I'm not so sure. You should have seen the Mazzy Star show I went to. ALL of the lights in the house were turned off, and the concert was played to the light of, say, six candles on the stage. Quite dark. I stood there with my eyes closed 'cause there was nothing to see. I could've done that at home with the CD and some nice headphones and been laying down in a smoke-free environment too. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 08:43:59 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Zazie There has been some discussion of Zazie here on the list before (if you're going through the archives try 3/29/98, 3/31/98, 12/28/99, 2/28/01, 3/1/01). Kiri pointed out that she sang the song "Rose" for the 1997 movie *Ma Vie en Rose* (see < http://us.imdb.com/Soundtracks?0119590 >). I share Karen's low opinion of *Je, Tu, Ils* but prefer *Zen* to the later work. Too pop for some, but I quite like it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 18:08:20 -0500 (CDT) From: Cheri Villines Subject: Alice Peacock, Garrison Starr Hey folks :) Here are a couple of cds that I have been listening to over and over again: Alice Peacock - self titled - from Aware Records/Columbia 2002 - Love this cd, a gift from my best friend! Alice has a very engaging voice and style. Her lower range is pleasantly throaty while her upper range is very clear, almost crystalline, and she is intimately connected to what she is singing. The music seems to draw from various influences, which keeps it interesting for me, without being schizo. :) Guest appearances on the cd include, but is not limited to, Charley Drayton, Emily Saliers, Kristen Hall, John Gorka, John Mayer, and Cheryl Wilson. The lyrics and her voice are what draw me to this cd. I could do with a little less of the "band." I heard a copy of "Real Day", her first cd, and *loved* the pared down sound of it. Her voice really shines in that setting. Will be looking for my own copy of that soon. :) Garrison Starr - Songs from Take-off to Landing - BackPorch Records 2002 - I saw Garrison live a few years ago when she opened for Cracker. I am not sure, but I think members of Wilco may have been backing her up. I was very impressed with her but somehow kept forgetting to pick up a cd. Finally picked this one up and now I am sorry I didn't start sooner. I like it for some of the same reasons I like Alice's cd - intelligent, personal lyrics and interesting voice. She has a very sweet voice, but not sweet like sugar, more like a clean breeze after a good rain. I like the production as well; the music doesn't threaten to drown her voice, but supports it. Guest appearances on backing vocals include Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Neilson Hubbard. be well, Cheri ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 19:41:32 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: If you're thinking about going to see Christine Collister and aren't sure... Wonder how many of the songs have been re-recorded for the new one. The opening tracks have been switched around by the look of the Virt tracklisting. Maybe you can pre-order the new version of Waking Hour, due 5 Nov, but Virt's order form doesn't work for me (http://www.virtrecords.com/Order/order.mv). 'Outside US' (supplied on their drop-down menu) comes back as invalid. I just wanted to see what the shipping costs are, not actually put through the order. Ah well, suckiness in life abounds. The album cover is striking. I didn't check out Virt's other two artists. Of the new recordings of 'gravity' and 'between' available as mp3s on viennateng.com, they're more filled out. Having drums leap in on 'gravity' takes some getting used to! The cello (?) rumbles along like it was always there, yey low grumbly instruments. I like songs where the strings are distinguishable, like in chamber music, rather than a sugary orchestral backdrop. The song will be 'immediate' to new listeners. Okay, I've played it 6 times now. The (third?) 'between' has atmospheric beepy noises in the background and maybe different drums; I haven't my copy of Waking Hour here to compare. The vocals are strong, Vienna enunciates beautifully as well as singing so well! Karen (np Charlotte Martin mp3s, which I really really like, melodic twisted songs with piano and loud guitars, but her flash heavy site takes several minutes to do nothing, so I'm not returning. Idiot web-designers). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 21:15:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: Salon.com: Old men take longer The title might lead you to think it's an article about Viagra, but it's really about Peter Gabriel's new album! :-) - -Neb > Subject: Salon.com Arts & Entertainment: Old men take longer > Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 00:57:50 -0400 > > > > > ===== _________________________________________________________________ New DSL Internet Access from SBC & Yahoo! http://sbc.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 05:04:45 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Sarah Jones Hola, There is a nice article on Norah Jones in the lastest _Dallas Observer_. http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/2002-09-19/music.html/1/index.html It reenforces my opinion that she is a decent person who isn't fond of the star-making machinery surrounding her. While you're there, you might as well read about Polyphonic Spree. They have been getting good write-ups in the New Music Express. Seems the Brits love them. I do to. I picked up their album a while back, and, aside from the painful electronic noodling on the last track, it is a lovely album with massed choir and brass banging away at warm songs in a Phil Spector/Brian Wilson way. Bye, Lyle n.r. _Clans of the Alphane Moon_, PK Dick - Now I think I'm schizophrenic. But which clan do I belong to? And I learned who Harry Stack Sullivan is. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 22:21:39 -0700 From: "William Mazur" Subject: RE: Vienna Teng Houseconcert at my house in Boston 9/28/2002 4pm :-) You got it Jeff!
