This *really* pisses me off. There is a small window of hope that if enough mail reaches SciFi about this, they could reconsider. They recently went to a paid format, so only paid subscribers can listen to my stream now (or, at least until I become a paid broadcaster, that is...) I see the listener's fee is $4.95 a month. I suppose it could well be worth it, since many of the stations are actually pretty enjoyable. As for my station, it includes many of the bands listed in the recent Ecto-Electro discussions (Mandalay, Portishead, Everything But the Girl...) , as well as many others not listed (hey, like my band, Lovespirals!). Some of it could be a tad harder or dancier, but I really prefer mellow, romantic styles of Electronica best. BTW, glad to see the discussion turn back around from TV to music! When I first heard "With No Caring" with those horns, I just about fell over. It is *so* unexpected, and yet *so* wonderful ... it's a complete reinterpretation of the song, and I think I might even like it better than the original. >And "Precious Heart," one of my favorite songs ever, I find fairly >unrecognizable here. This is something she does live very often. Usually there is no pause for applause like there is on the album -- I wish she had clipped out the applause, and just had the one go right into the other. When I have seen her do those two songs back to back, the immediate juxtaposition knocks everyone back on their heels, and it's a beautiful thing. It's a wonderfully aggressive version of "Killzone!", too. :) > I've never seen Veda live in concert, but _Auditorium_ certainly makes > me want to. "Please don't sue me." Hee! I'm hoping to slip that track into the between-set music at the Eli Whitney Folk Festival next weekend. >"Instructions" is redone on the theme of campground rules. Actually, she is quoting (mostly) verbatim the official rules of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which commissioned the entire song cycle for their 25th annual festival this summer. woj and I got to go to it in 1999, and it was a great weekend. "Bedlam" would fit on _Spine_ or _YDNLITWA_. Yes ... she is quoting herself as well as many other traditions. In the liner notes she says she was trying to evoke the musical traditions of the world as much as she could in the limited time she had. I'm not sure if everything she was trying to do comes 100% clear, but it's still a beautiful piece of work. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Sep 2002 20:07:36 -0400 From: "Sherlyn Koo" Subject: New Coldplay - comments? It's a really solid followup to _Parachutes_, that in many ways surpasses that album. This time around, the band has branched out a bit from the mostly mellow sound of the first album. While there are still a lot of tracks that wouldn't sound out of place on _Parachutes_ (and that's not a bad thing by any means), _A Rush of Blood to the Head_ is more sonically adventurous and varied in tone. MTV2 showed a Coldplay concert shortly before the new album was released. While they performed all the "hits" from _Parachutes_, it was songs from the new album like "God Put a Smile on Your Face," "Politik," and "Daylight" that really stood out. They all take the band's signature sound to new areas, adding more rhythmic experimentation and instrumentation. Hopefully, _ A Rush of Blood_ will help the band establish a name for themselves apart from all of the Jeff Buckley and Radiohead-lite comparisons. Stuart, Thanks for the review. Your review is very similar to what a good friend told me about the CD. He's the one that turned me onto Coldplay in the first place (right after Parachutes was released). I personally haven't heard the new CD yet. Some reviewers have criticized the CD as being *too* similar to Parachutes. They say that they played it safe and weren't adventurous enough. What's your take on that criticism? I loved Parachutes, especially the mellower side of the CD. So I'm sure that I will like this new CD. I'm not one that believes that a band needs to take a huge leap forward on every CD they release. If they stay in the same mode release after release they can become stale. There needs to be some progress. It just doesn't necessarily need to be drastic with each new release. A good example of where some folks here feel that a drastic change in style didn't work was with Sarah Slean. BTW, the Duncan Sheik CD has received some very positive reviews. They said that it has a good mix of his first CD, from a pop perspective, and his last CD which went more into a Nick Drake sort of mood. Has anyone else here on Ecto heard Duncan's CD and want to post a review? Thanks! Bill M. n.p.
