When I found myself qualifying last year for a nice severance in exchange for an early departure from my employer, the timing was darn near perfect. It was not only a chance to regain my life and sanity from a job I'd come to detest, but also do something I'd been promising myself for way too long -- go back to school. Since then I've been pursuing a software engineering degree, and generally having a grand time of it. I also recently missed a couple of concert appearances by artists I'm very fond of: Cowboy Junkies (I was healing from some oral surgery) and Beth Orton (general obliviousness). At about this time it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, I might have made it to at least *one* of them if I'd still been participating in the group mind that is ecto. (That, and a quick nose-poke into r.m.gaffa for the first time in years reminded me of just *why* it had been years -- but on to pleasanter topics.) So here I am, and not only is Happy working on an "imminent" new release (?), I just downloaded and listened to the new Tori song via mp3 (thanks Dan!). AND a new Beth Orton album (Daybreaker) on Katemas. Very cool. Current/recent fave artists: Beth Orton Cowboy Junkies Kate Tori Happy Sarah McLachlan Joan Osborne Garbage Sixpence (when *will* that next album be released?) Nicole Campbell (local Portland artist who deserves a much wider audience -- see http://www.nicolecampbell.com) ...and of course way too many more to list. It just doesn't seem to be too stable or reliable yet. > BTW, whatever happened to "Suspended in Gaffa"? It's up. I shut it down earlier this year when we had to switch to crappy cable modem when 2 different providers went out of business. I'd warily kept it shut down when the webcaster royalties issue first came up a couple of months ago, but then I figured what the hell. Like the fella says in the article, if they want money they'll have to come to my door and get it. And they won't get it anyway. I have, perhaps only temporarily, cut the playlist from 8000+ songs to 700. If I have to cut it down to where I'm playing nothing but Happy Rhodes all the time, that's ok too. I know Happy won't come after me! Thanks for asking! :-) http://vickie.homeip.net:8000/ Vickie Sign up for SBC Yahoo! There was a segment on their new album RABBIT SONGS on All Things Considered yesterday, and it gave me one of those rare "hearing something so beautiful on the radio that I almost drove off the road" experiences.
