Did anyone else read the review in Rolling Stone that trashed the album? I suspect the review didn't understand what Gabriel was doing even though he (or was it she?) stated that s/he thought Gabriel was brilliant on previous albums. I have to wonder what the reviewer thought of the first three. brad nr Lost nl UP Original Message: - ----------------- From: Joseph Zitt jzitt@metatronpress.com Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 17:56:22 -0700 To: dl+ecto@usrbin.ca, ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: New Peter Gabriel (was: college performances) On Tue, 8 Oct 2002 15:12:20 -0700 Damon Harper wrote: > don't get me wrong, i do love _us_, but i rarely play it; _so_ is > probably my least favourite though it certainly has moments. luckily > some of its best moments are on the secret world live 2-cd set, which > is the one other thing post-security i *do* unconditionally adore and > listen to with great regularity. and i'm not usually a huge fan of > live albums, either. Yup! I think Secret World Live was his best thing since Security, and it all came together there. I really love "So" too, but I'm pleased that he's returned to the intricacy of his earlier work with "Up". He's taken the time to get each track just right. I wish I could afford the concerts... but suspect that they may end up as a DVD every bit as good as "Secret World Live". (And I'm curious as to how the dynamics and interactions of the duets might change, considering that he's singing with his daughter.) - -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | - -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Oct 2002 12:16:59 -0500 From: "Nadyne Mielke" Subject: re: new peter gabriel "Lenore" said: > anybody besides me think it's kind of hiliarious > that peter gabriel and shania twain have both just > put out albums with the same name? Maybe someone can confirm / deny this, but I'd heard rumour about two years ago that PG delayed the release of this album because its title had too much conflict with the two albums that I mention here. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 09:29:25 -0700 (PDT) From: kitty kat Subject: Re: Newbie On Wed, 9 Oct 2002, Greg Bossert wrote: > > (at least the soundtrack CD is somewhat on topic :). "What You Feel" is the one that sounds the most "wrong" to me, since there's no tap dancing, and the dialogue really was integral to the song. And I really think that "Under Your Spell" should be a "breakaway pop hit". Like those two bands, they mix rippling guitar textures (ranging from Robert Fripp to Robin Guthrie in sound), and hard-edged electronica to a melodic pop sensibility. The vocalist has a languorous, torch-singer quality to her vocals--shades of Goldfrapp? I'm enjoying it. More info can be found here: http://www.clairevoyant.com - --Craig Yahoo! Greg and other ectophiles--you might be interested to know that _Danseparc_ is now available on disc, paired with another great Martha and the Muffins (I think they were M+M at the time) _Mystery Walk_. How I wish "This is the Ice Age" would come out on CD. Believe it or not, one of the many high points for me at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month was catching a few minutes of MuchMusic and seeing the video for "Danseparc" which I haven't seen for about 15 years the one time I saw it on MTV. I actually screamed when it started! I have such fond memories of M+M playing the Channel in Boston back in the mid-80's and opening with "Danseparc." That was when they were a foursome with Jocelyn Lanois on bass (and several back-up band members) One of my all time favorite live shows. Michael C. n.p.
