All the discussion of Vienna Teng lately intrigued me enough to go and download the mp3's of "Between" and "Gravity" from her website; after only a couple of listens, I've already found her voice and lyrics getting stuck in my head. For music of this quality, this is a Very Good Thing. Now I see she has a Portland show scheduled for Oct. 12, and I'm one happy ectophile -- I'll admit it, the reactions to her recent shows on the east coast had me a bit envious. Since I'm holding off on buying _Waking Hour_ until the new CD is released, it'll be cool to hear the majority of her songs for the first time live in a small venue -- and hopefully at least get a chance to say hello. :) John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 22:03:55 -0400 From: Dan_Stark Subject: Re: slean/gryner/naess I was also at the Northampton show, and I think I can understand why Meredith came away so disappointed with Sarah. For whatever reason - small crowd, early starting time, mixed audience, short set - Sarah's performance did seem a little uninspired. Her setlist was predictably made up of several songs from the new album, and of course those are the cabaret-style songs Meredith, and some others I know, are critical of. I think Meredith was hoping for Sarah to redeem herself on the heels of an album she doesn't care for very much, so it's too bad she saw this particular performance. Leif and I went to The Point in Bryn Mawr the following night, which was a far better show - more fun, better crowd, nicer venue with better sound, longer set, and more depth to the song list. On both nights, Sarah played a new song called California, which I really liked. It's reminiscent of Last Year's War (the best song Sarah never released) and if it's any indication of where the next album is headed, I think it may win back some of those who are on the fence about Sarah these days. Emm did put in a strong performance in Northampton. She was in great voice and seemed to wake up the subdued crowd with her punch of pop energy. This was the second time for me seeing Leona Naess in recent weeks. The first time was at Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ, where she appeared to be fairly intoxicated. She seemed more grounded in Northampton - too bad though, since it diminished the entertainment factor as far as I was concerned. Let's see, Leona doesn't seem much better at playing a guitar than she is at tuning one, her voice sounds kind of scratchy and I don't find her songs all that enthralling - so that leaves her impromptu (and possibly unintentional) humor between songs the best part of her show to me. She is funny in that respect, though. I've never heard anyone refer to Steve Poltz as boring. Our group stayed for his set, which really ended up being the night's highlight. I guess he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think he's a very funny and engaging performer. He had terrific interaction with not only the audience, but also with Leona and her guitar tech who were watching in the wings, and he was ultimately able to get the crowd on its feet for a number of audience participation antics by the end of the night. Funny how we came away with such different opinions of the same show, but there you have it. :) Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 21:49:40 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: Jenn Adams News Some news from Jenn Adams, who I know has some fans here. Many adjectives come to mind when thinking of a Steve Poltz performance, but "boring" is just not one of them. ;-) Steve is one of the few performers I've ever seen who can get the audience to laugh, cry, and sing along all in one 30-minute set. If more so-called "folk" singers had the passion, sincerity and humor that Steve projects to his audience, there would be more packed coffee houses from coast to coast -- and maybe a few auditoriums as well... - -- - -- | Greg Dunn | The reason they call television | | gregdunn@indy.net | a "medium" is that it's neither | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | rare, nor well done. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | - Ernie Kovacs | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 01:13:42 EDT From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: sylvie lewis in NY and MA Ar. If only I had checked her website earlier. Then I could have told you that my friend Sylvie Lewis was playing in the New England area the past two weeks. But if anyone is interested in catching this talented singer-songwriter, she'll be playing at the Bitter End in NYC on Wednesday, October 2nd (8:30 PM) and at Fire and Ice in Northampton, MA on Thursday (9:00 PM). She'll be doing a Pacific Coast tour during October. oh, and, my sister is the best sister in the world. she got me the Studio Ghibli DVD boxset for my birthday.
