A note from Marcy Levy aka Marcella Detroit: Hi! There are some things many of you may not know about me. And some things you never will, for that matter! However, one little bit of information I'd like to share with you is that growing up in Detroit, I developed a great appreciation for r&b (rhythm and blues) and just plain blues. I used to sneak out of my parents house at about midnight, take their car and drive to terribly dangerous parts of Detroit, underage, and go see the likes of John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. My favorite female singer is and will always be Aretha Franklin and she influenced my vocal style tremendously. I have the great privilege to sing the blues occasionally with a band here in the L.A. area and we're going to be appearing at the San Francisco Blues Festival on September 29th under the name of "The Chicago Blues Reunion". The nucleus of the band consists of Barry Goldberg, fanta stic keyboardist who co-penned the classic, "I've really got to use my imagination" recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips; Gary Mallaber, drummer extraordinaire who has played with Steve Miller, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison; and R. Zach Wagner, a great guitarist and singer. We will be joined also on stage, by Steve Miller, himself; blues greats, Charlie Musselwhite, Elvin Bishop, and Nick Gravenites; and Harvey Mandel, a great blues/rock guitarist. And oh, my God! I can't believe Otis Rush, the great blues guitarist/singer is playing that day as well. He is so amazing, so soulful. Eric Clapton was tremendously influenced by him, performing one of his songs called, "Double Trouble", when I used to sing with him. A truly classic blues masterpiece. Personally, I can't wait to see him. For a direct link to the festival's website, click here. You'll find all the info you need regarding dates, tickets and whereabouts. By the way, I'll be listed under the name, "Marcy Levy". I hope to see some of you up there! The first video played was "Video Killed the Radio Star". Billi and I had seen the video a few months earlier on some late night music show. I thought it was pretty interesting at the time. Who knew it would kick off such a phenomenon. I believe Billi and Daniella watched that first day of MTV non stop for hours. I know it was on when I got home from work and I watched it all evening. It was so new and fresh. Daniella was just a little one (6 years old) at the time. We "warped her fragile little mind" letting her watch all of that MTV. ;-) Her favorite video was "The Stray Cat Strut". In fact, the first album we bought her was the Stray Cats LP. Billi loved Adam Ant and his videos. My favorite early videos were "Icehouse" by Icehouse, "Vienna" by Ultravox and "Planet Earth" by Duran Duran. Since we are on this subject of early MTV videos, I have a question for the Ecto Oracle. There was a video by a band that had a shaven head lead singer. I believe he was dressed in black. He was standing on a table and there were long flowing wispy curtains blowing in the background. I believe they were orange in color. Billi said that the name of the band had Nouveau in the title. She thinks it was something like Classiques Nouveau. Anyway, we both liked the video and the song. Does anyone remember the exact name of the band and the song title? One more question: Has anyone heard the new Duncan Sheik CD yet? Any early reviews and/or thoughts on it would be appreciated. In its early days (from the time it started through 1984) the only chance I ever had to see it for any length of time was during school vacations, when I would travel down to New Haven to visit my sister, who had cable in her apartment. I particularly remember one day when it was raining, and I literally watched it from the time I got up in the morning until the time I went to bed that night. The MTV News segment that day led off with something about the latest stunt pulled by Wendy O. Williams of The Plasmatics ... I can't recall for sure, but I think it had something to do with blowing up a bus during the making of a video. I remember the world premiere of the "Thriller" video ... the world premiere of Duran Duran's "The Reflex" ... Howard Jones' "What Is Love" ... calling my sister into the room whenever Van Halen's "Panama" came on (she had a thing for David Lee Roth, and that video just cracked her up) ... my first time experiencing BowWowWow ("I Want Candy") ... ... and then there was my very first exposure to KaTe Bush, though I wouldn't realize that until almost ten years later. Some here have heard this story. Late one night, watching MTV, all of a sudden this song with a weird tribal beat and some dark-haired woman shrieking over it starts. The visuals are totally bizarre -- Klansmen on roller skates, the shrieking woman with a dunce cap on her head ... what the hell is that?!? My sister comes into the room, takes one look and switches off the TV. "You'll give yourself nightmares watching that. Go to bed." For YEARS I wondered just what that video had been ... my sister was right, it did give me nightmares! I had been a KaTefan for more than five years before I ever figured it out. I hadn't been able to see too many KaTe videos, and one night in college I came upon _The Whole Story_ video collection in a rental store while visiting a friend over break. Needless to say, when the video for "Sat In Your Lap" started I freaked out. :) My first exposure to KaTe had given me nightmares! The first MTV moment that sticks in my memory (though I had been watching it pretty much since its inception) was the "Asia in Asia" concert, in which they broadcast a live concert in Japan by the band Asia at something like 2 AM. I was working night shift, and took the day off, gathering with friends in the dank climes of New Brunswick, NJ to watch it together. It was a bit of an odd performance, since John Wetton had temporarily quite the band just before the event, and Greg Lake sat in for him. When I was living at my father's house in Verona, NJ, I watched the much hipper Channel 68, which had a bizarre array of videos. And my hard-core introduction to KaTe (though I had heard "The Kick Inside" beforehand) was a non-stop presentation of her videos on Night Flight (was that on the USA network?). Martha Quinn was also a major inducement for me to watch. It was weird seeing the 25th (?) anniversary show not long ago and noticing that she didn't appear to have aged at all. I wonder if she and Dick Clark are vampires. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 21:34:28 -0400 From: Robert Lovejoy Subject: Re: HDTV Steve wrote: > On Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at 09:47 PM, meredith wrote: > > > The Sonys and Magnavoxes and RCA's of the world stand to make a > > KILLING. > > They don't seem to know that, as they're opposed to the new mandate. > But it's not a surprise that the FCC acted, as "the market" was > clearly not going to arrive at a HDTV solution any time soon. Anyone remember AM stereo? Quad audio? Those were left to the marketplace, and left in the dust. Without the government mandate, HDTV is likely to go the same route. From what you two describe it seems like a different station but could there have been two stations in Broomfield? Or did the station I remember become KBDI? Man, how lucky could I get, a Kate Bush fan with a VCR and cable? Wow! He knows that's why I fell in love with him :-). I filled up tape after tape after tape with videos. The first thing I recorded from MTV was "Goodbye To You" by Scandal. One funny difference between then and now is that they didn't have that many advertisers then, and would have long (sometimes 10 minute long) breaks filled up with "musical interludes" - animated shorts with instrumental music and no narration. I don't know what they were called or how to describe them, but they were filler for local ads (of which there weren't any). I got some of them on tape. Memories...there was some really great stuff and some exceedingly silly stuff, and I loved much of it. I don't know if any of these were radio hits, because I didn't listen to the radio, and only knew them from their MTV videos, but off the top of my head I remember seeing: "Living On The Ceiling" by Blancmange, "Vienna" Ultravox, "New Frontiers" Donald Fagen, "Friends of Mr Cairo" Jon Anderson & Van Gelis, "One Step Beyond" Madness, "Steppin Out" Joe Jackson, "Gypsy" Fleetwood Mac, "Avalon" Roxy Music, "Europa and the Pirate Twins" Thomas Dolby, "I Eat Cannibals" Total Coelo, "Wot?" Captain Sensible, "Don't Pay the Ferryman" Chris DeBurgh, "Der Kommissar" by Falco and After the Fire, "Person Person" Joe "King" Carrasco, "Visions of China" Japan, "Norman Bates" Landscape, "Big Electric Cat" Adrian Belew, "All Touch" Rough Trade, "Shiny Shiny" Hayzi Fantayzee, "Bag Lady" EBN-OZN, "Stand By" Roman Holiday, "Puttin' On The Ritz" Taco, "Don't Box Me In" Stewart Copeland & Stan Ridgeway, "Pop Music" M, "Shoop Shoop" Monte Video, "One Night in Bangkok" Murray Head, "Close To The Edit" Art of Noise, among many others, and of course, Kate and Peter. Chris and I first saw the video to "Sat In Your Lap" (I just love your story meth!) when Duran Duran were guest VJs and played it. I've always had a soft spot for Duran Duran because of that. I don't pay much attention to MTV now, and I'm not going to bad-mouth them, but it really is a shame that chances can no longer be taken with weird and unusual videos by unknown artists. That's too bad. Re HDTV The future is now (or, a few years from now) and people will, as usual, go into it kicking and screaming. This has been in the works for several years now, and plenty of warning has already been given. In 20 years all of the turnover angst will be forgotten and the next generations will be taking HDTV for granted. It's like when radio was being replaced with TV, which required new equipment. Our grandparents did it if they wanted to watch the new programming being made for the new device. We have to do it too. Prices on the equipment will come down (DVD players can be bought for under $100 now), and there will be a long overlap period, so there shouldn't be all that many problems. It isn't as if the old TVs, VCRs and DVD players will quit working. People who don't have the right equipment will just not be watching too much TV. The thing is, HDTV makes DVDs look like 6 hr speed VHS. It really is that beautiful and clear and stunning. I've had to make a rule in this house that we will never watch a DVD after watching HDTV, because it just won't fly. I found that out when we first got the capibility to receive HDTV. We watched some program on PBS about life in the oceans or something (I don't remember now since I've seen so many other things since). The show itself wasn't anything that you hadn't seen numerous other times on channels such as the Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel. What was different was that the picture quality was awe-inspiring! After a while you get used to it, and take it for granted, but I was rudely reminded of the difference after it was over. Chris put in one of my favorite movies, Moulin Rouge. Now the Moulin Rouge DVD is absolutely state-of-the-art, and everything about it is reference quality. But, watching it after watching HDTV was a REALLY BAD IDEA. Instead of the bright, beautiful colors I was used to, the colors looked smeary and muddy and runny, while the picture was soft and out of focus. I thought something was wrong with the DVD player!! But no, everything was the same except that my eyes were attuned to HDTV. I made Chris stop the DVD and tried again after a few hours. By then, it was back to the beautiful, crisp DVD I'd remembered. HDTV is one of those things that, like Tivo (the greatest invention since sliced bread!), people don't realize how wonderful it is until they've been exposed to it for a while. Now, if only they'd come out with HD-DVDs already! Yahoo!
