Keller" Subject: Re: marianne nowottny There's no dodging the initial difficulties of Marianne Nowottny's music. (Though I'd expect a Pete Hammill fan to do better than many.) Speaking of my own case, I had been following her for about two years, become thoroughly familiar with her first album =Afraid of Me=, seen her live many times, and gotten to know a few of the newer songs by the time =Manmade Girl= came out last year...and it =still= took a couple of months of persistent listening to get a handle on it. Clearly a lot of people are not going to find it intriguing enough to be worth that kind of effort. Still, on the offchance it might prove useful, might I humbly make a few suggestions? Put away the second disc until later: except for the last two tracks it's all instrumental, and written in an ambient/minimalist style that's even less accessible than the songs on the first disc. (But you might try listening to it as background music and see if anything sinks in.) On the first disc, I recommend the following tracks, in roughly this order: "Barely Nearly" stays in one groove throughout, is relatively tuneful and harmonically untroubled. It's also my favorite song of hers, for whatever =that's= worth. "Sapphire" is a fairly straighforward ballad in the vein of, oh, say Tori Amos' "Mother." Its challenging aspect is that the verse and chorus are very long and move very slowly. "1000 Layer Pancake" has three or four odd but clearly- differentiated sections in a sequence repeated twice, thus being structurally less evasive than her usual. "Panopticon" is a glaring example of her penchant for playing a keyboard line and not =quite= singing along with it. Which reminds me to reiterate the message of my last post on the subject: if you try and follow the vocal by itself, you're likely to get confused and frustrated. Listen for the keyboard line as a guide to what she's singing against--or away from. "Bourbon Prince" has only lately (after a year!) come clear to me as one of the best tracks on the album, and I've had the inestimable advantage that she plays it at nearly every show. It's been well worth getting to know--as has the whole 2-hour album, as far as I'm concerned. In conclusion, with all due respect to Neile Graham, her opinion that Marianne Nowottny sounds like Marlene Dietrich in 1930 is very like my current opinion that Miles Davis' =Kind of Blue= sounds like Easy Listening--an understandable first impression that doesn't do the music justice. But clearly there isn't any music that's for everyone. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2002 15:12:14 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: bowie/ky I wasn't aware that Kristeen Young played piano on the new David Bowie album; what Tony Visconti (who has also produced some tracks for Kristeen's next whenever album) told me was that Kristeen sang backup on at least one track, so high that she was mistaken for a theremin. Any info as to what tracks she's on would be appreciated. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2002 17:48:12 -0500 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Susan McKeown on WUMB Wednesday 19th I've been trying to send this to the list since Monday afternoon, but sending from work kept using the wrong accounts I guess: Just visited the WUMB website to figure out who I was hearing, and noticed this.... (not related to who I was hearing online at the time, but ...) cool! WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19 Noon, LIVE AT NOON: Susan McKeown, originally from Dublin, Ireland, moved to New York in 1990 and since then she's been involved in a variety of music projects, most notably her work with her band, The Chanting House. Her hearftfelt vocals are wonderful, and we'll hear some as Susan performs live in the studio, and talks with Marilyn Rea Beyer. It's called the Elm City Song Circle, and will feature round-robin performances including the following wonderful musician people: Anne Heaton (no stranger to the ectoverse) Donna Martin (CT singer/songwriter) Robert Messore (even before he became a friend, I thought he was one of the most incredible guitar players I've ever seen) Eric Schwartz (equally capable of creating powerful and fall-down-funny music) Colleen Sexton (incredible voice, incredibly sweet person) Marc Teamaker (the only unknown -- to me -- on this list) The event takes place from 4-6 pm, and is free (though we will be passing a hat). Complete info, as well as directions and parking map can be found at http://www.ctfolk.com. If any ectofolk are planning to attend, please let me know! I'll be running around during the event. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 00:02:27 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: norah jones live (or some approximation thereof...) I saw Norah Jones play tonight at a sold out show at the Somerville Theatre. Erin McKeown opened the show with a 35 minute set that was the highlight of the evening. Dave Chalfant was along for the ride and played bass and guitar. She also had a drummer with him, but I didn't catch his name. With little exception, I could have had a more comfortable time by sitting at home listening to Norah's CD (the balcony seats at the Somerville are a cruel and unusual device if you're more than 4'6" tall). Norah gave a very textbook performance, with little passion and precious few opportunities for her band (Adam Levy on guitar, Lee Alexander on bass and Dan Reiser on drums) to cut lose and improvise. Adam Levy had a couple of solos that got applause out of the audience....I would have liked to hear more! Throughout the night, I kept hoping for some energy to kick in, but nothing ever moved faster than the pace of the CD.... The other thought that ran thru my head all night was that Holly Cole would have given a much more emotive performance, with a more energetic band. Comparing Norah to Diana Krall is also tough, as Diana's band trade off solos during live like prizefighters trading punches. I went with 4 other people, and 3 of them had never heard Erin McKeown at all. 2 of them had heard Norah on the radio, but at the end of the night they all preferred Erin to Norah :-) - -j ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #170 **************************
