What is wrong > with you people?!? :) Well, I found a pretty good deal ordering the DVD edition online, but it's apparently being shipped via carrier pigeon, so I'm *still* waiting for it. Rest assured, I'll be spinning this puppy as soon as it's in my hot little hands. In the meantime, I've been listening to (and enjoying) Sixpence's _Divine Discontent_, and Joan Osborne's _How Sweet it Is_. I'm not generally a fan of soul/r&b, but Joan's vocal timbre suits the material quite nicely, and -- as of earlier this evening -- I can say from personal experience that she and the band kick serious butt performing this material live. There was a good mix of songs from this album and _Relish_, with a truly beautiful and moving performance of "St. Teresa" during the brief 2-song encore. 'Twas a grand night out. I also got my copy of Vienna Teng's _Waking Hour_ in yesterday's mail. I placed my advance order directly with her when she played here a few weeks ago, and hardly expected it a) several days ahead of release day (woohoo!) and b) with such a nice, sweet (and lengthy :) inscription. Thank you Vienna, I'm glad you enjoyed the show as much as we did. John ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Nov 2002 07:41:48 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Three MMOH factoids or questions The Henrys have released their most recent CD, _Joyous Porous_, featuring Mary Margaret O'Hara on five songs. (One track, "Li'l Misdemeanor," is perhaps a "song-ette," being only 50 seconds long). It's a lovely CD throughout. Did anyone see the movie "Apartment Hunting"? I understand that MMOH, along with having done the soundtrack, plays a singing street woman. Does she get a lot of screen time? Finally, I heard that Mojo Magazine listed MMOH as one of their top 100 cult artists of all time. Did anyone see this list? I can't find it online. I wonder who shares the list with her. - --Valerie Richardson ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Nov 2002 06:26:38 -0700 From: "Peter Clark" Subject: The Henrys Speaking of The Henrys, does anyone know how to get hold of a copy of "Desert Cure"? Maple Music doesn't have it and it's a mystery to the usual suspects. Just by the quality of the special edition of the album (the DVD, the map, stickers, thingies :) and of the whole Scarlet's Web thing, you know they've gone to great lengths to make this a thorough album. I'm happy cuz the last three tori albums were kinda pushed away by Atlantic. So this is good. Also good is the music! Yay! At first, I wasn't too sure and I still am not because, let's face it, I'll always prefer the girl and piano Tori from Merman, Mother, Twinkle, etc. But I'm getting into what I'm hearing. The piano's there anyway, even if you definitely feel the bass, drums and guitar presence. There are also very few surprises for the Tori fan: no songs where she looses her head at (i.e. Professional Widow, Precious Things, Hotel, The Waitress, Datura, Heart of Gold). I think it's gotta be her most homogenous record since Little Earthquakes and it also sounds more like that record than any of the others. Another good thing is that the album feels very juicy in terms of information and meaning, a lot more than, let's say Strange Little Girls which was much less of an adventure. I'm still processing Scarlet's Walk, but I can already say i love A Sorta Fairytale, Amber Waves, Carbon, I Can't See New York, Virginia and the breathtaking Gold Dust. It litterally takes my breath and replaces it with intense sadness. The second time I heard it I cried my ass off and every time now also. I haven't had this powerful emotional effect from a Tori song quite exactly since Winter. Very amazing song, nostalgic. The reviews I read here were rather abyssmal. I just returned from the States; it wasn't a fun trip -- I was dealing with details about my elderly mother with Alzheimer's. Reviews I read there (Philadelphia) seemed so-so also. However, while driving, I heard "Amber Walk" on the wonderful WXPN and decided that I liked it, even if the reviewers weren't thrilled. I purchased the CD in the US, but I haven't had the chance to listen to all of it yet. (I only arrived home this morning.) Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I'm in the same boat, having decided to order my copy via HMV.com because they were offering the "Scarlet Stories" interview CD with the regular version of the album, so I didn't need to buy two copies to get it (which I'd gathered was the normal deal from what I heard before the album came out). This means I'm not getting the limited edition version, but I'm pretty sure I can live without the charm, map, photos, and even the DVD. I did recently get an order from CDBaby though, so I've had plenty of great stuff to listen too. As I mentioned in a recent "now playing" entry, I finally got a copy of Rachel Smith's _The Clearing_, which is absolutely great. I'm finding that I enjoy it more and more as I keep listening to it, which is always the sign of a good album. I also got the most recent Two Loons For Tea album, _Looking for Landmarks_, which is actually the first of their CDs I've heard. I know, shame, shame. *wry smile* I like it a lot, both for Sarah Scott's great voice and the feel of the music. Last, but definitely not least, I picked up Edie's _Shades_, which Neile had talked about liking. It's excellent, at times reminding me of Kym Brown and at times sounding like Lion and The Cobra era Sinead. A definite find. It's weird, at first things seemed kind of confused (for example, clicking on "news" would bring details of previous albums) but then I went to another part of the site to try the videos and when I came back it suddenly worked OK. Remember it is all done with Flash so perhaps it just takes a long time to load all the bits it needs to function? In any case, I'd suggest trying again, and have patience. It's not the easiest site to get through, but then, neither are Lisa's albums :) - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed." -- Eduardo Galeano - -- 15:40:00 up 7 days, 16:40, 1 user, load average: 0.16, 0.16, 0.17-- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #308 **************************
