Sheila was first and I missed the opening of her set. She was accompanied by a guitarist, a cellist, a drummer/guitarist, and a bassist who did most of his work on the upright. Sheila was on the piano and vocals. As with my previous concert experience at the Mint, I didn't enjoy the first act because of my placement in the venue. I hate tall people. And L.A. seems to have a lot of them. I could only make out what was going on on stage 1/3 of the time. In addition to my not being able to be engaged visually with the performance, i wasn't able to be engaged aurally. The instruments really didn't blend together too well sonically, to my taste, and that left the songs exposed. It's kinda strange, but I sensed a lot of promise and interesting stuff in the songs, but they never really delivered fully. I'm not a huge lyrics person, so when I listen to songs, the most I pay attention to the words is how mellifluously they roll along (or how jaggedly they cut) and how well they complement what the music is doing. From what I could tell, Sheila's lyrics kept getting in the way of the interesting stuff that the music was trying to do. You know, it might have just been that I hated the tone of the cello. Emm was cool as usual. Did some new stuff off of her latest cd, Asianblue. She even got Wally Gagel, who produced some stuff for the album (and who I recognized as having produced Tanya Donelly's Lovesongs for underdogs album) to accompany her on a couple songs. Leona, leona, leona. The entire performance, she seemed like she was drunk, doped up, or maybe she's just naturally loopy. It was just her and her guitars and she managed to nearly fall twice and actually fall once, plug in the wrong guitar cable on 5 straight songs (switching guitars each time and losing track of which cable was which), and electrocute herself for half the set via an improperly grounded amp/guitar connection and the microphone. Still, she was very entertaining, and I thought her songs, even stripped down, were quite good. Leona and Emm are going to be touring the east coast together within the next month, so I recommend you try to catch them Know what? A woman who looked just like Emily Procter (actress who played Ainsley Hayes on the West Wing and is now going to be on CSI:Miami) walked by me in the audience. I did a double take. She's very cute and short. And I saw a woman who looked like Jann Arden talking to Emm after Leona's set. Upon invesimagating on Emm's website, it looks like it WAS Jann since Emm had talked to Jann earlier in the day about making it to the show according to Emm's journal. Jann looked so YOUNG. The Kellie is Kellie While, Chris's daughter, who also sings with E2K and the Albion Band. Ellen Kellie (as part of folk "supergroup" The Reel and Soul Association) will be on TOTP2 this Tuesday (6.20 BBC2) performing the soon to be released single "Warm and Tender Love" (Thea Gilmore lead vocal). An album is due out this month with Kellie singing lead on many of the tracks. Details to follow. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. A link to the play follows: http://legit-theater.org/ When I joined Ecto Richard was in grade school. Now he's graduated college and is a struggling actor in Gotham. Any ectophiles from the area who happen to be into Theatre are invited to check this out. I understand it's inexpensive at $5 a seat. I'll be there on Saturday the 7th. The web site has play info and reservations info as well. Be sure to check out Rich's bio! Richard has extremely ectophilic music tastes. There, I've hopefully made this post relevant! Thanks for your time, and kind wishes to all. I love Jann Arden :) Here's what she had to say about the show in her online journal. I read it every day and love her thoughts and reflections. www.jannarden.com, for anyone who hasn't heard her music (she's amazing!). Pauly, my friend, can you send me your addy again? I need to get your cds back to you and know I promised you my album... jess Here's Jann's journal entry: I am still in L.A. I went to a little club with Russell tonight called the Mint. Emm Gryner was playing on the bill along with Leona Neass. Emm was fantastic. She's one of the good ones. Pretty, compact, electric and effortless. Why she is unsigned is so beyond me, I don't know...She has a song called "Beautiful Things" that is just amazing. It is simply wonderful song writing. I hope the very best for her. She plays bass, piano and guitar unbelievably well. I was completely captivated. There are a few Canadian broads that can't hold a candle to this young girl and they, God help us all, have record deals. Somebody, PLEASE SIGN EMM and give her some much needed push out into the record world. She deserves it. (Although I would like to give her a sandwich...where do all these little people come from?????) Talent is obsolete in the music business. I am reminded of that day after day after day. Leona on the other hand, well, was plastered. Having said that, I still enjoyed her energy and her staggering about like Diana Ross on a good day. Her guitar playing is rustic and real and honest. She is honest. No bullshit whatsoever. You gotta love that. She was funny on top of it all. Apparently she kept getting shocked by the mic. Been there, done that. Her new songs are lovely, dovely, and hearts and valentines and kisses. You know, love dove songs...Good man songs-like where are the good men-those kinds of things. Deserts and parched lips and Mexico. She was raw and sexy and, I am sure, tempting to all who gazed deeply into her glass of whiskey. I could never sing drunk. I filmed some of the shenanigans. I perhaps will post them sometime...I better check with my lawyer first...or at least Janine. Anyway, Leona dear girl, drink a bit of water before you drift off to bed tonight my dear...and eat something you little bugger...sheesh. I went to a movie this afternoon. It was called Signs-does horseshit mean anything to anyone? That's what it was, horseshit. I hated it. "My big fat Greek Wedding" on the other hand (I seem to be saying "on the other hand" quite a bit), was hilarious. There was a hell of a lot of Canucks acting in it-which made it all the better to watch. It's really swell. Go see it just for Andrea Martin. It's worth every cent. In other news... My voice was kinder today. I needed the break from the other one-that other voice can be withering. It leaves you thirsty. But today for some reason, it was breezy and sweet like a kiss. You just never know what it's going to say at any given time. I'll get it right one of these sunny long days. I do wonder why though. I would never want to be young again. I am content just to remember the carelessness. It was something wasn't it? I need to go to bed. I am being lofty and sober and I am going to shut up. The air conditioner in here is so loud, I can't hear my voice at all. Good. j ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 22:26:59 -0400 From: meredith Subject: kym brown in nyc Hi, Posting late, but better that than never ... woj and I (and longtime lurker Rachel Stone, in town from Winnipeg -- I mention her only to see if she actually reads this post, heh ;) met up with Don Keller at CB's Gallery to see Kym Brown play on Wednesday night. Once again, the ectophiles in the audience *were* the audience (I've lost track of how many times that's happened :P). Still, Kym played a great set, and it was well worth the getting home at 3 am and not being able to make it at work the next day. She accompanied herself only with an acoustic guitar run through some effects pedals, and that proved to be more than adequate. She played several songs from _Pygmalion_ (I recall specifically "ETA", "Hologram", and I think "Never Fade Away", though I may have hallucinated that), plus several new ones that were very good. We picked up her little EP, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it because I'm exceedingly lame. I'll try to remember to bring it to work tomorrow. Before she got started, Kym asked if there were any people from the ecto list in the audience ... good thing we were there to say yes. :) We chatted with her for a bit afterwards (I had also met her at the door on the way in, out of pure chance) and she was very nice, and very appreciative of the support she's gotten from ectophiles. She said she hopes to get back to the States to do more shows soon. She was also going to be doing some recording before leaving NYC this week, so hopefully there will be a whole new album sometime soon. In the meantime, you can listen to _Pygmalion_ at http://www.kymbrown.com. It's still every bit as good as it was when we first discovered it three years ago. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #229 **************************
