Dublin, Ireland Whelans Wed., Sept. 25/02 Cork, Ireland Sat., Sept. 28/02 Cool, someone new and interesting comes to Ireland for a change. Now if only we could get Dar to come to Ireland again. andrew From: Ellen Rawson To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Mia Sheard in UK Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 11:42:14 -0700 (PDT) I received an email from Bob Paterson, Dar Williams' UK promoter/manager-type. Along with the other better known acts he's bringing over here was this name. I've not heard of her, but she sounds interesting. We're going to try to make the Winchester gig. Ellen MIA SHEARD Another new name to many, but over the years she has been carving her craft and developing a career in her native Canada. She writes all her own material and on first few listens of her new album 'Reptilian' there are strong hints of Mary Margaret O'Hara (whatever happened to her?), Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Liz Phair, Jane Siberry and even PJ Harvey. It's lush art-rock. She's the latest in what is now a long and strong line of songwriters coming out of Canada this last 2 years. She's got a fan in Irish-based music promoter Paul McGee and she wants to build a following over here in the UK. That was about five years ago. I love her kind of choked-back second soprano voice. I would compare her more to Veda Hille than to any of the other female singers already mentioned. I hope the following isn't old news, but I picked it up from the Maple Music Web site: <Mary Margaret O'Hara for getting back to making music. Her soundtrack to the film Apartment Hunting is a rare start-to-finish gem. With some parts jazz and other parts wacky experimental stuff, Apartment Hunting has grown into a MapleMusic hit and personal favourite.>> Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 10:09:57 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Boston Ectophiles--can you help? Hi, all-- Can anyone help with info? You are _so_ lucky to have her about to move and play there! Her album, _the clearing_ is one of my favourite recent discoveries. Jim and I have both been playing it to death for months. She's not really folkie exactly, but I think her music would go over well in that scene. Actually, there are enough influences in her music that she could play altpop/indie, mainstream, jazz or folk places, as long as they weren't too purist. - --Neile >Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 08:38:18 -0700 >Reply-to: "Rachel Smith" >From: "Rachel Smith" >To: ectoguide@smoe.org >Subject: Ectophiles' Guide - Artist Request > >Name: Rachel Smith >Email: the_clearing@hotmail.com >Topic: Artist Request > >Hi! Disturbingly, she's up against Nickelback in the Outstanding Songwriter of the Year and her other category is Outstanding Pop Recording. Another incredible Winnipeg band, Nathan, is up for Outstanding Album, Independent Artist for their debut "Stranger." Anyone who hasn't heard Nathan yet should definitely check them out http://www.angelfire.com/indie/nathanmusic And for the life of me, I can't remember when the awards actually are, but anyone interested can find out more at www.prairiemusicweek.com. Or, for a cheezy real-audioified version, just click on the "Buffy Theme" link at http://www.drownedinsound.com/bands.php?id=688 Doesn't seem particularly interpretive, but I kinda imagine it'd be best experienced live. I'd have loved to have heard the crowd reaction the first time they did it. 8) It appears it's been enough to get them a cameo on the show this season, though... bob np.
