I was amazed to learn that the Veda's live Auditorium album is done! Looks like her promise of a July release, which seemed wildly optimistic to me, is actually going to be on the mark. The CD's are due back from the manufacturer in mid-July. Having been at both the shows, I feel pretty confident that this is going to be one of my favorite albums of the year! neal np: lips (music for saying it) - jane siberry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 13:20:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Ani in London - --- ebgb@textmode.net wrote: > > Got Ani Difranco tomorrow to enjoy first though. :) > So, where were you among the masses? We were way up in the third level. My husband decided Friday afternoon that we should go. I was in Leeds and was busy there through Saturday night, so I sped back south Sunday. We thought the sound was horrible. On the tube afterwards, we were talking to other folks who'd been at the show. One woman said she saw Joan Armatrading at Shepherds Bush three years ago, and the sound was fine. Lately, it's been awful. For the opener, Amber Bela-Muse (she has promise, btw -- very lush sound with cello, string bass, etc. -- no CD released yet as far as I know), her voice was fine, but the instruments were competing with each other. For Ani, the instruments were fine, but you couldn't hear her. They finally got it to the point where you could hear her between-song patter, and you could hear her when the accompanying music was fairly soft. Otherwise, however, it was difficult. I haven't seen Ani in a few years. While I didn't mind the horns, etc. on *Little Plastic Castles* when it came out, I did have a problem with the horn, sax, etc. on some of the songs last night. I was missing the version of "Not a Pretty Girl" that I used to know... On the other hand, it was good to see/hear Julie Wolf again -- hadn't seen her since the last time I'd seen Laura Love before I moved to the UK. I might add that I'd read Ani's poem about September 11th, but I'd not heard her perform it. That alone was worth the price of admission. Ellen, waiting for the Be Good Tanyas and Dar next month. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. There were way more people there than I expected. I know that Ani is popular amoung the people on this list but I've never met anyone else that's even heard of her! I've never had to queue so long at the SBE and I've been there quite a few times. And the audiance could compete on a equal standing with a Tori Amos crowd in applause and screaming ability! I was a bit disappointed not to get a downstairs ticket but I only booked a couple of weeks ago when I saw the posters when I went to see All About Eve, who were fantastic by the way! For everyone else I've seen at the SBE, apart from Gary Numan, I've been downstairs and that's much preferable to the stalls where the seats are awful. I'd much rather be standing than in a seat roughly half the minimal required size for comfort. > afternoon that we should go. The SBE seems to be pretty variable in that respect, some shows I've seen have been excellent, others not so good. > at Shepherds Bush three years ago, and the sound was > fine. Lately, it's been awful. For the opener, Amber > Bela-Muse (she has promise, btw -- very lush sound I'm glad you caught her name. She was good, definatly one to watch I reckon. It's a pity she didn't play for a bit longer. It was the first time I've seen Ani as I only recently got into her. I've only got two albums, 'Puddle Dive' and 'Ani Difranco' so most of the material was new to me. I was very impressed by her energy and enthusiasm and there were plenty of songs I would like to hear again. Any recomendations for a next album? The show has definatly kicked my fan-level up a notch or two. n.p. Nothing, Sienfeld is on. G. - -- The important thing is not to stop questioning. Plans are rather open and unstable, but I hope to be able to catch up with Bay Area ectophiles whom I either missed or zoomed past last time. FWIW, I'll be driving out Route 80 cross-country, so might enjoy the opportunity to meet people en route. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 21:14:56 EDT From: Jessweiser24@aol.com Subject: Re: Ani in London ebgb@textmode.net writes: > again.
