But then, it's Portsmouth and not London. I don't know the venue in Portsmouth -- it could be horrid; it's just a lot closer to home and therefore, cheaper to get to in general. I was at Union Chapel last night for the Be Good Tanyas. The sound sucked. Darden Smith was the surprise opening act. Poor man. He kept asking the sound guy for help -- there was a lot of feedback from one of his guitars even when he wasn't using it! The sound guy did a few things, which made it worse. At one point, Smith stood in front of the mike and unplugged the guitar. It was much better. I could understand the lyrics. Smith took it all in stride, though. The sound was better in terms of no reverb from a stray guitar with the Tanyas, but we couldn't understand the lyrics. And we knew some of them. The sound was fine for the instruments but not for the vocals. (And one point Sam asked the sound guy to please mute her guitar -- the one she wasn't playing, btw.) My husband was wondering if Union Chapel actually has a full-time sound person working there -- someone who actually knows the venue. It's a beautiful place, but it's incredibly cavernous. I've decided that I have to sit dead center in the front row there. The best sound I encountered there was last summer with Richard Thompson (and Christine Collister, who came out as a special, unannounced guest during the encore). We sat there for him, and the sound was great -- maybe because he was only a foot away. We didn't hear the amplification; he heard *him*. The Tanyas, btw, were good, but I was a little disappointed. The music was nice, but I kind of expected a little more energy. Sam was trying to get into it, but generally, they just kind of stood and sang and played their instruments and tuned. I would have liked more involvement with the audience and the music itself. > > And finally....Gemma Hayes. Yep, the BIG HYPE I've > been mentioning. I've listened to it once; I need to listen to it more to make any sort of decision. Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. After that, it's just books." - -- JRR Tolkien Sign up for SBC Yahoo! The full scoop on this is at http://www.rivertorivernyc.org. Apparently tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis only, to be handed out starting at 5 pm. Only two tickets will be given per person. Needless to say, this makes things rather difficult for those who may want to come from out of town (like me and woj) ... We'll figure it out somehow. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 19:58:33 -0500 (CDT) From: kerry white Subject: spam attack Hi, anyone [here] ever heard Saf-E Mail Systems?? I threatened about a dozen people with legal action when they started sending spam which appeared to originate from domains I administer, on the grounds that they were de-valuing the professional reputation of my services. Funnily enough, they started using that "your server has not been compromised" disclaimer shortly after my letters went out. The good news is that, despite their header-forging, any admin worth his/her salt ought to be able to filter the messages into the undeliverable hell they deserve. - -- d. - ------------------------------------------------- Mayo-Wells Media Workshop dmw@ http://www.mwmw.com mwmw.com Web Development * Multimedia Consulting * Hosting ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jul 2002 21:18:14 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: spam attack Hi, > Hi, anyone [here] ever heard Saf-E Mail Systems?? I have been getting >mortgage spam at work "from" a co-worker with a "reply-to" to me???? Two possibilities: one, that someone who received a spam from Saf-E Mail Systems and just happens to still have it in their inbox is infected with the Klez-e virus, which sends random email from the infected inbox out to people in the infected person's address book, with addresses selected randomly from other messages in the inbox in the "from" header. The second is that someone using Saf-E Mail is spamming in such a way that both the "from" and "reply-to" headers are forged, using the recipient's e-dress as well as an e-dress randomly selected from the recipient's inbox. (Same technology, different result.) My guess is, the spam in question came to you via the second method. >The >latest one has a disclaimer from the unnamed company that says the spam >was sent via Saf-E Mail and filled those fields with my info to stop >undeliverables which "clog up the net". I want to shoot these people but >would be happy to find a way to stop this crap!!! Do NOT respond to these to "unsubscribe"! All you're doing is proving to the spammer that your e-dress actually works. The best way to fight spam is to report it. I use SpamCop (http://www.spamcop.net), which parses the headers of the message to determine where it really came from, and sends a notification to the Abuse mailbox of the appropriate server(s). It works pretty well ... and the reporting utility is free. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #190 **************************
