Along with the other better known acts he's bringing over here was this name. I've not heard of her, but she sounds interesting. We're going to try to make the Winchester gig. Ellen MIA SHEARD Another new name to many, but over the years she has been carving her craft and developing a career in her native Canada. She writes all her own material and on first few listens of her new album 'Reptilian' there are strong hints of Mary Margaret O'Hara (whatever happened to her?), Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Liz Phair, Jane Siberry and even PJ Harvey. It's lush art-rock. She's the latest in what is now a long and strong line of songwriters coming out of Canada this last 2 years. She's got a fan in Irish-based music promoter Paul McGee and she wants to build a following over here in the UK. Hi all - Need your help again, Ectophiles...thanks in advance for everything :^) I'm headed for the East Coast at the end of September! I'll be playing in a showcase for my label Virt Records, in Boston's House of Blues on the 29th. I just got booked at The Living Room in NYC as well, but they're still shaky on the date, which is why I'm writing. Originally I was to play there on the 30th, which would've been perfect, but something came up and now they need me to play either September 27th or October 3rd. It means a longer stay either way, and I'd like to have at least one more show to justify the trip financially. So: anyone over there in New England know of anyone I can open for between 9/27 and 10/3? Are there little coffeeshops with live music where it's a little easier to get booked? Would anyone be interested in hosting a house concert? Thanks, and hope to see you! - - Vienna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 17:51:38 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: Mia Sheard in UK On Wed, Aug 21, 2002 at 11:42:14AM -0700, Ellen Rawson wrote: > I received an email from Bob Paterson, Dar Williams' > UK promoter/manager-type. I highly suggest you go see Mia. I caught her as part of NxNE in June, and I think she's probably one of my 10 favorite discoveries this year. Mia Sheard is also the Discovery Of The Year here at the House O'Muzak. woj and I are roundly booting ourselves in the butt for not going to see her when she was doing a mini-tour through the area with Andy Stochansky earlier this year. (That was before we'd heard _Reptilian_, see. :P) Pretty much all of the comparisons in the little press release you forwarded are right on the money, but she's so much more than that. I've also heard that her live performances can be *very* intense. I really hope she comes back to the Northeastern US someday, so we can correct the error of our ways. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 16:21:08 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Mia Sheard in UK For my take on her, check out http://www.ectoguide.org/guide.cgi?artists/sheard.mia I think she's pretty interesting, though I've never heard her live. - --Neile At 11:42 AM -0700 8/21/02, Ellen Rawson wrote: >I received an email from Bob Paterson, Dar Williams' >UK promoter/manager-type. The dates are September 28th and 29th, and the performer list is absolutely a dream for me. I'll probably only be attending the Saturday session, as, alas, I must return to my home state of Oklahoma to work. One quick thing: I just want to say thanks to those who made this list possible. My musical horizons have grown exponentially since I've been on this list, and I have all of you to thank! Hey, dammit, now I feel that I have to explain myself. The Siberry I hear in her is not in sound, but in approach to songs and lyrics. I hear a lot of similarities there. Of course, it may be only me that does or only me that makes comparisons about approaches to music. My comparison of her with Jane Siberry has nothing to do with them being vaguely obscure Canadian women, because for that matter I'm one myself and it would do just as well to compare her to me. Except I approach writing quite differently. So. Oh well. And anyway, I'm not a media type unless you count The Ectophiles' Guide. Veda's _Auditorium_ and _Silver_ arrived today, so I'm happy. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ............ http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #232 **************************
