I haven't written anything in a long time. I have so many new CD's to talk about I could probably type a novel. Nina Simone - Jazz Essentials This is going to reveal my intense devotion to Jeff Buckley, but I bought a Nina Simone compilation that had one of my favorite Jeff covers on it, "All That I Ask". She was definitely ahead of her time. Her music is angry, tender, and universally sorrowful. I imagine her version of "Strange Fruit" is the only one aside from Holiday's to leave a significant impression (or am I wrong?). It's very sparse and dark, and inclucdes everything from near whispers to mad howling. I reocnized a few of the other songs. I loved "Don't Explain", which has a similar errie softness to "Strange Fruit". "Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out" is, I'm guessing, an old blues standard. My favorites, though, are the two that Nina wrote herself. "Four Women" is one of the coolest, freakiest chants I've ever heard. She takes on the personalities of four very different and unusual opressed female characters. The rhythm is hypnotic and fascinating. "Images", an accepelo performance, is sooo beautiful. I could go to sleep to Nina's dark velvety vibrato (Jeff obviously loved that technique). Most of the songs are played by Simone at the piano (she can really fly on that keyboard) with a drummer and bassist as accompaniement. It's kind of like ethereal jazz, maybe.... Patty Griffin - Flaming Red I am way behind on this one. I just recently purchased Patty's second record. I've heard the melodies described as "standard", and I can see how her songwriting follows some predictable patterns in pop/rock/folk music, but I don't really care. This album is flaming really really red, and exploding in places too. "Wiggely Fingers" is now officially one of my favorites to thrash my head around to in the car (people look at me really weirdly). Patty's passionate voice keeps up with the blazing guitars. "Tony" has a melody that I've almost heard somewhere before, but it rocks so well. "Blue Sky" is beautiful with, again, a very groovable heavy rhythm. What's that other one I loved... oh yeah, "Change" is another funked up tune (the drummer and bassist on this album are so good). I remember a lot of people in the entry for this one of the ecto site said they didn't care for the title track because it was just noise. Yep, it's definitely noisy, trashy, jumpy and punky. I love it! What makes this album so fun is probably how powerful Patty's voice is when set to a hard rock atmosphere. I don't think many artists could go from folk melancholy to unbridled rock freak-out the way she did. Maybe, by the time everyone has heard her third record and it's old news, I'll get it. Ok, I will talk about the new MMOH record tomorrow........ I discovered her, as I'm sure a lot of people have, being fooled into thinking I was downloading a Kate Bush & Annie Lennox duet (even though I knew they hadn't worked together, I just had to make sure!!). It was 'When the Rain Came Down', and I fell in love with it instantly (still thinking I was hearing two artists)! Then I just downloaded a whole bunck of her songs. I really like 'Serenading Genius', 'Suicide Song', 'The First to Cry' and 'Tragic' as well as many others. So how many of you guys are out there? I wonder what Happy fans are like :oP Actually before I go, does anyone here know where I can obtain chords/sheet music for any of Happy's songs? I'd really like to try 'The First to Cry' on my guitar, but I'm only a basic/amateur player :o) Thanks guys, look forward to hearing from you all. noodle :o)

The next thing for you to do is go to Happy's official site, and order some CDs. I would recommend _The Keep_ and _RhodeSongs_, since they are compilations that will give you a good taste of most all of her music (except her most recent album, _Many Worlds Are Born Tonight_, which is where "Serenading Genius" and "Tragic" came from). Then you can decide which albums to get from there. Ultimately, of course, you will end up with them all. Resistance is futile. ;) If for some reason either of those compilations aren't available on her site at this time, e-mail me your address and I'll send them to you. I've got a box of Happy stuff that I'm supposed to hand out to interested folk anyway. >So how many of you guys are out there? I wonder what Happy fans are like At last count, there are over 430 people subscribed to ecto. We can't know how many more are reading via the fa.music.ecto feed. We're a fun lot, if I do say so myself. :) You'll find we listen to a wide range of music, so don't be disappointed if you see much less Happy talk here than talk of other, newer artists. (We always welcome a kick in the pants to get a Happy thread started, though.) We watch cool, challenging movies and read cool, challenging books. A bunch of us are fans of _Buffy The Vampire Slayer_, and I apologize in advance for the inevitable periods when we're going to go nutty and post a flurry of stuff having to do with the show (at least the soundtrack CD is somewhat on topic :). Also, don't be surprised if the occasional post comes through from one of the artists we talk about here. It's always fun to go to CD Baby and order a disc by an ectophile. >Actually before I go, does anyone here know where I can obtain >chords/sheet music for any of Happy's songs? I'd really like to try 'The >First to Cry' on my guitar, but I'm only a basic/amateur player :o) That's a new one ... I know Happy hasn't published anything herself, but I don't know if anyone out there has worked out any guitar tabs on their own. I am the head of a student club at Willamette University in Salem Oregon, and we are trying to get some cooler artists to come visit the campus. I was wondering if anybody had some ideas as to how to do this, who to invite, or how much this is likely to cost. Financing is an issue. But anyhow, I thought I'd see if anybody had any ideas on putting something together. To get an idea as to who's available and how much it'll cost you: http://www.clearchannelcollegeentertainment.com/SearchResults.asp?Artist=%25 Clear Channel is evil, but they represent a lot of artists that would be welcome on a college campus. At the very least, that site will give you an idea of what kind of costs you're looking at. Make a list of artists you would want to have (aside from the ones *you* want to have, poll your peers to see who *they* want to have). Then go to their official web sites -- booking contact information should be there. Check their tour schedule, and see if they're going to be in your area around the date(s) you're trying to fill. Then send an email or give a phone call to their booking agent. Have your budget in hand before you do this, so you know what is workable and what isn't. Start off with a lower price than you think you'll actually get, but know in your head what your maximum is, so you know what you're doing while you negotiate. I know that once a year in the Northeast there is a big convention of college activities coordinators (I think it's called NECSA) -- see if there is a comparable event in the Pacific Northwest, and expend some of your budget to go to it. Lots of artists looking for college gigs showcase at these things, and their booking agents are usually with them so deals can sometimes be worked out on the spot. (Plus, I've heard from a friend who used to be Student Activities Coordinator at the University of New Haven that the partying at NECSA was like nothing else she'd ever experienced. ) Good luck! ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Rachael Sage, Sunday, 10/6 at 4 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2002 15:11:10 -0400 (EDT) From: jason and jill Subject: Re: S/T album -- "Comet"? Some of the people on the list have home made CDR copies that probably all work their way back from the same source--a bootleg/leaked copy that, in some tracks, sounds like a before-final mix. A really, really great record--I heard them play in Philly so many times live before being given a copy that I forgot these were songs that hadn't been released.
