Jackie actually has put a number of CD's in Asia (I think). Most of the Hong Kong actors also put our pop CD's of various quality. It's pretty much if you are a big mega star actor you are also a pop singer and vice versa. The majority of them are pretty bland, I have never really liked JACKIE CHAN's music all that much. I don't own anything of his. The only Asian pop star that I like that has also done some successful movies is FAYE WONG. I haven't really like any of her most recent music, but her earlier stuff is quite ecto friendly. Ectophiles probably are familiar with her music because she had habit of covering ECTOphilic singers like TORI AMOS, COCTEAU TWINS, THE SUNDAYS and THE CRANBERRIES. Her first feature film debut was by the HK new wave director WONG KAR WAI. The movie (CHUNGKING EXPRESS) was quite wonderful, and I would recommend it to anyone that has any interest in no martial arts HONG KONG cinema. Hmmm. There are probably other ectofriendly Chinese pop singers like ZI, TANYA, or maybe PAULINE LAN but I don't know how many people would actually track them down so I won't ramble on. I'm so out of the asian pop scene anyway that I am probably not the best person to write about it. It's been years since I've actually purchased anything from ASIA (not counting a random J-POP cd here or there). Jason Collett has since been added to the bill. Here's some links to the artist's websites: http://www.andreaflorian.com/ http://www.emalinedelapaix.com/home.htm http://www.VYLETZ.com/ http://www.maplemusic.com/artists/bir/default.asp?band_id=70 (Jason Collett's band "Bird") - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 12, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Rant Mode On Productions Presents A Benefit for the Scarborough Community Health Centre Clinic August 17, 2002 C'est What, 19 Church St. (@ Front) Doors 9:30 pm Cover $7 19+ Featuring ANDREA FLORIAN and EMALINE DELAPAIX with guests VYLETZ Rant Mode On Productions is pleased to present their 4th annual benefit concert at venerable Toronto club C'est What, featuring Toronto singer-songwriter Andrea Florian and visiting Australian musician Emaline Delapaix, with the talents of local folk-pop duo Vyletz. For the past four summers, the Rant Mode On collective has presented some of Toronto's best singer-songwriters (including Emm Gryner, Sarah Slean, Luke Doucet, Leslie Feist and more) in support of various local social justice causes (Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, Women in Transition, Red Cross Kosovo Refugee Fund). This year's artists have come together in support of the Scarborough Community Health Centre clinic, a volunteer-based organization that offers free health care to new immigrants and refugees who would not otherwise be able to afford it. Toronto singer-songwriter ANDREA FLORIAN is no stranger to C'est What, having nurtured her warm, acoustic-based sound at the club. A mainstay on the local independent music scene over the past several years, Florian is getting ready to release her first new album in over two years. The album, a collaboration with guitarist Tracy Jones and produced by John Switzer (Jane Siberry), features guest appearances by several noted local musicians and is slated for an early 2003 release. Joining Florian will be Australian singer-songwriter EMALINE DELAPAIX, whose first appearances in Canada last year were extremely well-received. Drawing on everything from pop to jazz to folk, Delapaix blends beautiful vocals with lush melodies, backed by her musical sidekick Amira Pyliotis on guitar and Toronto's Meran Currie-Roberts (Sarah Slean) on cello. Opening the evening will be local duo VYLETZ. Spunky grrls Chelle and Liz have been serving up their brand of honest, catchy tunes with bite for the past two years, making a name for themselves on the local scene with their "Galactic Cherry Delay" CD. Vyletz recently released "Cherry Pits: The Tom Foolery EP", a short collection of live favourites recorded (where else?) at C'est What. The show promises to be a special evening of music for an important cause. That would explain sitting in a Chinese restaurant and hearing a Chinese version of "Winter" come over the sound system. My mouth was gaping. It was a pretty good cover. It didn't really deviate from the original. Seemed like the same exact arrangement. There is an interesting world festival of sacred music coming up for 3 weeks in September, in Los Angeles. It will happen every 3 years. They have about 50 concerts scheduled! Some amazing shows. The closing night concert should be exceptional. www.sacredla.org or www.festivalofsacredmusic.org Cheers Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 14:52:13 -0800 From: deltufjp@magpage.com Subject: reminder: kym brown New York dates Just a quick reminder that Kym Brown will play at the Living Room in New York at 11 PM tonight and at the CBGB's Gallery tomorrow night at 11 PM. She sent me a demo of her new ep and it sounds GREAT. Give her my love! While you're here, maybe you could tell us what's up with Margot Smith these days. I also discovered, much to my surprise, that Kerri Simpson has a new album. From 2001! I guess I need to spend more time exploring my favourite artists' websites. I remember the Living Room. That's where I saw Emily Bezar play, and where I met you and Meth. I will probably go tomorrow night to CBGB's, provided I'm not too tired. It will be my late night. India.Arie is playing a free concert in Bryant Park at 7:30. I don't think that's been mentioned here yet. I haven't heard her music, but have heard good things about it, and I really like her vocals on "Concrete Love," the title track of Julia Fordham's new album (which I really like now, btw. I think I was only so-so on it when I posted here.) So, I will hope to see people tomorrow. I'm short and black, with glasses and curly hair. I won't be wearing an Oberlin sweatshirt this time, but I shouldn't be too hard to recognize. Please say hi! Well, now some of you outside Oregon can actually have a chance to hear them, as they're playing at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco on Sunday, August 18; they also have a show in Sacramento on August 29. I can sort of describe their style as intelligent, high-energy melodic rock, often intricately composed, sometimes improvisational. If that kind of thing fits your taste, I can't recommend these guys highly enough; their live peformances are amazing and getting steadily better. You can also get some idea of their style from the songs they have available for download on tympanicband.com, as well as more information on the Boom Boom Room show. If anyone ends up going, feel free to introduce yourself and tell them Steve sent you. They're really nice, unassuming people. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #225 **************************
