I was a bit surprised to hear of the remake of "Solaris". As a sysadmin, I felt almost obliged to see a showing of "Solaris" at the university where I work; my semi-joking review was "It's huge, it's slow, it's nearly incomprehensible", poking fun at the common features of the movie and the operating system. Although the movie was strangely compelling, if you could stand the excruciatingly slow pace, and surprisingly faithful to the Stanislaw Lem novel. Later I picked up the book and found it more enjoyable to read than I thought it was going to be, although _The Cyberiad_ was still more fun (note to self -- must someday name a pair of computers "Trurl" and "Klapaucius"). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Sep 2002 23:58:37 -0700 (PDT) From: music@allison.net Subject: September Concert needs volunteers Hey everyone, As some of you may know, on September 11, many musicians will be participatin in the first annual September Concert. It is an all volunteer effort to bring New Yorkers together on September 11 through the spirit of music. You can read more about it at http://septemberconcert.org. A number of performers discussed on this list are involved. In any case, I hope it will not be considered inappropriate for me to post to this list in search of volunteers to help out with this effort. I am sending this email on behalf of Haruko Smith, the woman who conceived this amazing idea. We are in desperate need of volunteers who can help out in an organizational capacity: helping to coordinate musicians and venues, helping to flier so that New Yorkers understand what is happening, people who can make copies of fliers (access to color copiers), volunteer sound technicians, volunteer photographers, videographers, etc. A help wanted list is poted here: (http://septemberconcert.org/wanted.html) If you are anyone you know can help out, your efforts would be greatly appreciated. This is going to be an amazing way to bring people together and to celebrate the human spirit. Please email Haruko at contact@septemberconcert.org and put soemthing like "VOLUNTEERING TO HELP" in the subject line. Thank you so much!!!! For this performance, VoiceWAVE includes: Tom Bickley J. D. Buhl Brad Fischer Bob Marsh Matthew Priest Jesse Quattro Aurora Rising Katherine Setar Caroline Smith Joseph Zitt The performance will include the West Coast premiere of Joseph Zitt's score "feldMorph", as well as his "Tapas", which has also been performed by the Cornelius Cardew Choir and by other groups around the country. Both scores appear in Zitt's book "Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems" (http://www.josephzitt.com/books/smwb.php) "feldMorph" was composed as a tribute to the music of Morton Feldman, in an attempt to emulate his music through improvisational methods. "Tapas" creates a rapidly-changing set of improvisations by different subsets of the group. Joseph Zitt's vocal performance combines a background in traditional synagogue and world musics with a mastery of extended vocal techniques. While he often approaches performance non-verbally, focusing on the vocal sounds themselves rather than the meanings of words, he also includes moving and surprising uses of text in work that straddles the line between music and poetry. In his solo and ensemble performances and workshops, he works to create music that is both complex and clear, exemplifying the best that each person can bring to free and structured improvisation. He has performed in a wide variety of solo and ensemble contexts, including performing with the ensemble Comma in Pauline Oliveros's "Lunar Opera" at Lincoln Center in New York City, and with the ensemble Gray Code at the Knitting Factory in New York and at the 2001 Vision Festival in Washington, DC. His nationwide tour in January 2002 included a week in the Bay Area working on his scores with the Cornelius Cardew choir, which inspired his recent move to Berkeley. Since arriving, he has performed at the Luggage Store Gallery Company Nights, the TransBay Skronkathon, at the Artship Wave 9 release event at 21 Grand, and, in collaboration with Mapa Mundi, at the Berkeley Arts Center. His most recent recording is Artship CD 18, "rats, maybe ghosts". Morgan Guberman is also on the program, performing his "Exotic Zoology", a solo improvisation with a barrage of instrumentation. Morgan Guberman is a composer/performer/improviser of both instrumental and electronic solo and chamber music. His music has recieved radio play throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia, and Japan. His primary instruments are the contrabass, voice, piano, electronics, and various percussive devices, including found objects. Ahh, good to see you posting again, Greg! I've been on a similar electronica/trip-hop kick of late as well, so I'll rattle off some of the stuff I've found. First and foremost, my favorite discovery is a compilation called "She: A Female Trip-Hop Experience". It features Laika, Crustation, Kikiwest, Lamb, Mandalay, Lore, Hybrid (w/Julee Cruise), Zia, Bitstream Dream, Swandive, The Dreaming and The Starseeds. When I picked this up, the only band on it I knew was Lamb. Shortly after I got I was scrambling to pick up CDs from all of the artists. Sadly, I was only able to find CDs for about 1/2 the bands on it! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005A8AB/ Other singers/bands worth looking at: Paul Oakenfold's new CD (Bunkka) has a couple of great tracks featuring women. One features Nelly Furtado & Tricky, the other Emiliana Torrini. Speaking of Emiliana Torrini, she's very worth checking out. She's Italian-Icelandic, and if you like Bjork, you'd probably like Emiliana. Cirrus' CD Counterfeit is pretty standard dance/dj/electronica and it features female vocals on 1/2 of it or so... If you haven't heard Ekova, get yourself over to http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/artists/ekova/ and read up on 'em. Imogen Heap's new band FrouFrou might fall in this genre, depending on how you look at things... Halou is a bay-area band that's solidly in the genre. Pretty lamb-like. Just signed to Nettwerk. Very very tasty! If you like what you hear, their pre-Nettwerk CDs will be going out of print, so order them quickly from http://www.halou.com/ Hooverphonic's not new, but worth listening to... Priya Thomas was an unexpected discovery at NxNE this year. Posters promoting her show described her as a 'girl with a beatbox'. She's french-canadian, by way of south-asian parents, and some folks have compared her to early PJ Harvey. She's got a fairly trip-hop feel, but very aggressive. http://www.priyathomas.com/ Some other names to check out: Ruby, Supreme Beings Of Leisure - -j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Sep 2002 20:37:16 -0400 From: "Sherlyn Koo" Subject: Re: AIMEE, FUTURE BIBLE HEROES, BUFFY Hey all, Andrew said: >If anyone wants to use Kazaa, remember it's absolutely infested with >spyware. What I can't understand is why Nine even got involved with Farscape in the first place. Sure, it exported great, but they probably found it too racy to be screened uncut in the timeslots which count towards the local content quota (5pm-11pm I think, but I could be wrong on that). Plus they have absolutely no faith in the science fiction genre - isn't Enterprise on at 11.30pm? But anyway... Apparently Foxtel has taken over Nine's role in the production of the show and will be screening S2-3 on Fox8 sometime soon. They did already show S2 on FoxKids earlier this year... Back to music content (though not actually ecto itself) - can anybody recommend a good recording of the Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano? I have the Cziffra versions and really don't like them - the liberties he takes with tempo drive me nuts!
