I'm rather surprised not to have seen any responses to this yet. I picked up a couple of copies of the cd on tuesday (one for my sister-in-law for her birthday; she's a gabriel fan but has been too busy with her 4 month old baby to be aware of the new release. she was pleasantly surprised by the gift) but due to a dinner guest on tuesday (Hi, Craig), over in part to watch the season premier of Buffy (delightful! Dawn with her own variant of Mr. Pointy! Looking forward to next week's episode of _Buffy the Guidance Counselor_), I was unable to actually listen to _Up_ until yesterday. Okay. Enough, rambling. As I said, I went through _Up_ a couple of times yesterday. It will take several more listens to really sink in, to get a handle on the rolling grooves, the dark, almost industrial and crunchy sounds, the deeper and richer yet unmistakable timbre of Gabriel's voice. That said, the album seems as good as I'd hoped after hearing this spring's _The Long Walk Home_, the soundtrack to _The Rabbit-Proof Fence_. In fact, the second track on _Up_ is a different version of one of my favorite tracks on _The Long Walk Home_, "Blue Sky," a largely identical track though now with lyrics layered over the top (an experience not unlike hearing the evolution of Happy's "Ra is a Busy God"). Putting on the album is a jarring experience for the unprepared, as it starts with quiet sounds suddenly interrupted with the previously mentioned noisy bits in the song "Darkness." In fact a perfect lead-in track, as the whole album has much about it that is quite dark, not only in the instrumentation but in the lyrics and even the packaging which is almost devoid of color. Was it worth the 9+ year wait since _Us_? For me, I'd have to say yes. The album is more experiemental and less straightfoward than _Us_, one of my least-frequently listened-to Gabriel albums and listening to it excites me tremendously. jeff n.p. _This Way_, Jewel (have I mentioned recently how much I love this album? Of her three primary releases, it best captures her power and charisma. her song-writing has improved, and listening to her let loose with that incredible voice on sonds like "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" can give me shiver. It's held up remarkably well since its release and I play it all the time...) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 11:09:13 -0500 From: "JS News" Subject: October Project and Karnataka "unplugged" in NYC For any interested souls in NYC.... My colleagues and I will however arrive in New York on October 11th to combine the hard work ahead with a little vacation, and so we intend to stay in NYC for a couple of days, go down to Washington DC, do all those great museums, rent a car and drive down to Florida. nothing is written in stone, we'll follow our instincts wrt how much time we will spend each place. I've been trying to keep a lookout for interesting concerts happening at that time, but so far I have pulled a blank. any and all hints are most welcome! :-) np: Alisha -- Made in India (light and pleasant indipop) - -- Kjetil T. ==. ,,==. ,,==. ,,==. ,,==. ,,== ::://:::://:::://:::://:::://:::: =='' `=='' `=='' `=='' `=='' `== http://folding.stanford.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 13:10:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Cool Bjork interview http://www.scatterheart.com/filter.html For anyone interested.
