I can certainly think of worse reasons to do so. I've seen a lot of great shows there in recent years, like Holly Cole, Jane Siberry, Maire Brennan, Cowboy Junkies, Joan Osborne -- in fact, it was when she opened for Joan there that I discovered local singer/songwriter Nicole Campbell, for which I'll be eternally grateful. It's my current favorite concert venue. Now I just need to go get Jonatha Brooke tickets tomorrow... ;) John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 02:31:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Lucy Kaplansky UK dates Here are Lucy's UK/Ireland dates in the autumn. I was just going to send them to Adam, but I thought others might be interested. It was good to meet you last night, Adam! Should I lie and say the show was awful? :) Last night was Dar at the Borderline, a sold-out show. I will write more later, but I will say she was in great form. Alas, she broke the Borderline's 11:00 PM curfew by a mere five minutes. With two opening acts, and Dar not taking the stage until 9:30, there just wasn't enough time. However, the opening acts were good. I was impressed by Jonah Hex, a band from Brighton. Only five of them were there last night -- two guys on acoustic guitar, a woman on oboe (I think she usually plays keyboards), and two women singing -- one on lead vocals and the other doing harmonies. I think they show promise. I also think they would be a great opening act for the Indigo Girls over here. They were missing their drummer and bassist last night. I'll write more about Dar later. (Btw, Adam, it was a solo show.) I did want to mention something she brought up, though, that I'd not heard of. She discussed Steve Earle's "John Walker's Blues" briefly - -- how she wanted to support him. The new album hasn't been released yet, but already it's stirring up controversy and will probably be banned from various radio playlists. I did some checking and read that he's been joking with Canadian audiences about how he'll probably be deported. More later. Here are the Lucy dates. Oh, one more quick Dar note for those on this side of the pond. The new album, most likely out in January, will be released over here the same time as in the US! 25/9 Jazz Cafe, London, UK 26/9 Arts Centre, Pontardawe, UK 27/9 Errigle Inn, Belfast, UK 28/9 The Shelter, Dublin, Ireland 3/10 City Hall, Sheffield, UK 4-5/10 Folk Club, Westhoughton, UK 6/10 St. Andrews in the Square, Glasgow, UK Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. It included the events as described by Daryll Purpose as posted earlier. I recently lost my wife of 21 years and the words she used really hit home. I will do my best to see if I can get them from the station and post them here. For committing the crime of not marching in lockstep with the jingoism mandated by our esteemed government since 9/11, Steve Earle is facing a firestorm of criticism. And all because he had the unmitigated gall to write a song that tries to understand John Walker Lindh, U.S. Public Enemy Number Two's point of view. Don't *even* get me started. :P I'm not a Steve Earle fan, but I am planning to buy a copy of the album when it comes out, just to support him and his right to sing about whatever the hell he damn well wants to sing about, dammit. Despite our current administration's attempts to dismantle the First Amendment, we still have freedom of speech in this country ... at least for now. :/ ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 22:39:33 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Kym Brown news Hi, Neile forwarded: >>*Kym is off to NYC on Aug 3rd to write and play a >>couple of shows.
