Fans of "Breaking the Waves" might remember her as the sister, while she was also in Mike Leigh's "Career Girls" and "Naked", as well as a tiny role in "Topsy Turvy". I saw her in "No Man's Land" earlier this year, and apparently she also turns up in "Searching for Debra Winger". I wasn't as much of a fan as some, but you had to respect her choices and by all accounts she was a blinding stage actress, as well. It's a great loss to film and theatre, and I'm sure she had much, much more to offer. adam k. I almost watched Claire Dolan AND Hotel Splendide within the last 2 weeks and passed them up for other things. I wish I'd watched them now. "Searching for Debra Winger" hasn't opened yet (at least, not in the States). I wonder if they'll add a bit in announcing her death. I hope so, at least something in the ending credits. Here's her full IMDB listing: "Crime and Punishment" (2002/I) (mini) TV Series Searching for Debra Winger (2002) From Hell (2001) No Man's Land (2001) "Sword of Honour" (2001) (mini) TV Series 4 Weight of Water, The (2000) Hotel Splendide (2000) Cinderella (2000/I) (TV) Varya (1999) Topsy-Turvy (1999) Lost Son, The (1999) Claire Dolan (1998) Hi-Life (1998) Saint-Ex (1997) Tranceformer - A Portrait of Lars von Trier (1997) Career Girls (1997) Breaking the Waves (1996) Nightlife (1996) (TV) Merisairas (1996) 3 Steps to Heaven (1995) (TV) Before the Rain (1994) Look Me in the Eye (1994) Nobody's Children (1994) (TV) Naked (1993) Eat the Rich (1987) Sacred Hearts (1985) "Brookside" (1982) TV Series __________________________________________________ Yahoo! - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember.yahoo.com/tribute ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 07:24:41 -0700 (PDT) From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: movies, - --- AzeemAK@aol.com wrote: > Jack Nicholson? Broadcast News? Terms of Endearment? Blood and Wine? Those are all pretty good movies. (And I must admit I have a real soft spot for Mars Attacks! I have a lot of fun watching it. Just seeing the Martian's heads explode to the sounds of Slim Whitman is frickin' hilarious to me.) > With The Pledge, he seemed to find a tough director > who wouldn't let him get away with his usual shtick, > and was very good. This I agree with 100%! It still makes me angry to think that he won an Oscar for the phoned-in (IMHO) As Good As It Gets performance, but wasn't even nominated for The Pledge (Sean Penn should have been nominated too). I'm usually not one to bash the Academy (too much) because I'm an Oscar slut, but they do piss me off every now and then (Bjork not nominated for Best Actress? ARGH!) and that's one I'll always shake my head over. > Makes me think I ought to see The Crossing Guard, > his other Sean Penn collaboration. Same here, I jsut haven't gotten around to it. Mulholland Drive(released here > now), Monster's ball, Man without a memory(finnish > film), Gosford park Very good movies (especially Mulholland Drive), but I'm not familiar with Man Without A Memory. What's it about? __________________________________________________ Yahoo! - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember.yahoo.com/tribute ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 20:11:04 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: Katrin Cartlidge (Re: a passing -- off topic In a message dated 10/09/2002 15:02:49 GMT Daylight Time, xenussister@yahoo.com writes: << I agree, it's a sad thing. After Charlotte Coleman's tragic death from asthma last year, that's two great English character actresses gone far too young. Very sad. Azeem in London PS: I did see Hotel Splendide, by the way. It's seriously flawed, but still worth seeing, for some great sets, great work from the wonderful Toni Colette and Stephen Tompkinson (as well as our KC of course), and a very original and downright whacky plot. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 20:32:46 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Re: movies, In a message dated 10/09/2002 15:29:15 GMT Daylight Time, xenussister@yahoo.com writes: << I agree he's had his share of stinkers, but did you see Reds? He was fun in Broadcast News, but it was only a cameo wasn't it? He was OK in Prizzi's Honour, but that was Angelica Huston's film. And I agree about As Good As It Gets - that was joint winner of the coveted Most Meretricious Film of the Year award (along with Good Will Hunting) - his performance was pure ham, and the "outrageousness" of his character was fake and compromised - that bit towards the end when he says "You make me want to be a better man" evokes the words of Frances McDormand in Fargo: "Ah think ah'm gonna barf!"
