Sure it was pop music, the female equivalent of HANSON, but still, there was something nice and catchy about the songs, and the fact that they wrote and played instruments added to it as well. I was even impressed with their horrible chinese version of their song, that they sung in chinese. Terrible accents, but still, they tried and halfway succeeded. But their most recent album, is pretty lackluster and bad. Such a disappointment. I was hoping for them to grow on what they had achieved with their first album, and well....talk about sophomore slump. Every song sounded like a leftover bside from their first album. And I'm not saying their first album is great, but it's certainly better than their second. Anna is a real original--writing good songs with lots of passion and a distinct voice. She talks like Victoria Williams sings, but when she sings her voice has surprising depth, character, and power. Part Joan Baez, part Chrissy Hynde, with a bit of the eccentricity of say, Kathleen Yearwood. Check her out if you get a chance! This will be her first time performing in most of these cities and I'm sure she'll be thrilled if people actually show up who have heard of her! Anna fronts a band, but will be touring solo. We've had her do two official (and one unofficial) house concerts in the last two years, and have easily seen her a dozen or more times. Her music leans toward folk/singer/songwriter, but her voice has a lot of idiosyncracies in it. While capable of a dead-on Joan Baez impression, she's just as likely to growl, hiccup and introduce various curious vocal affects. Her songs range from pretty ballads to stories about UFO abductions, love and murder, spirituality and some killer kids songs. Plus, she talks just like Victoria Williams sings. If anyone does catch any of these shows, be sure to go up and tell her (or Philip, the soundguy/husband) I said hi. We saw her perform some of these live when she opened for Veda about a year ago in Vancouver (funny how we went to Vancouver to hear her when she's a local artist here in Seattle), and hearing her made me anticipate how wonderful this album would be, and it is--it repays all of that anticipation in spades. Like Veda's and Emily Bezar's and several others, Robin Holcomb's albums are the kind that take a few plays to adjust your ears to so you can really _hear_ the music, and the more I hear this the more I love it. A couple of the songs are immediately catchy, like "Like I Care" while others are subtle and less structured and take some listening to really appreciate. But the album is utterly worth it. This is probably her best album so far, and is my favourite with the possible exception of her first self-titled album, which I have a long emotional attachment with. Those of you who love Veda and more experimental music will love this album. Highly, highly recommended. - --Neile ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #188 **************************
