Let's try another new artist. Anyone heard the new Pieta Brown CD? Or seen her live? Yes, she is the eldest daughter of Greg Brown, and has a new CD out. It's produced by Bo Ramsey (who has been sideman and producer for Greg for years and also lately produced Essense for Lucinda Williams and then toured with her). Pieta and Bo are touring together now. I have the CD, and its folky with a good dose of blues and jazz thrown in. A bit of Lucinda's vocal style, with a voice and an energy not far from Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders or Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. Very mellow, good songwriting, but more mood music than brilliant stand-out songs. http://www.trailer-records.com/artists/pieta_brown.shtml Any thoughts?? The owner of noncommercial WBEZ radio in Chicago is buying WAJW in Chesterton, IN (northern Indiana near Gary and Valparaiso). WAJW presently simulcasts eclectic, ecto-friendly WFMU all the way from New Jersey but will soon switch to a simulcast of Chicago's WBEZ. You can catch a listenable WBEZ or repeater all the way into Kalamazoo, in Michigan. There are plenty of areas in central and southern Illinois that are either served by painfully underfunded public radio stations, or aren't served at all. It would be great to see the effort expended out in the wasteland, instead. ....................................................... Hello everyone, Michael Paoletta has written a glowing review of the Yazoo tribute which is entitled entitled "Nobody's Diary" in his BeatBox column in Billboard magazine (July 20th issue, page 25). He mentions Marianne Nowottny and the track she contributed "I Before E Except After C." This is great news for Marianne. It is her first mention in Billboard Magazine. Who would have thought it would be in the Dance/Electronic section? This has been a weird week. Abaton Book Company is offering copies of this cd release for $10.00 post-paid to ecto folks in the USA. We saw Vienna Teng >at the The Blue Rock Shoot in lovely downtown Saratoga. Kia Ora Bill & Billi etc, what gorgeous music that was, and so unexpected to end a holiday with the music I had begun it with on the plane, dazed and half asleep, listening to a mixture of the snorer next to me and Vienna's 'Waking Hour'. Once home I downloaded all the new snippets off her website (!) since I had the lovely lullaby 'Anna Rose' in my head, and I remembered 'Shasta' as a song catchy enough that you want it to pause for you to breathe. My memory sings 'Alma Rose', a musician in Auschwitz I believe, so I'll have to get rid of that. A number of the non-Waking Hour songs (new songs? or just unrecorded?) are story ones, other people's stories I mean (truck driver, young pregnant woman..), not ones that can get confused with the singer's personal life, even though those too are often inventions. Vienna's voice seemed stronger, maybe more experienced to me, and still clear and pure and beautiful. She's so skilled with the piano. It's a pity Vienna can't record more new stuff immediately, but 'Waking Hour' is an album that could really catch on with a label behind it, and endless variations of 'gravity' are fine with me, one for every planet. You're brave, Vienna, to quit your job, but I've no doubt it's the right decision. Other concerts I saw include Susan Werner and Richard Shindell together in NY - she did both her guitar music and jazzier/comic-cabaret piano songs - hilarious performer as well as great musician; I loved how loud Richard's music was live, a step further away from pleasant folk-rock, more urgent; but compared to Susan he is uncomfortable onstage. Got to see Land of the Blind, all of the musicians were worth watching, but it is definately Cyoakha who makes the music distinct and alive, her voice is so powerful, rich and fluid, suited to delicate lullabies through to the energetic songs audience members threw themselves around to. And heaven looks something like Amoeba records, with a bit of the Virgin megastore on Champs Elysees thrown in. I hate the end of trips - need to convince all my friends & family & favourite trees to leave their lives and come join me, instead of me coming home. That anyone covered this track at all is worthy of a doubletake. I'm eager to hear what she does with it. - -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #194 **************************
