I can only hope he has his bass player with him. Little Jack (Steve Carter, really) tends to roam the stage and act slightly demented when he isn't tied to a bass fiddle. He also mentions a gig in Brooklyn and an ex-band member named Dave Dorbin who is an excellent tuba player. Happy, if you are still looking for a tuba player, Dave Dorbin lives in NYC. Okay, I'm through. But if you want to hear some very good song-writing, drift by CB's Gallery. The band's musicianship isn't too shabby and Little Jack's vocals are good. His covers are eclectic, too. "99 Luftballoons" in German. "Is That All There Is?" "Alabama Song." "Ode to Joy." "Cum on Feel the Noize." "America" from _West Side Story_. Riffing on the _Brady Bunch_ opening sequence is fine ... but in my opinion, if you're going to try to sell rugby shirts to 30-somethings by playing to their remembrances of early-70's television, you have *got* to do something with _Zoom_. Sure, it was just a kids' show on PBS, but I clearly remember pestering my mom for weeks to get me a rugby shirt when I was a preschooler, just so I could be like the kids on _Zoom_. I'm sure I can't be alone in that. But then woj wondered if anyone outside of the Northeast would catch the reference. To my knowledge, even though _Zoom_ originated at WGBH in Boston, it was distributed to PBS stations nationwide -- but of course I may be wrong. So here is a question for you ectophiles between the ages of 30-35 or so who were brought up with public television. Did you watch _Zoom_? (Remember, that was the show with the rugby-shirt-clad kids and the infectious theme song, "Zoom zoom zoom-ba-zoom"... :) And if so, where in the US were you when you watched it? (If these poll results prove favorable, I'm seriously considering writing Old Navy. ;) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 15:51:49 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: a question for my generation Meth asked: >So here is a question for you ectophiles between the ages of 30-35 >or so who were brought up with public television. And the purple people eater is from my generation , a hit song from 1958 (I was in high school), written by Sheb Wooley... see: Meth, I'm not part of your demographic, but my kids certainly are; they grew up watching Zoom... we lived in Boston at the time, and when we moved to San Francisco (1974) I don't remember seeing it there. ~walkabout ------------------------------ Date: 24 Aug 2002 16:57:10 -0500 From: Todd Tyrtle Subject: Re: a question for my generation Hi Meredith, On Sat, 2002-08-24 at 14:10, meredith wrote: > But then woj wondered if anyone outside of the Northeast would catch the > reference. As far as I know, you're right. While I actually watched zoom on wgbh, Sage lived in California and she, too, watched zoom. And we both recall the disappointment after an evening of watching Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Electric Company and Zoom to hear the theme of McNeil/Leherer. Not to mention the fact that any time the wgbh whatever you call it (the screen that said wgbh just before zoom came on) we would get our hopes up that maybe they did, in fact, bring zoom back. - -me the one who might be relocating temporarily (8 months or so) for a job in the Cincinnati after labor day. I wish our vacuum could do that - I have a four year old son who would *love* that. - -todd ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 18:06:17 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: a question for my generation Hi, Todd responded: >Ooh! If you have a canister-style vacuum, you should be able to attach the bag to the exhaust hole in the back. (An upright vacuum, obviously, won't work.) I suppose I'll have to try it with our little portable Oreck and see if it works. :) Thanks for the poll entries, folks ... ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 20:47:26 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: a question for my generation Meth sez: > Did you watch > _Zoom_?
