Sort of non-ecto, but I saw Robert Plant at the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City (probably only familiar to Vickie) a week ago. As a former Led Hed who never got to see them, I figured it was a fine chance to get within shouting distance of the man. Didn't know whether to expect a washed-up rock star with ragged pipes dishing out the good-old-days in true Vegas style or not. I got NOT! The set began with a dreamy, hazy, middle-eastern (big surprise), bluesy sounding thing from his new album, Dreamland. I forget the exact title, but it's something about waiting for a ticket on a train, subtitled "If I Ever Get Lucky". It would be difficult to describe it accurately without using words like sexy, lusty, pulsating...well, you get the drift. The surprise for me was an unexpected cover of "Four Sticks", an interesting, but not necessarily powerful song. The live version with this band was true enough to the original, but took it to a level I wouldn't have expected. It became a wonderfully driving homage to Bonham. "Goin' To California" and "Hey, Hey, What Can I Do?" made up the acoustic set. If I had any doubts about this man's ability to reach the notes he once did, they were erased on the final encore of "Whole Lotta Love". Not my favorite song ever, but he did it right. His vocals were richer, stronger, and more widely ranging than anything I've heard during his entire career. Seeing him in a relatively small theatre was lovely. A note about his opening band. I generally dislike opening acts, but I did an about-face on this one. I believe they are from upstate NY (I hear they have some good musicians there...:). They are called "moe." Check out their website at www.moe.org. One second I was hearing references to Gabriel-era Genesis, the next I was hearing Bela Fleck. A goodly amount of complex time signatures, which I like. Not too much, though. At one point, they evoked "A Day At The Dog Races" by Little Feat from Time Loves A Hero. That is all from my brutally music-deprived expanse of prairie here in the midwest. Well, not quite all. Just gotta say it. At this point in my life, I despise all forms of chain mail. Doesn't matter what the topic is. I find it generally insulting that someone thinks so little of my powers of thought that I cannot manage to form an opinion or have strong thoughts about a subject without being guided (quite often with a very heavy hand); that I cannot possibly be moved by a subject without the benefit of reading (about a thousand times) how another feels about it. I mean no disrespect to Kristen, whose intentions were good, but I'm going to join the rest in saying that ecto has been a largely spam-free area, mostly through the vigilence of its members. Discussions of non-music topics arise often, but at least we do it in our own words. Back to lurking, Lisa n.r. Nine Lives by Lynn Snowden (brain candy) n.p. Repent now! Morrissey was quite entertaining on _The Late Late Show_ last night. The guy sings wonderfully and didn't go flat on any high notes. The chord changes were pretty snaky on the song. Not like the three chord stuff most people do nowadays. Too bad Craig Kilbourne didn't ask him any interesting questions. Repent now! sorry - AFAIK later calculations showed that asteroid is going to sail by at a safe distance. Of course, there is always some room for error, but personally I have this strong feeling the world is not going to end anytime soon. That would be far too easy, and too promising in its own way, since an end implies a new beginning... but no, we're going to plod on and on, getting just a bit worse each day... depressed now... - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed." -- Eduardo Galeano - -- 12:09pm up 64 days, 54 min, 4 users, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.04-- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 13:32:13 +1000 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: Save Farscape campaign Hey folks, Once more on Farscape then I'll stop. There's a huge movement to save the show from cancellation - online petitions, mail (snail & email) campaigns, media coverage (CNN Headline News has become quite interested in the story) and even rallies. It's been amazing to see how quickly and fervently the fan community worldwide has rallied to the cause. All Farscape fans should at least sign the petition - check out the URL below for all the campaign info - petition links, news as it develops, and other stuff you can do to help. And pass the word! Personally, I was surprised at how upset I got when I heard the show was cancelled - I guess I didn't realise how much it means to me. Now I just want to keep seeing what happens next. Here's hoping we get a chance to see Season 5... - -sherlyn - -- Sherlyn Koo | sherlyn@pixelopolis.com | Sydney, Australia "...claims to be a human, from a planet called Erp..."
