I don't really mean in terms of music or sound, but rather in terms of themes. DILATE and LE both sound totally raw and emotional, at least the most raw and emotional that I have yet to hear from either artist. And yeah I love LIVING IN CLIP. I've since moved away from listening to ANI's stuff for a variety of reasons (I am sure that I will eventually swing back to it, but my tastes have shifted quite a bit) but on the rare occasion that I do listen to her, LIVING IN CLIP is what I pick up. I recently saw one of his older albums re-released in some "special limited edition" version. It was priced the same as the other used CD's in the bin, but I didn't know what made it "special limited edition." did he re-release them with extra tracks or is it just remastered version? Any info on this would be swell.... - -- ALSO for anyone in the bay area (there seems to be quite a few bay area ectophiles) this weekend: as you probably know it's GAY PRIDE weekend, and I just discovered that JULIA FORDHAM is going to be playing on the main stage. They buried her on SATURDAY (most of the events happen on SUNDAY, like the main parade - though I guess the dyke march happens on Saturday, but it just spills out in the Castro. Now that I think about it, i've NEVER been down to the Civic Center area on the SATURDAY or PRIDE WEEKEND though I know stuff happens....). Apparently they have dubbed the "Saturday" event as a "jazz and blues" event. Is JULIA jazz or blues? I dunno. Whatever. I hate classifications, though I understand they are a necessary evil. Anyway - if anyone is interested in seeing her perform go to CIVIC CENTER this SATURDAY. I think she is scheduled 2:35pm (she gets a 35 minute set, though if they run late, that may not be true). You can check http://sfpride.org for more details (click the link on the top left "events" and then click "celebration" or "main stage" link). irvin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 03:00:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Kevin Dekan (kcd@romulus.cray.com) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Kevin Dekan Mon June 27 1960 Cancer Samantha Tanner Tue June 30 1970 Wild Goose BunkyTom Tue July 02 1968 Cancer Anders Hallberg Tue July 03 1962 Cancer Kevin Harkins Thu July 05 1973 Cancer Laurel Krahn Mon July 05 1971 Cancer John J Henshon Mon July 05 1954 The Year Of The Horse / Ruled By The Moon Jim Gurley Mon July 06 1959 Cancer Lisa Wilson Fri July 08 1960 Moonchild with Java Rising Courtney Dallas Fri July 09 1971 Catte Michael Peskura Sat July 09 1949 HallOfFamer Finney T. I wouldn't call Julia Fordham jazz or blues, though her most recent album, Concrete Love, has a lot of r&b influence/flavor on it. It's mostly subtle, but it's a bit too much for me. Maybe not the individual tracks, but the mood of the first 3 songs becomes a little samey. Actually I think it's the choruses that I don't like quite so much. She has these r&b full choruses that kind of break up the song, similar to the use of gospel choruses on the Falling Forward album. The first track I really enjoy is the fourth, also the title track, which features India.Arie on vocals. Some of the following songs which are more straightforward pop/rock I enjoy a lot too. Julia's voice and singing can be very sensual, and this is, I think, the most sensual album she's made since Porcelain. This doesn't make her jazz or blues or r&b, but I think her music, at various times, uses some influences from all three. I was going to post about it, but wanted to listen to it more before commenting. So these are opinions based on 1 or 2 listens and are quite subject to change. In general, I think it's a pretty good album, and there are already some songs I really like. I think the rest of it will grow on me. I think it's a little funny that she's performing at the Pride Festival. I'm not saying that she should or shouldn't be; I have no opinion on that. Just that over the years there have been a lot of people who think she's a lesbian because of the song "Girlfriend" from Porcelain. "Don't tell your girlfriend about me cause your girlfriend won't like girls like me" It's clear from the lyrics that the girlfriend of the title is the new girlfriend of the singer's ex, and the ex could be male or female. Rereading this, it doesn't sound like a very positive review. On the new album, overall I'd say first impressions rate it a B, but the jury is still very much out. In general I like Julia a lot. I love her voice, smoky, moody, sultry. And Porcelain is one of my favorite albums ever, one of those very near perfect albums where every song is a gem. Even the album cover is sexy (I think that's why it). I've liked her work since then, particularly East West which is more acoustic and less produced than the previous one, Falling Forward, but I haven't loved anything like Porcelain. I've only had a chance to listen to it twice in the mornings so far, and haven't gotten all the way through yet (only due to time constraints, ie having to get to work on time) but it sounds great so far. It's lighter than her previous work, but it still kicks hard. The difference between songs like "Elmo" and the songs on this album is sort of like the difference between PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me" and "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea." Definitely worth checking out. Unfortunately, the only place I've seen it so far is on AB Sound. That's actually how I learned of it, browsing the sale catalog. They had it for $9.99 Canadian. I don't think it's on sale anymore, but they tend to rotate their sales, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it on sale again in another week or so. They're good if space is an overwhelming problem, but make spotting things on the shelves close to impossible, since they have no spine. I've been moving my more-listened CDs back into jewel boxes so I can find them without having to pull a whole stack of slippery sleeves and thumb through them. For my traveling, I've put the CDs in those zipping-up book-like holders. But I'd only recommend them for travel or for storing CDs which didn't come with printed materials (booklets, tray cards, etc). - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 07:58:44 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: plastic cd slips storage thingies At 10:41 AM -0500 6/27/02, Joseph Zitt wrote: >On Thu, Jun 27, 2002 at 12:28:30AM -0600, Neal Copperman wrote: >> The sleeves I use can be purchased from >> http://www.cadencebuilding.com/cadence/cdsleeve.html. >> >> Don't know if this is what he wants or not. That's easily enough dealt with--we keep one jewel box per artist and put a name label in it. Single-disc artists are never moved into the sleeves. Having the divider jewelboxes helps keeps the whole thing more upright, the discs are easy to find, and they still take up much less space. It has been the perfect solution for us. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ............ http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 10:56:13 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: plastic cd slips storage thingies On Thu, Jun 27, 2002 at 07:58:44AM -0700, Neile Graham wrote: > That's easily enough dealt with--we keep one jewel box per artist and > put a name label in it. I tried that, and it worked in some senses but not others. One frustration was that I kept forgetting that I had certain CDs by some artists, since they were hidden from view. Another, more serious one, is misfiling. For moths i thought that I had lost a particular CD by an artist that I like a lot, but it turned out that I had inadvertently filed the disc one shelf down from there, into the stack for another artist to whom I listen much less often. Had I had the disc in a container with a spine, I would have spotted the misfiling much more readily. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 10:30:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: Imogen Heap news Hi, You might not have heard much about Imogen Heap in awhile, but she's reappeared in a project called Frou Frou, with producer/musician Guy Sigsworth.
