I can't wait for the new LOW album. From what I hear, it is a return to the spare production and basic songs like WHEN THE CURTAIN HITS THE CAST. As much as I love the more lush orchestrated sounds of SECRET NAME and THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, I think their strength has always been in creating majestic songs from just a few instruments. There's an interview with LOW in the most recent TOWER magazine PULSE. Free at any TOWER store. Of interest also is the fact that PETER GABRIEL is on the cover and there is a lengthy (well lengthy for PULSE I guess, 4 pages) article/interview with PETER GABRIEL. Also of note for those KaTe fans (and what ECTOPHILE isn't a KaTe fan?) PETER GABRIEL actually mentions KaTe in the article. The article mentions the duet that PETER and KaTe back in '86 (DON'T GIVE UP) in comparison to a new song off of UP called I GRIEVE and mentioned how KaTe "...has been even more elusive than GABRIEL this past decade. ("I saw KaTe a couple of months back and I think she's making noises again." smiles GABRIEL. "I mean, she was being a Mum for a while (sic), and I think also HER Mum had died before that, which sort of knocked her sideways. But I know she's back in the studio, so hopefully we'll hear something from her soon.")...." Anyway check out the article if you happened to be near a TOWER. Now if only some sort of news about KEVIN SHIELDS/MY BLOODY VALENTINE and a new release.... irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 2002 02:06:54 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: waters hi all.. (slight disclaimer: i have written for them, but i'm not in the current issue and i don't get paychecks from them anyway. it's just a really great mag for anyone interested in any of the details of making records.) - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 2002 13:27:33 -0600 From: alberto carrasco Subject: Re: LOW, PETER GABRIEL, Tape Op. So, it's time to do this again. I'm going to be sending out an email item to everyone with an email address in the list, to confirm that the email in the data file is valid. If you do not get this email and want to be on the list, just send me email. The information I "need" is month & day of month. Optional information is year (so the script can tell you what day of the week you were born), an optional sign (defaults to zodiac), and an email address that's different than what you send the mail from. I'm going to try to do this every few months too. May even set up a web interface for birthday list requests, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Thank you for your time. If you have some of these in good condition, I could trade with some of the ones that have the black spine and bottom; or else please point me to a merchant that sells them affordably. And now for some ecto content: "Juanes", from Colombia, has got great lyrics (albeit in Spanish) and an uppity, bouncy sound; he's got two CDs out, recorded in the US; it won't be long before he records in English. I went to see him at a club over the weekend; I have had great luck in the past seeing rising stars in a sparsely attended club, but seeing Juanes at Phoenix's Cajun House was a bad experience; the wait to get in was long, the joint was over-packed with fans pushing on each other, the audio was lousy; after getting a good look at him, and after having listened to a couple of my favorites, I had to bail out. But, still, it was worth the mayhem; the guy is very energetic, seemed to sing from his heart, and made good contact with the audience. Check him out. - - Bill G. np: Shakira - Servicio de Lavander!a (the Latin issue of _Laundry Service_) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Oct 2002 21:29:14 -0700 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Fwd: Slate.com: Miles Davis' Missing Years On Mon, 14 Oct 2002 18:27:36 -0700 (PDT) Neb Rodgers wrote: > Granted, I'm one of the ones that tends to think that those albums > really were that bad, but this article makes it's points, anyway. I'm a huge fan of Miles's post-comeback Columbia CDs: my single favorite disc of his is "Decoy", with "You're Under Arrest" also in the running. They do annoy fans of his earlier work though. There are lots of people who this everything after "Pangaea" was worthless -- though others say the cutoff point may have been with "Tutu", "In a Silent Way", "Round Midnight", or "Birth of the Cool". The Warner Brothers era was, indeed, quite prefab in the studio work, but the band cooked live. And I've liked most of what I heard of each of his '80s live bands, both in the three gigs that I caught and on the much-derided live album "We Want Miles", which has a heart-stoppingly good version of "My Man's Gone Now". For a really good in-depth appreciation of Miles' electric years, check out Paul Tingen's book "Miles Beyond". http://www.miles-beyond.com/ - -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #287 **************************
