Today they have Emm Gryner. I had not heard, let alone seen her before. Petite and asian looking, she performs here with glitter on her eyelids. Chat and nice music. This prog is from Virginia. Those in big cities may have a PBS station that airs this prog. Look for it. bye, KrW "It's not lady-like to make such noise with your gum!" I've got to tell you about this great movie I just saw, a Japanese animated film called "Spirited Away" . This anime was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This means little to me as I am not familiar at all with Japanese anime ,but he is supposedly the master of the art form . Anyway it's a fantasy about a ten year old girl who gets lost in the spirit world. Somewhat reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, steeped in Japanese mythology. If you have kids, take them. if you don't have kids, go yourself ! The animation is wonderful and dream-like. You won't regret it. Too bad there's none around NYC. Today they have Emm Gryner. Hey, thanks for the heads up!!! I had no idea. Channel 13 in NYC is carrying this show next Saturday, 11/16 at 11:30 pm EST. TiVo is now primed and ready to go. :) >I had not >heard, let alone seen her before. Petite and asian looking, she performs >here with glitter on her eyelids. Chat and nice music. Emm is a cool bean. Well worth checking out if she's playing in your area. Tori's new album has a couple of very Emm moments (how's that for turning a too-often-made comparison on its ear?), particularly at the very beginning of "Mrs. Jesus". ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Chris & Meredith Thompson, 12/8/02 ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 20:43:45 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: OT: Spirited Away Hi, Russ posted: >Hi Folks.Forgive this off-topic blurb. I'm exceedingly lame when it comes to actually getting out to see movies (as in, I *still* haven't seen _My Big Fat Greek Wedding_ :P), so I haven't seen _Spirited Away_ yet. But I can tell you to run, not walk to your nearest rental emporium and pick up _Princess Mononoke_, Miyazaki's previous masterpiece. I can even recommend the American version, since the translation was adapted by Neil Gaiman. It's a beautiful film. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Chris & Meredith Thompson, 12/8/02 ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 19:53:51 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Elefante I've been listening to Elefante, from Mexico; sort of the 10,000 Maniacs of the Latin world and with a male singer. Disney/Buena Vista has a cozy relationship with Tokuma Japan Communications, whose assets include Studio Ghibli and the Daiei Co. Ltd. I believe they are partially invested in Tokuma, but I'd have to check the facts... > thanks to steve for pointing out www.nausicaa.net. maybe i'll track > down a dvd of totoro yet. uh oh... what's a `dubtitle'? that doesn't > sound good. "Dubtitles" are captions based on the script used for an English dub. And you're not the only one who has a hangup with them. For those who have yet to check out _Princess Mononoke_ a/k/a _Mononoke-hime_, your best bet is Disney/Miramax's letterboxed DVD. You will not only get the English and French soundtracks but also the Japanese one. They even authored the DVD (region 1 only) so that you can set it up to play the movie in its subtitled version - with all titles and credits in _kanji_. Essentially, you... 1) allow the disc to load, and wait for the main menu. Once it's loaded, tab to "Setup" and tap OK on your remote. 2) Go to "languages" and tap OK.. 3) Select "Japanese" and tap OK again. You'll be brought back to the Setup menu, but your soundtrack selection will be saved (or should be). 4) Now go to "Captions" and tap OK. 5) Once there, select "English (Literal translation)" and tap OK. This is the crucial step. You'll be brought back to the Setup menu. Exit to Main Menu. 6) Once there, _play_. That should do the job. I will not be surprised if Disney's (eventual) DVD of _Spirited Away_ is done the same way. There is a soundtrack album (music by longtime Miyazaki associate Joe Hisaishi, unless I'm mistaken) on Studio Ghibli Records in Japan and Milan in the States (they also have the U.S. soundtrack CD of _Princess Mononoke_). You can read a critical essay on the film at Akadot, an online magazine written by and for _otaku_ like me: http://www.akadot.com/article/article-spiritedaway-01.html Just for the record, the original title of the film is _ Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi_, which roughly means "Chihiro spirited away as Sen" - a reference to the name theft that occurs to our heroine a little into the story. (It reminds me a bit of _The Glass Mountain_, Diane Wolkstein's picture book retelling of the Brothers Grimm's "Old Rinkrank"; the heroine also has her name stolen away, albiet by the passage of time.) I can understand, though, how most Yanks wouldn't get it - or at least straight away. Before I forget, _Totoro_ was supposed to be ported by Fox onto a Region 1 DVD, but only in English and pan-scan at that. I think I'll wait until the rights change hands. Oh, yes... just in case anyone's heading for Tokyo in the coming months, take a look at: http://www.ghibli-museum.jp/ The Ghibli Museum Mitaka is supposed to be quite an attraction, worth the added ticket expense (and ticket ordering proceedure). Interestingly enough, I have a Japanese correspondent (she helps produce the English versions of iText and LightWayText for the Mac) who happens to live near the place.
