Truth is, I'm no longer in the loop like I once was... I rarely go to see the live music these days and in fact I haven't even picked up my copy of Drum Media (THE essential source of info for anyone interested in the local scene) in the last couple of weeks... now that's scary! np: the Breeders, "Pod" - their best effort ever, IMHO - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm out of bed and I'm dressed, what more do you want?" - spotted on a T-shirt - -- 4:20pm up 13 days, 16:03, 2 users, load average: 0.01, 0.02, 0.00-- ------------------------------ Date: 06 Jun 2002 22:58:58 +1000 From: andrew fries Subject: local artist makes good (Carla Werner) A few years back when I still run my music website I had a page about Carla Werner, a local girl with a guitar and a remarkable, jazz-tinged voice. She used to be fairly visible on the local scene for a while, released an EP, and then, as it often happens, she disappeared. Now (thanks to Sherlyn for the link to an article in Sydney Morning Herald!) I can report Carla moved to the States, got signed to Columbia and is working on her album, to be released some time next year. Good for her! Having said that, I'm likely to dislike that record when it finally comes out. Just as it was recently said about Sarah Slean, I suspect it will be the case of "if I hadn't heard her earlier material, I'd probably enjoy this one". This should not be the problem for most of you, but I'm used to hearing her songs in very intimate, stripped down setting - usually just her voice and guitar. This upcoming record is likely to be very different. Especially considering it will be released by a major, and that it is produced by Carmen Rizzo who tends to specialise in big, lush, electronic arrangements. Carmen Rizzo worked with a number of mainstream artists, but there is an Ecto connection as well: his name appears in credits on Ekova's "Space Lullabies.." Most of all, he worked with my Goddess Crista Calero on a project under the name of Povi. Now, that *was* an interesting recording, his studio skills providing a counterpoint for Crista's raw energy and punk sensibilities. But Crista has a powerful presence; I'm not sure what unleashing him on Carla's delicate songs will bring. Still, I'm curious. And in the meantime, if you spot Carla Werner appearing live anywhere near you, check her out! It should be good... oh, here's the link to that article: - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm out of bed and I'm dressed, what more do you want?" - spotted on a T-shirt - -- 8:20pm up 13 days, 20:03, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 15:01:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: Wilco Movie Debuts Any Wilco other fans in the house? - -Neb - --- clam_nebula wrote: > Date: Thu, 06 Jun 2002 04:31:08 -0000 > From: "clam_nebula" > To: clam_nebula@yahoo.com,nrodg27403@hotmail.com > Subject: Fwd: Wilco Movie Debuts > > --- In guitartown@y..., Jonathan Lee wrote: > > > > > Wilco Film Debuts This Month > > Wider opening set for July and August > > Director Sam Jones' I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, a documentary about > the making of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, has been accepted at the Los > Angeles Film Festival and will make its world premiere there later this > month. Think I'll take the night off and be fresh for the rest of the festival which HAS shaped up to be quite an event. Have been busy surfing for info & songs from those I've never heard of before, so it's already a successfull festival to me for new artist intros. Discovered a wealth of performers that might appeal to Ectophiles so will add my list in case anyone is going to this hasn't firmed up their plans as yet. Of those I wasn't familiar with, am most impressed by Kathleen Edwards who is very evocative of Sarah Harmer (same manager too) and Serena Ryder with a powerfull, bluesy voice so hope to catch their showcases. Anyone going to see Rebecca Timmons should show up an hour earlier to catch Lindi's set. Think she has an amazing voice and will be considered a "godess" when she cracks the Ectophiles' Guide. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
