This is very cool news indeed; the Faith episodes were among the first I saw of the show (after blowing off the first few seasons as an unnecessary retread of a so-so movie -- needless to say, I was completely wrong, and am enjoying the DVD sets quite a bit). I had no idea that it was even being discussed. Hey -- maybe Faith will show up to slay Britney's character! A fanboy can dream, anyway... ;) John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 12:27:36 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: Live At The House O'Muzak Returns! Hey Meth (and everyone else), Sounds like you got a great line-up. We've been trying hard to get Rachel Sage but she's not in the west very often--and usually flies when she goes to CA, skipping over NM and most of the west--ah well, one of these days. Say "Hi" to Annie for us--we had a great time hosting her and I think she's phenomenal. I've seen CHris and Merideth and Holly at Folk Alliances and like them all--Holly's sense of humor is wonderful--she really seems like a great person! Neal and I have lined up here in Albuquerque: September 24 - Tom Kimmel October 12 - Katy Moffatt November 10 - Lynn Miles (yay!) Suzanne Buirgy - May 10 2003 Joy Eden Harrison - August 2003 (planning way far out) We've got lots of other tentative dates beginning to fill in for next year but nothing else solid. We just had Ruthie Foster play here last week--she and Cyd were pheonmenal as always--their new album is fantastic--I think it really captures the excitement of their live shows. Bon Logaza would do an interesting show. I'm really looking forward to that show. I have talked to her a little bit a couple times, and I think your assessment is right. That should be a fun one, too. >November 10 - Lynn Miles (yay!) We got a call from her agent last week, asking if we would be able to host her next week, because an area show fell through. I said no because it would have been a Thursday night, and with next to no publicity time I really didn't think I could get people here. Plus, with the folk festival looming I never know when I'm going to have to go to a meeting. I felt kind of bad about that, but I had to be honest. I did refer him to a couple other places in the area, but I haven't heard whether she got booked anywhere. It was interesting, though -- he said she doesn't do house concerts (I think he thought we were a folk club when he called). You guys have hosted her before, haven't you? I almost said something about that, but decided against it... >We just had Ruthie Foster play here last week--she >and Cyd were pheonmenal as always--their new album >is fantastic--I think it really captures the >excitement of their live shows. Yay! I hope it works out that we can get her. Someone who runs a series up in the Boston area (Fox Run) is trying to get her, and referred her to us so she could better line up a bunch of shows. We're just waiting to hear back on whether the other dates they were trying to fill in are happening or not. If it does work out, we'll have her here in April. >Bon Logaza would do an interesting show. Definitely. He said something about "acoustic jazz ambient fusion". Sounds good to me! (And who knows, maybe he could convince a certain vocalist he's worked with to come too ... ah, but it's nice to dream. :) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 15:23:08 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: Live At The House O'Muzak Returns! No, we actually haven't had her play before--though we've set up tentative dates twice before--they've just always fallen through. Her booking agent now seems a bit more organized than her previous one, and seems to be a bit better getting her gig. He had just gotten her on as an opener for Dave Carter and Tracey Grammer's NM dates in November (they were going to play about 4 other dates here that month) the week Dave died. Not sure what is happening with those, but I'm pretty sure most of the venues cancelled the show. It would have been nice for a few to pick up Lynn as the main show, but I doubt any did that--she just doesn't seem well known enough in the States. (Such a shame too!) > >Bon Logaza would do an interesting show. > > Definitely. He said something about "acoustic jazz ambient > fusion". Sounds good to me! (And who knows, maybe he could convince a > certain vocalist he's worked with to come too ... ah, but it's nice to > dream. :) Yes, Bon and his occassional guest vocalist (or perhaps just his occassional guest vocalist) would always be welcome at our series. I guess ya never know, but I'm not holding my breath. This afternoon I've got the task with a friend of mine to pick up Joan Baez and band (including Richard Shindell and Rani Arbo) at their hotel and take them to the venue they're playing tonight. Probably. :/ The Dave & Tracy show at the Somerville Theater (Boston) in October, which Katryna & Nerissa Nields were supposed to open got cancelled. So the Nields hooked themselves and Tracy up with the Christine Lavin/Julie Gold show that was scheduled at the Sanders Theater (also Boston) on the same night, and now it's going to be an extravaganza. Unfortunately, I don't think that sort of thing is happening too many other places. >This afternoon I've got the task with a friend of mine >to pick up Joan Baez and band (including Richard Shindell >and Rani Arbo) at their hotel and take them to >the venue they're playing tonight. Should be fun. Wow, cool. I did see recently that Tracy Grammer is joining Joan Baez's band, but I don't know if that's happened already or if it's scheduled for later next month. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 12:48:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Re: VJ's On Fri, 30 Aug 2002 adamk@zoom.co.uk wrote: > Something that I meant to mention, on the subject of MTV > VJ's --- back then, when I first watched it, there was a VJ > called CJ (I think) -- a laid back, well-spoken black guy. J.J. Jackson. He was a long-time DJ when he was picked for the MTV job. The original five VJs were J.J., Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, and Mark Goodman. They had some really good VJs after that, like Kevin Seal and Matt Pinfield (of "120 Minutes"). I was young & impressionable when MTV came on the air, and almost immediately, all my fave artists were English, like Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, Roxy Music, etc. What I find really ironic about MTV is that when it came on originally, everyone was afraid it was going to destroy kids' attention spans, since the programming consisted exclusively of three-minute videos (no "Real World" or "Dis-Missed" back in those days, my friends!). But these days, people's attention spans are apparently SO short that sitting through an entire video would be torture. That's why, on the odd occasions when they DO show a video, the screen is covered with previews of what the next video will be, ads for upcoming shows, chat room comments, etc. When MTV had a VJ contest a few years ago and the screamingly annoying Jesse Camp won, I vowed that I would never again watch the channel. And I haven't, with the exception of "The Osbournes" (what can I say, my husband's a long-time Sabs fan). - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 13:04:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Linda Thompson Does anyone know Linda Thompson's UK tour dates? IF true, it would be the first bit of good news I've heard about the next season.. Because frankly I'm disappointed with the direction Buffy takes in season seven! You see, I must be one of the few people on the planet who LOVED season six.I thought it was amazingly brave, taking huge chances - a work of genius, flawed though it might be. But season seven appears to just give in to the commercial pressures, and what's so great about that? Happy, happy, what fun to slay the monsters! Blah. I can't help being disappointed.. I'm not terribly excited about recycling old characters, either. There's a talk of The Master coming back, and Glory - haven't we got rid of them already? I suppose that would apply to Faith as well, but I'm willing to make exception for her :) I don't know, I just think I liked Buffy better when it really went on the edge. OK, I promised some Ecto content. Hmm...there are some new releases Down Under that might be of interest. First of all, My Friend The Chocolate Cake released a new album, "Curious". No huge stylistic departures there - - it's just another MFTCC record, which is just fine by me! And at the more mainstream end of the scale, the New Zealander Bic Runga has a new album, "Beautiful Collision". I haven't heard it myself, but I read positive reviews in the street press. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed." -- Eduardo Galeano - -- 2:20pm up 50 days, 4:54, 5 users, load average: 0.01, 0.00, 0.08-- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #241 **************************
