"I Before E Except After C" was never really a "song" in one sense. More of a sound art type of track. A google search has interesting results. Some seem to think it a complete throw-away. It seems that more than a few die hard Yazoo fans could not stand this track which is found on the early 80's "Upstairs at Eric's" lp. I believe it was dropped off of the UK pressing...a pity because it shows the experimental nature of early synth-pop. Unfortunately WAYYY over the heads of the dance fan base they ending up with. Daniel Miller of Mute records, the produced of the Yazoo LP's, himself an musician (The Normal) and a visual Artist should have received more credit then he ever did for ever releasing the original track. At the least it shows that Yazoo were not scared to "play" around in a sound studio at a time when they were minting hits. They could have gone in a Meredith Monk type direction it would seem also. Nowottny has added a low-fi synth dub base to the track, developing a full vocal melody around a few notes found in the original. She has keep the ascending synth riff (that sounds like a flute patch) but dirtied it up with a fuzz. Reminds me a little of The Raincoats or maybe The Slits.... She keep the laughing part by transferring it to tape loops and delays. If this is the "Nu electro" so be it.... Allison Moyet's vocals, like Nowottny's, fall somewhat in the lower register are always powerful and unique. Both voices are brilliant in the synth-pop context... mdabc > On Fri, 12 Jul 2002 22:03:58 -0700 > "abaton" wrote: > > > He mentions Marianne Nowottny and the > > track she > > contributed "I Before E Except After C." > > That anyone covered this track at all is worthy of a doubletake. Ordinary British guy getting involved with magic types. Is with Beautful woman and is falling in love. She and another have just told him about some of the very heavy travails ahead and he chickens out a bit. She says, "Not even for me?" and his answer: "Not even for Kate Bush dipped in honey!" Bye, KrW "It's not lady-like to make such noise with your gum!" She's a fellow berklee graduate, has a beautiful voice, and writes fabulous songs, IMHO. THe show is at Genghis Cohen, located in Hollywood at 740 North Fairfax; she goes on at 8:30 PM, and Deb Talen from Boston goes on at 9:30. I'll be nervous as hell, so come on down and buy me a few rounds. I'll need them. :) Check out www.sylvielewis.com and listen to the song "I Saw Mexico." Such a good song. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 23:19:14 EDT From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: garrison starr/tift merrit in concert yesterday Just a short review here. I saw them both at the Mint in L.A. Tift went on first and boy was it packed. I was uncomfortably pinned against a railing at the nexus of all traffic. All the food traffic, waitresses, bathroomers, and more seemed to make it a point of walking on my feet during the entire performance. So, needless to say, that detracted from my enjoyment of the show. But even when I could pay attention, I didn't find Tift to be anything more than dull. I kept thinking that her songs and band really reminded me of Maria Mckee's first two albums (especially the self-titled one) , and I couldn't figure out why I didn't like her while I love Maria Mckee. So after that semi-painful portion, Garrison Starr came out and rocked the house with her band. She pulled up several guests including Peter Stuart (wasn't he Dog's Eye View?) and Janet Robin and seemed to be recognizing people left and right in the audience (I guess cuz she used to live in L.A.). She spotted Patty Griffin's guitarist/producer Doug Lancio at one point. But anywho, she gave great performance. This was the second time I saw her (first time was solo opening for Holly Cole in DC in '98) and I was again struck by how clearly and purely her voice cuts through everything. Sweet old power pop rock and roll. Paul Kim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #195 **************************
