I always thought that S/T was ahead of their time by a couple years. When was it that Ben Folds Five hit it big.... 97? something like that.. I consider Beth Sorrentino to be every bit as talented as the "piano jammin singer/songwriter" as Ben Folds is, and writes just as catchy tunes as he does. He just came along at the "right time" and by then they weren't recording any more albums. *sigh* I met Beth briefly after a show they did in Chicago in 95. She was a really cool person to talk to, and would have loved to pick her brain a little longer over music (we discovered that we both were huge Carole King fans). - -Amy (who saw Aimee Mann put on a spectacular show at the Boston Orpheum tonight... absolutely brilliant...3 encores!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 09:28:17 -0400 (EDT) From: jason and jill Subject: Re: Suddenly, Tammy! S/T album) Hi, Amy mentioned: >(who saw Aimee Mann put on a spectacular show at the Boston Orpheum >tonight... absolutely brilliant...3 encores!) woj, JeffW and I saw her show at the Calvin Theater in Northampton on Wednesday (from front row center, no less -- thank you again, Jeff! :). It was indeed a great show. She and the band rocked, and she clearly was having a wonderful time. Aside from the expected bunch of songs from _Lost In Space_ (which has very quickly grown on me, and now I can't take it out of the changer in the car), she did a nice mix of songs from her previous albums. Plus, in one of the encores the band even pulled off a largely improvised version of "Voices Carry", in response to her own initial reaction of revulsion when someone shouted out a request for it. ("Fine. You want me to play it? We're gonna fuckin' play it!") Juliana Hatfield opened -- stunningly, it was the first time woj and I have ever seen her play. And after seeing her once, I don't feel an overwhelming need to see her again. She said about three words to the audience, and spent her set staring at her left hand on the frets of her guitar, acting like she'd rather be anywhere else but there. (Is this how she usually is on stage?) All of her songs ended up sounding pretty much the same, too. I must admit I've never been a huge fan anyway, but if she had put on a more inspired performance I'm sure I would have enjoyed it. Even so, as openers go we could have been subjected to *much* worse. (Speaking of which, what unspeakable horror is opening for Tori this time? ) Aimee did mention that she was on _The West Wing_ even as she was singing to us that night -- we don't watch the show, but if I'd known ahead of time I would have had TiVo grab it. Did anyone see it -- what was her involvement in the episode? (Did she ask anyone for ligonberry pancakes? ;) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Rachael Sage, Sunday, 10/6 at 4 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 09:59:54 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Suddenly, Tammy! They had a snippet of her singing and a bit of Barenaked Ladies doing "One Week", but most of it was buried behind dialogue. Still, it was good seeing her on the show. - -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 14:04:41 -0400 From: "Dave Williamson" Subject: Aimee Mann - Orpheum Boston Last night felt like a very special night - this was an awesome show. Very tight and clean band with her, and she seemed honored and humbled to be on the stage "where she had gone to many shows years before" and on which she hadn't been in 17 years (with 'Til Tuesday). She even resurrected a version of Voices Carry in the 2nd (of 3) encores. Lots of tunes from Lost in Space, good sampling from Bachelor and Whatever, couple from I'm with Stupid. All in all I walked out the door feeling I'd just witnessed something very special, and have a much increased appreciation for Aimee and her songs. Sitting in the second row sure didn't hurt either. Don't know if the rest of the stops on this tour have/will be this good, but I wouldn't pass up the chance. Juliana Hatfield opened solo - I have much preferred seeing her with a band. A good set, but it felt a little awkward. Cheers, Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 16:23:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: RollingStone.com - Gabriel Tweaks Tour > Subject: RollingStone.com - Gabriel Tweaks Tour > Date: Sat, 5 Oct 2002 19:18:47 -0400 > > RollingStone.com: News: Gabriel Tweaks Tour > > > Due to complicated staging logistics, Peter Gabriel has delayed and rerouted > his Growing Up Live Tour.
