I live in Northern Connecticut (near the Mass. border and 20 miles from Hartford), and I am looking for someone to go to concerts and do other fun stuff with. Due to some health problems, I can't drive far distances and the friends I have in the area are a bit limited in their musical tastes. :) Some idea of the variety of music I like: Tori Amos, Dar Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Bjork, Barenaked Ladies, Stanton Moore, Lenny Kravitz, Grateful Dead, etc. I am a singer and songwriter myself so I appreciate music on many different levels. A few mornings ago, I heard some strains of very familiar music over the speakers at my favorite coffee house, Coffee by Design (small Portland, Maine chain that promotes ethical business practices and local artists, as well as having fabulous coffee and interesting employees). I'm standing with fuzzy skull on the morning line thinking, "I know this. What are they playing?" (duh, wake up!) To my surprise and delight... One of the folks has a copy of "The Keep". "We like Happy Rhodes. She's laid-back but intense." Their biggest question, "Why is she called Happy when her music is so sad?" They were unaware of the rest of her catalogue, and asked if I'd bring in a sampler tape. (I think they'd love MWABT, they had no clue about her electronic bent and were interested.) I know a couple of months back, someone was asking list members to bring free Happy cd's to local venues for some grass-roots promotion. I mentioned CBD as a Portland possibility, and I'd be glad to run a few cds to their different locations. They have a big local customer base and people pay attention to the music being played there and the art being shown there. Anyway, hope all is well out here in ecto during Festival season. If anyone is coming to Vacationland, be sure to give me the heads up. Right now I'm working on getting the floors done in my round house and doing a crazy internship at the Institute of Contemporary Art. There's a ton of stuff happening with the current exhibition. http://www.meca.edu (Check out the William PopeL. eRacism link) http://www.meca.edu/ingestation (and the Ingestation symposium) be well and not too serious... She was the lead vocalist (and what a voice!) for November Project during their brief (yet wonderful) existence. I saw Mary Anne Marino and November Project at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA a couple years ago and was wondering if she's joined another band or is out singing solo. - --Bill n.p.
