For a couple of years the shop owners had a tape of oriental country and western looping for my listening pleasure. The music was pleasantly awful. I don't know if the music originated in China, Korea, or Japan, but the odd instrumentation (synthesized banjos and guitars) and un-down home vocals were charming. There were a lot of male/female duets; kind of like Dolly and Porter, but with accents. Nowadays the Nashville boys are using lots of synthesizers, but they can't come near the odd beauty of an oriental take on country. If any of you folks crave Texas music, KERA is streaming a saturday night show (Lone Star Saturday Night) which features Texas musicians. DJ Abbie Goldstein has also interviewed Rhett Miller (Old 97s) and Jimmy LaFave, so far. So you might catch some interesting interviews. Bye, Lyle n.r. Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 15:36:20 -0400 (EDT) Hi you guys. August 14, 2002 I'm playing a show at SPACELAND tonight at 10pm. Spaceland is in silverlake. I don't know the address or number, but my incredibly resourceful manager will hopefully put all of the info at the end of this message?? *smile* Ummmmmm.....tonight's show should be interesting. I'm playing with my friends from 'NO FRIENDLY DROP'....they are an amazing rock band and mysterious characters. They go on at 9pm. Also, Sheila Nicholls will be playing at 11pm. I hear great things about sheila so come and check them out if you can! I hope everyone is having a good summer. On my end, it has definitely been interesting. I'm still reading the same damn books (except I started some new comics) and I'm becoming fascinated with Robert Smith again. (have I ever really stopped though?? GOOODNESS!) It's PORNOGRAPHY again and FAITH. **I'm also listening to a lot of John Mayer. I love him. He should be very scared.** And my other favorite band right now..... IDAHO...jeff martin, jeff martin, jeff martin. Unfortunately, we are not related. Jeff is one of the most talented songwriters and singers I have ever heard and is one of my favorite musical heroes. If you haven't checked his music out...www.idahomusic.com (I hope that is the link), check him out. 'HEARTS OF PALM' and 'LEVITATE'... What you're talkin' 'bout is pure my dearest jeff. Well, keep checking out tour dates cause I keep adding more. I hope to see you all at a show soon. I miss all of you...very very much. Be happy. Come see me soon. This new venue, Plantium Live is an excellent place to gig and see shows. Also, Jenna has been producing a very fine showcase for songwriters, "Circle of Songs", which has been getting taped for possible TV series and normally occurs in the little room at The Knitting Factory. Birdie Hello all! This gig just came in, and I'm really looking forward to it. Below are the details: Thursday, August 15th, 2002 @Platinum Live 11345 Ventura Blvd. Studio City, CA 91604 (Between Tujunga and Vineland) Telephone: 818 753-1771 My Showtime: 9pm-9:30pm Admission: $10.00 Details: I'll be performing after the "Circle of Songs" where 4 songwriters take turns doing their songs. Admission for that part of the evening is free and begins at 8pm. There are always some very talented singer/songwriters and it's well worth it to check it out. Following that is "LA Live", during which I'll be performing solo, acoustic from 9pm to 9:30 pm. This show will be recorded and possibly used for radio, so please come down and make lots of [good] noise, ie, clapping, cheers, etc!! No booing, even if I suck, alright?!!! Platinum Live is a really good venue with a great sound system, which makes it fun for me and everyone else who gets to play there, and I'm very happy and grateful to Jenna who's in charge of the event for inviting me to play. Thanks Jenna!! I hope to see you there and hope you're all having a great summer. I ordered these (well, the black ones) a few years ago when double disc cases couldn't be had for under $.50 each once shipping/handling were taken into consideration. They're decent if you've got a mess of single disc cases gathering dust. Unlike true double-disc cases which pivot at the spine, these trays are hinged just to the right of the spine and in my experience are more difficult to operate one-handed (ie. while driving ;) ) and are a bit reluctant to open to their maximum angle to expose the second disc. Obviously, there's a bit of prying to get your old tray out so you can snap the new one in, and if you're in the habit of printing back covers, unlike standard double cases, you'll need to pop the tray out to insert the cover. On the plus side, though, that means it's not going anywhere by itself, either. I was reasonably satisfied for the price, though am-dig now has a $5 handling charge for orders under $40, so if you only wanted to try a small sample, they're going to cost you. bob np.
