It reminds me very much of Lisa Gerrard's Mirror Pool. (In fact, she acknowledges Gerrard and Liz Fraser as influences). Her extensive liner notes are very intelligent, too. They have the feel of musical anthropology combined with a layperson's enthusiaum over a subject. She views her cd as introducing folks to medieval music, and does so in a non-condescending way. http://www.vasmusic.com - --Craig New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo! http://sbc.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 12:04:54 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Kirsty MacColl and Joy Askew I can't seem to bring flowery descriptions to my brain at the moment, but I just wanted to mention how much I am currently enjoying the late Kirsty MacColl's "Tropical Brainstorm" (which I just received yesterday) and Joy Askew's "Echo." Both artists are at their peaks with these two cds! Releasing her debut solo album 'Out Of Season' on October 28th, Beth will be taking the album on the road and then continue work on the next Portishead album, due 2003. The album is largely semi-acoustic and deeply moving. Lead track 'Mysteries' will promote the release but not be available in the shops. Also, there are a couple of mp3s from Beth's new CD at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/portisheadfans/files - -j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 14:09:19 EDT From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: delmani dilbero (bulgarian women's choir) Strange question, but would anyone be able to help me figure out why or how I know the song Delmani, Dilbero (or Dyulmani, Dyulbero)? It's a traditional bulgarian folk song that seems to have only been recorded by Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgare (or the Bulgarian Women's Choir). I heard it in the background of one of the Ghibli anime movies I was watching and instantly found it familiar, and thought that it was either a Muszikas/Marta Sebestyen song or a Varttina song, but scouring the net for samples turned up nothing. Then I muddled through the all Japanese end credits of the movie, and saw "Delmani, Dilbero" listed at the very end, so I looked that up and voila, a perfect fit. But I still can't figure out from whence I already knew the song. Does anyone know if it was previously used in a movie or tv show or a commercial? Google ain't helping. thanks, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 11:22:57 -0700 From: "Kira Barnes" Subject: RE: delmani dilbero (bulgarian women's choir) Paul asks: >Strange question, but would anyone be able to help me figure out why or how I >know the song Delmani, Dilbero (or Dyulmani, Dyulbero)? "Dilmano, Dilbero" appears on a Pennywhistlers album as well. I believe that came out in the late 1960's. I grew up listening to it. Don't know if that helps! A search on "dilmano dilbero" shows that there actually have been several more recordings, most notably by Charming Hostess. According to various Google hits, it's one of the best known songs of the area. - -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: 03 Oct 2002 22:19:15 +0200 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: Re: delmani dilbero (bulgarian women's choir) [Paul2k@aol.com]: > > Strange question, but would anyone be able to help me figure out > why or how I know the song Delmani, Dilbero (or Dyulmani, > Dyulbero)? I'm trying to locate Harriette, the woman I sent the "Brown Earth" sheet music to. She wrote me at my hotmail account and asked a question, which I replied to, but my message came back. So, Harriette, if you see this post, please write me here so I can write back and answer your question. Now for some ecto content... I located Shivaree's new album, Rough Dreams, at ABSound for $15 US. It's listed as special order, so I'll cross my fingers and hope they can get it in soon. ... Sigur Rss has a new album out this month... Nicola Conte supposedly released a new album on Tuesday, but, similar to Rough Dreams, I don't see it anywhere. I guess it doesn't really matter though. I pretty much just listen to the Frou Frou album over and over and over again. And again. And again.
