I actually thought it was funny that she was performing gay pride as well. I'm not aware of her being gay (though she might as well be), but plenty of straight acts play the Pride festival, especially if they have a large gay or lesbian following. There hasn't been tons of press on her at all here in the states so maybe that is why. Not that the gay press are all that great at covering the smaller, lesser known artists.... I mean if I see one more article about CHER.... I haven't really listened to anything by JULIA FORDHAM since PORCELAIN, which for me, was a great and beautiful album - and something I listened to often back when it came out in the early 90's? I can't remember. I pretty much had it and EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL's LANGUAGE OF LIFE on constant rotation. I certainly can hear the jazz and blues influence in her music but I have never heard that much RnB in her stuff. I was most interested in her latest because INDIA.ARIE sings on it, and I loved her wonderful ACOUSTIC SOUL. Anyway perhaps I will try to track JF's new one. Now I want to listen to PORCELAIN but I haven't a clue as to what I did with the tape. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll see if can find some MP3's tonight and go and buy it tomorrow. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jun 2002 12:15:14 EDT From: Paul2k@aol.com Subject: Re: peter gabriel reissues; holly mc Peter Gabriel recently had his catalog of albums (well, most of it) remastered and rereleased. There were several thousand (maybe 10,000) that were put into Limited Edition Digipaks, the rest I believe went into normal jewel cases, and I'm guessing these will take the place of the older original versions. The cd art is also a little different, with some added stuff. Hey, it gave me an excuse to finally pick up So and Us. I bought Holly McNarland's latest cd from HMV.com for the sale price of $6.97 US. Definitely a lot less rough around the edges, more sweetness, but there's still that seething rage underneath. We'll have to see if it grabs hold of me. Numb was one of my top albums from '97. Two things that I have been obsessing over the past couple months are Eddi Reader and Aterciopelados. Thanks to Jeff W for pointing me towards www.importcd.com where the two latest Eddi cds are. I just can't get enough of her voice. A friend at work, after I lent him Kirsty MacColl's "Tropical Brainstorm", lent me Aterciopelados' latest cd "Gozo Poderoso." Like Kirsty's album, "Gozo Poderoso" mixes various latin styles with pop and rock using samples, drum machines, acoustic and electric instruments, and irresistable vocals. I'm not a latin music fan (Aterciopelados won the Latin Grammy for best rock album) and yet I am so very hooked on the album. And, hey, www.mymusic.com has it for $10.90. Driving through PA was horrendous as some truly terrible rain probably added about an hour or two to our drive! The Artist Shop will have a table at NEARfest, so I hope if any of you are there, you'll stop by the table and say hello. In addition to having Happy's catalog available for sale, I'll also have a batch of promos that Happy sent me (among other promos). Basically this is to help potential Happy fans in taking that first step. We all know they'll be hooked from there. So if you have any friends at NEARfest who need to be turned on to Happy's music, bring them on by! Molly Zenobia and the Dresden Dolls are playing the Knitting Factory *main stage* this Sunday night! This is totally last minute, we just got the offer this week and confirmed the details yesterday. Any of you in/near NYC, please come! It'll be an incredible show, and if Molly can draw a good crowd she can get asked back, get more gigs in NYC, and all sorts of good stuff like that. Unofficially, I also know there's probably going to be a nice indie record label in attendance, who have expressed interest in Dresden Dolls... Molly's bringing her band: Dave on drums and Dan on bass. She'll be playing a real piano, a 7 foot grand! She's also bringing her groove box and laptop to play samples, so you may hear live performances of some of the acoustically stranger material such as Silent Spring, that don't often get played at shows. Dresden Dolls is a band I first saw last fall - I met them through a friend in common, Liz Nickrenz, also ecto-ish. They've become my favorite Boston band without question, and I think that anyone who likes Molly Zenobia band would also like Dresden Dolls. Their live shows are always intense and amazing. I saw Dresden Dolls last Wednesday, and again this Wednesday, and can't wait to see them again. I will be heading down to NYC (from New Hampshire, even) just for this show. It'll be $7 and ALL AGES. Come join us! Tell all your friends! :) I'm including below a copy of the mailing that went out to the Molly Zenobia mailing list earlier today, which has more details. After that, I'm adding part of my first post to ecto about Dresden Dolls, from November. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Molly Zenobia" Subject: [NYC] main stage Knitting Factory, this Sunday Once again, three great groups! Tonight Dresden Dolls played at WBRS, and not so coincidentally, I saw them live for the first time. Dresden Dolls is Amanda Palmer, who writes and signs and plays keyboard, and her drummer / guitarist. Liz Nickrenz (another musician I've posted about on ecto) has been telling me about Amanda for some time, and I finally met her at a Scissorkiss concert a couple of months ago. Scissorkiss is the industrial synthpop band that Liz is fronting as of last winter. So, I booked Amanda's band for a WBRS show, and also for a show I'm putting together at the Middle East w/Scissorkiss & Molly Zenobia on November 19th (more on that in another post). But, until tonight, I had never actually seen her perform. I wasn't engineering tonight, so I was thinking I might go to see the show or I might not. I got into work early, and work dragged on, and finally when I got to leave at 10pm I was feeling tired and really wanted to go home to sleep. On my way home from work, I turned on WBRS, and heard Dresden Dolls... and changed course and headed there. I was blown away, jaw-dropping dumbfounded. My emotional reaction to her performance was more similar to my emotional reaction to the first Veda Hille performance I saw, than anything else. Veda with her band, at some college in CT a few years ago. It had that same kind of flavor to it. Trauma and beauty intertwined, darkness that's not necessarily in the minor keys, sudden jumps and jolts from cute to thunderous to sweet to sharp to gothic to crashing to delicacy to abyss. I haven't had this strong a reaction to a new (to me) musician in 14 months [14 months ago, to the day, was when I first saw Molly Zenobia play]. It's going to take me a while to come down off the effects of seeing this show. After it was over I was temporarily spoiled for music, craving only to listen to things of the same level of power. I stuck Spine in the CD player at WBRS just before I left, while the engineer was cleaning up, and cued it to strange, sad. I got in my car, tuned in, and turned up the volume. INSTRUCTIONS. One Hot Summer. Then, fortunately, I had a CD-R of a live Molly Zenobia concert loaded in the car, so I flipped to the rearranged band version of "When Does The Bullet Fall" (originally recorded solo on Skin, now significantly reworked). That carried me home. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@aaaaa.org cos@polyamory.org -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "Would you still love the sky if there wasn't any blue?" -- Molly Zenobia, "Sky" ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #180 **************************
