me... this weekend I was at a local bookstore and was browsing the graphic novel selection. Seems a bunch of out of print stuff has been reprinted, much to my excitement. I picked up the Neil Gaiman/Charles Vess colaboration Stardust: Being a Romance Within the Realm of Faerie, which I'd been wanting for a few years. Even better though, was a full hardback version of the entire Cages series from David McKean. Despite my wanting this ever since I saw a few of the single issues, I failed to grab the $50 hardback book. When I got home, I looked on Amazon and found it was available their for only $35. Just wanted to pass that along in case anyone wants to grab them. neal np: shallow water - tom kimmel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 15:17:00 -0600 From: "Chad Lundgren" Subject: Re: OT Gaiman (was Re: OT: Spirited Away) Hi all, neal said: > Even better though, was a full hardback version of the entire Cages series > from David McKean. I get a 20% discount, so I got it for $40. The book is worth it for the art alone, which given that it's Dave McKean art, is simply beautiful. His sequential art is great, but the painted artwork is gorgeous. I had to install shelving in my apartment for my rapidly expanding graphic novel collection. Some other nifty Gaiman items are graphic novel adaptations of some of his short stories with art by John Bolton and P. Craig Russell. "Murder Mysteries" (Russell) and "Harlequin Valentine" (Bolton) are very nice. And Sandman fans should pick up "Sandman Presents: The Furies" written by Mike Carey with painted art by John Bolton. If there's any comic book writer out there worthy of pivking up the torch from Neil, it's Mike Carey. The story is self contained and features Lyta Hall and Daniel the new incarnation of Dream. If you like it, check out Carey's work with Lucifer. It's the best stuff relating to the Sandman canon since the series ended. I shall stop raving now, Chad ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #316 **************************
